Model PYE2200AYW
Serial 10776853WY

I picked this up today from a quadplex thats being torn down not far from my house...

I had a choice between this, a Frigidaire from 1997 or a BOL Hotpoint from the early 90's...

My one question: Why is this thing yellow?? There are like heat spots or?? yellow staining on it.. From heat or something??? Runs great..

Wanna know who made it and if i should sell it (electric dryers arent popular here)or keep it until i find something better..

So is it electric?
Looks like it has been burning dust.

If it's gas, I'd guess the yellowing is schmutz from the combustion process.

Perhaps there was a plugged filter or an excessively long duct run. I'd wash the filter in soapy water in case the prior users used dryer-sheets, which are a huge fire-hazard, detriment to performance and not generally envirnmentally "green".

The push-to-start button is the timer dial itself, which is SUCH A MAYTAG TURN-ON from yester-year!

Does that mean gas is more popular or are dryers, in general, not all that popular?

Gas is far more popular..After house hunting with my sister (shes moving here) and looking at alot of places... 85-90% have gas dryers.... And most are either GE or Whirlpool.. The thrid and fourth place are Kenmore and Maytag...

Was this thing located in an open laundry area for the residents to use? There's a lot of dust in the Vegas area, looks like that is your culprit.

Im also thinking the yellowing at the back is burnt dryer sheet residue. It happens with fabric softer to but only slightly. Dryer sheets are very waxy like. Bad for skin, dryers and the environment lol.

The

yellow discoloration of the drum and brown rusty looking heat inlet both point to a restricted dryer exhaust vent system.

The surfaces become overheated from poor air flow through the machine. The inlet grille "rust" is really melted and/or burned on synthetic fibers.

Popularity of gas depends on what neck of Nevada you're

redcarpetdrew's profile picture
Up here in Reno, electric seems far more popular than gas. The house builders will run gas to the kitchen, furnace and water heater BUT not the few feet to the laundry room unless requested. Very FEW will have both 220v and gas available automatically. Plus, Reno also tends to have a large 'transitory' population and electric hookups are easier to find. Once you get out into the 'boonies', then you see more gas units in the form of propane units.

That's a nice Herrin, IL. built dryer. Very popular unit and relatively easy to work on. I see quite a few with yellowish discoloration (if not outright cracked) on the left hand side of the console right near the top as that is right where the element is and too much heat messes with the plastic usually due to poor venting. Just use a putty knife to pop the top clips along the front and disconnect the front panel. It's amaizing just how much crap builds up under the filter right at the blower. The door gaskets are cheap and a piece of cake to install. As the Herrin dryers can be touchy about their airflow, the gasket should be done...

Isn't that the truth. We see so may like that. I would say 80-85% that come in are cracked like that. These dryers were so much better than the washers.
