The racks on this thing are truly amazing. I only caught a glimpse of this machine back in 1970 at Gimbel's in NY before I was chased away by a salesman. I remember thinking that these were the most interesting and complex system of racking that I'd ever seen in a dishwasher. Almost 40 years later and getting a close-up look and I still think so. This thing must be able to hold a sh*tload of stuff.

The bottom rack has tines for 35 plates plus small racks for glasses including one tiny rack that comes out, presumably for access to the filter on the tub bottom. There are two, full length removable auxilliary cup racks on each side of the tub, and then a slideable rack for large plates and the silverware basket(which, by the way, is the only one I've ever had that will hold chopsticks without letting them slide out). Next to the upper plate rack is a fold-up half-rack with removable tines(they fold down out of the way) for glasses and pots and pans. This thing is a tank. And...

OK, maiden wash underway and...
...we have two problems already. She trips the GSI on the kitchen outlet(which is rated 20 amps) every time she progresses the cycle, with those familiar Maytag timer "clicks". Second problem: final drain after final rinse did not happen. I saw some sparking under the front panel during one of the breaker trips, but I can't find anything obvious. Looks very clean in here:

Problem spotted, can anyone advise?
The timer cam is definitely arcing. Whenever the machine comes to a "DRAIN" period, it either arcs and blows the breaker, or it simply pauses for the 75 second drain interval and then goes right into the next fill. What I've realized is this beautiful machine doesn't have a metered fill or an overflow protection device of any sort. If I let it, the machine would continuously fill 5 times during a regular cycle until water overflowed from the fill funnel. I know some of you guys are very well versed in these timer/cams. Before I go and do something stupid(like try to take the thing apart) any advice? It's probably one of the drain leads on the cam that's sticking or something. I remember one of you telling me that when the timer goes directly into reversing the motor without pausing it can cause arcing. I'm asssuming that's what's going on here. I can manually set the machine to drain by advancing the timer knob manually and then "easing" it backwards slightly until the drain kicks in. Problem is that it won't to it by itself.

User & care guide
I'm wondering if anyone has a use and care guide for this series of Maytags. I'd love to see the various loading options, especially with sucfh a fascinating rack system. I agree with Ken, looks like it would hold a ton!! I remember CR made a comment about water dripping down on dried dishes when you opened the lid and waterr came out of the top wash arm.

That's something I never quite understood. You'd think most places want the old parts gone in order to make room for the new ones. Last year, new HOH Maytag motors were about $75. Now that Whirlpool has recently obsoleted them, I've seem them as high as $230 on various sites. As far as I'm concerned, they're shooting themselves in the foot. It's an old part that's so far overpriced, no one is going to purchase it. And to top it off, it's taking up valuable space. Whatever..... | ||
