We had such a great time over the weekend, as you may have heard, thank you again to everyone for making it a fun and very memorable weekend!! The fun continued today with a stop in Newton, Iowa for those heading east on Interstate 80 and points beyond. We met at the Maytag Headquarters Factory Store for some fun shopping first and then went onto the Maytag historical display at the Jasper County Museum which is always a hit. Here is our group...

I sure wish the Texas contingent could have been there, but we were becoming "weary travelers" and I somehow caught a "bug" from the airport. Looked like everyone had fun, and the machines looked mint!! Didn't realize Maytag combo production started in '59 either--I learn something new every day!

YAY for wash-ins and conventions...

Familiar pair indeed!! We found this beautiful Maytag model 160 washer and 741C dryer at an estate sale, still in use, on Friday morning and brought it home for everyone to enjoy in the afternoon. We fired it up late last night and other than a water valve rebuild, the washer works perfectly! The dryer runs almost silently but will be converted to electronic control and electric heat before being used.

gansky--- I love the Maytag! Neighbors had one when I was growing up and I thought it was so cool; and very quiet compared to our loud '60 Kenmores. Are you recovering from all the company? Sounds like everyone had a great time. I'm trying very hard not to be bitter about having to miss all the fun, LOL!

YAY for Newton, Iowa!

So glad to hear some people made it to the great mecca of american washerdom. My Mom took me there when I was a jr. high Washerhead and I've been there several times since. Ma & I even bus' in to the factory, took a good look around. We took our own little tour around Plant 2. The security guard told us we couldn't go in there after we were already in the car getting ready to leave.

Factory Tours NLA

gansky1's profile picture
We would have loved a factory tour - especially since it is encouraged in many of my Maytag publications! I should have waved that in their faces..."well, I'm still using the washer and right here it welcomes us to Newton and..." ;-) Several of us bought some vintage literature from the Maytag store, one I found was a pictoral history of signs and billboards from around the plants and offices showing examples of how the quality is assured in Maytag products - fascinating!! Makes you just want to run out and order a new 160 washer today!

Terry and I took the front panel off the 160 washer today and it's nearly mint inside. Someone had disconnected the bleach dispenser chamber as it was clogged so we're cleaning it out and restoring it to orginal functionality. I've had lots of Maytags over the years and can't get over how quiet this one is! We had a little demonstration of the rapid advance timer and solenoid controlled water level selector while we were playing with it late Sunday night and I think we got Jon Charles (jetcone) hooked on MAYTAG if you can believe it!!! Just watch, by the end of summer he'll have 7 in the basement!

Just have to know, and Maytag Corporate museums...

programcomputer's profile picture
Uhm,

This is kinda out of Character...but who is the guy in the black wifebeater infront of the Maytag Museum...He's hotter than HotPOINT...LOL

When I worked for the Hoover Company, which as we all know was a division of Maytag, they encouraged all of the employees to not only visit the Hoover Historical Center, but to visit the Maytag museum in Newton.

Becasue my interest primarily laid in vacuum's at the time I did make the pilgrimage to North Canton Ohio, about a 3:45 minute trip from me. I enjoyed the vacuum cleaners thouroughly. In fact they had a small room where they went into glorious expleives about the wonders of Maytag and thier "Other" divisions as well. Had quite a few adverts there, and a lone middle line late 70's Maytag washer exemplifying the corporate need for "Simplicity".

It's cool tho....the non-electric vacuum cleaners there are a hoot... Especially the Kotten, which you stand on, and when you sea-saw back and forth it creates the sutcion. My freind Miracle who went with me wasn't really intersted until she got me doing this sea-saw thing as she pushed the little chrome nozzle/wand across the floor....

She claimed I looked like an outta shape, male version of Jane Fonda; who created a new excercise device for the american public...

Anyway...

Chad

Really was an interesting experience to see the Maytag stores and County Museum, it sure was worth it for them at the till!!!

I hope its a good outcome for the company and by fortune they are able to keep operating ...with a US parent..heres hoping.

We all said our goodbyes at the museum and whent on our merry way....those of us travelling back to Mnneapolis encountered a most vicious storm with golf balls of hail, black skys rain & sleet and needing four eyes to stay on the highway!!!

All I needed next was a twister!!!! (no not Toggleswitch...LOL) never needed a G&T sooooooo much in my life...and after we outrun the storm it swirled ahead and met us 3 miles from Minnie.....too much excitment for the lad from the UK...

Mike
Residing in Minneapolis for the last night
UK journey home tomorrow
Sad to leave, but one day nearer my next visit.....YAY!!!

Looks like you guys had a blast! One day I've got to get down to that museum and see these machines. From the pics it looks like an old-fashioned mill/warehouse setup, I'm thinkin' something like that could come in handy one day : )

Sorry,

I was uninformed, and again...said that totally out of charachter. Please forgive Robert...diddn't mean to make things uncomfortable.

I was just like...woah who's that? And now I know and am beyond embarrassed, and humbled into silence...

And for the record, I too am taken for four years now. But I will admit when I see a handsome one...Even Marty knows that.

Im gonna go and hide for a long long long long while.....

Chad....The biggest doof in the entire universe..

Hiding

Just because we're "taken" doesn't mean we're DEAD! And even if I was "taken" and somebody said that about me, I'd be flattered that I still "have it" and somebody noticed. :-)

Being taken....

Just because you are on a diet, doesn't mean you can't look at the menu..... just don't eat anything.

OK Mike,
TOGGLESWITCH= TWISTER?
LOL ROFL LMAO. [It's so nice to be loved!!!]
I promise you this, your wedding band or not, you are in serious trouble, Mister. At our next face-to-face meeting, I may not hold back with you next-time!!!!!

Perhaps we should have the next one in Las Vegas, Nevada.
What happens in L.V. stays in L.V.!!!!!

Seriously though..I had the time of my life. Thanks to all.

Sorry to hear the trip back to Minny was rough..

Poor Louis, I believe he said it was very bumpy on the way down to Nebraska as well.

I wish that all of you could have made the pilgrimage to Newton with us. Last year when I visited Greg we took a trip over there also on a Monday only to discover the factory store closed. Greg planned ahead this year and called them to see if they could arrange to be open for us. I am sure they were glad they did as we all bought a bunch of things. The museum was a real treat as well and it really helped me to put together a better understanding of the the history of Maytag. After seeing Greg's wonderful model 160 and the inside of the machine I have a new respect and fondness for Maytag. These machines seem to have been built like no others. They may not have been the most exciting machine but they sure were the best built. Looking through one of the books on the history of Maytag that Greg had I was amazed to learn what a wonderful company they were to work for in their "hay day". They had their own doctor at the factory and took care of all their employees medical needs. They had buses that went to all neighborhoods in Newton and picked you up for work as well as took you home. Working at Maytag was like being part of a big family. Too bad we can't buy the company and start something like that today. I am so grateful that I had the chance to get back there one last time for I fear that Maytag is not long for Newton. Terry
