Maybe I'm just on a run getting them. It won't last but I will enjoy it while I can. These came thru the haulaway pile the other day. QSD-DAN got these. I think that between Kevin and Dan, it's going to be a pill for other states to find extra available power...

Both manufactured March, 1974.

Washer first look. I got it without the lid. Drat! Otherwise pretty good shape. Wondered about the top where there might have been a model tag. The tag is actually on the back like it should be. Hmmm... Yet another customer who cannot figure out how to rinse out the cup...

Well, Dan drove over and took advantage of the shop and we went thru the washer. After washing out the inside, it looked preyyt clean. You could see the damper pads that came loose and were hanging out but luckily the damper survived!

First order of business was to install new pads. Dan wanted me to show him how it was done. Removed the whole mechanism in one piece and set aside.

Removed what was left of the old pads and cleaned all residue off the base. A mixture of wire brushing and acetone to prep the base. Glued the pads on and let the glue set.

The next evening, it was time to reassemble. First job was to make sure the new pads were coated with Polylube. Only Polylube should be used.

Gave it a test spin and even though it spun well, you could hear the 'quack quack quack' of the tub bearing due to age and wear. Since I had already showed Dan how to rebuild a HOH dryer, he decided to have me show him the ins and outs of changing a tub bearing and seal on this one instead. I actually took pictures of the whole process and will post in a separate thread for those who want to see how to do it complete with helpfull tips if you want me too.

So in went the new tub bearing and seal! This washer should be good to go for another 20+ years!

Reassembled and put her thru her paces. Since we had totally tore this washer down to the frame and reassembled, there was a little worry about it holding water. Winner! an used a new tubband clamp gasket ring for extra measure. Some thoughtful soul had already updated the injector assy before I got it.

Nice strong agitation. I love that gentle 'thrum thrum' that only a happy, healthy Maytag helical transmission can make. Dan watched closely to see if his new baby behaved herself. Of course, I shot a little video. And yes, Mickeyd, the title is '1974 Maytag HA806 agitate & spin' ;^)

Is that the same "scritch" the old Westy slantfront timers make? I had forgotten about that.

Beautiful machines. I wish I had a place for another pair. I'd not hesitate to deploy a center dial duo. Thrum thrum indeed. The sound of dependability.

Very NICE, chrome trim strips, chrome lint filter, white tub (great pic of the spin, thanks). Thanks for sharing the great pics of the restore. the b4 pic of the softner dispenser, really explains alot about how it can build up. Glad you had a lid. Did you notice the indentation to the right rear of the top panel where Maytag was gearing up to change the position of the model tag from the back panel to under the lid? I'm willing to bet that 806's produced from around April of 74 and on was when the big change occurred not only for the model tag placement, but for the removal of the chrome strip and time bleach injection. Maybe even the change from to the acrylic to the aluminum dial.

Anybody here have a pair of 806's that are very close to this month and year to help us narrow down the changes that occurred?

BTW, in order for me to make room for this set, I will need to find a new home for an HA806 washer from Sept of 1977. No tub light, chrome strip, stainless lint filter, or tub light, but but she's certainly a runner. Just needs a damper pad replacement. I can carry out that task if the new owner is reluctant.

This is a washer that I found and we then went thru it a while back. There is a thread on this forum where I posted pictures of the go thru. The damper pads are pretty much the same as the one I just gave to Dan. Pads are loose but the damper is intact. This is a very good washer that got a new injector, belts and cleaning. Do the pads and she should be good to go for a large number of years...

Which brings to mind a question. Has anyone successfully repainted the console of a center dial tag? If so, how did you accomplish it? How were the results compared to a factory finish?

I have an A-207 that could use a console refresh, but I am afraid of making it look worse than it does today.

BTW, if anyone knows where I can locate the mate to my washer, I'd appreciate it.

"Has anyone successfully repainted the console of a center dial tag? If so, how did you accomplish it? How were the results compared to a factory finish?"

I've done it on an A108 (gold console panel). It took masking tape, an X-acto knife, and gold spray paint that I got at the auto parts store. Auto touch-up paint came in different shades of gold, and I was able to find a good match. You also need the clearcoat, because today's auto paint is dull until you clearcoat it. If you have a machine with the aqua panel, I'm sure you can also find a match for that with auto touch-up. The brand is Dupli-Color; I got it at Pep Boys.

Basically, I masked off all chrome trim, buttons, dial, and the white upper section of the panel. The little chrome surrounds for the buttons are the toughest - you have to mask, then cut away excess tape with the X-acto knife. Then you spray a colour coat, let dry, shoot a second coat, then clearcoat.

Looked very decent when I was through, certainly much, much better than before. The previous owner of the machines had been a Spray 'n Wash addict, and there was almost no paint left on the dryer's panel. The washer was a little better, but still in need of help.

I did this with the panel in place, and when I do it on my new 'Tags (big surprise coming soon!), I will be doing it with the panel removed; I think I'll get a better, more "factory" job that way.

Dane,

If you could document the procedure with pictures, that would be great. My panel is the aqua blue. Sounds like it might be a good project for the weekend.

My white section could use a little help too, but I don't know where I would find another vintage Maytag decal.

Yeah, that would be a good idea - my contribution to the board.

For a Maytag decal, scan a Maytag logo, adjust the size, clean up in something like PhotoShop or GIMP, then print out. Cut to size, use spray adhesive on the back, press in place. Last step would be cutting a little piece of transparent Contact paper - just a little larger than the "decal" - and pressing that into place over the paper, to protect it. Not perfect, but much better than nothing.

How do you know if the pads need to be replaced? When my 806 is agitating it makes a grumbling type noise, and I have been wondering what is causing it.

Well, here's half of the pair. The 808 dryer is temporarily taking the place of the Kenmore until I get some new seals for it. I'm diggin the 808 so much I may be VERY lazy getting around to that repair :) The HDE806 dryer still needs a complete tear down which will happen....soon...hopefully. Hey, it's almost the crazy holiday season!

I spent a couple hours making some tedious adjustment to the washer. Got the inner tub perfectly centered and it now balances beautifully with an empty tub during the spin cycle. Broke out the digital calipers and adjusted the drive lug as it was set a little too tight. Adjusted the pump belt as well.

On the first load, I had a seeping hose leak at the beach nipple to tub hose and one at the pump drain hose. No biggie. The centering springs need to be tightened down a little tighter, with a 1/2 extra turn or so on the right spring to perfectly center the tub after a spin. Right now, I got her soaking some of those down right dirty clothes I was wearing while bringing her back to 100% operation.

Sorry for the fuzzy pic, but the camera gets very fussy when I turn the flash off.
