For those who were around, you may remember back on New Years Eve 2005 I stumbled upon a Kelvinator that I ended up restoring in January of 2007. While most of the mechanical restoration went fine, there was one very small problem:

A cracked clutch drum.

One of the big issues was getting the clutch off the original 2 speed motor. I was having a hell of a time getting the set screw out. Tried everything.

I even bought what I thought was a 2 speed motor that would fit from work that ended up not wiring up correctly - that I was going to couple with a spare clutch I got from Chris. Didn't pan out.

So, this fall I brought the original motor to a buddy at work who is a master welder. He was able to get the clutch off without any issues, and TIG welded the original clutch back up! While it isn't perfect, it certainly functions much better than it did before!

While I had the clutch apart for reassembly, I snapped some photos so folks could see how it works. Pretty simple and ingenious for what it is, but I can see why it was failure prone.

It works like this:

The center shaft is bushed by two bronze sleeve bearings pressed into the outer drum. There are two clutch shoes that fit over the two 'arms' that stick out from the center shaft. As the motor spins up those shoes will glide outwards and grab against the outer clutch drum - thus a clutching motion. When I first got the machine you couldn't even spin the center shaft inside the outer drum. Now it spins like a dream and I no longer have issues with the motor start switch!

The two clutch shoes shown in the photo below are pretty thin on pad material. The spare I have is in much better shape, but I figured I'd get as much mileage out of this as I can.

Weld from the inside. Almost can't even see where the weld was. While there is a slight dip in the overall circumference of the drum, it works well enough for now. I'm lucky I even have this to use - I figured I'd have to bust the clutch up to get it off the motor.

A side project - I was always having issues getting the hose to not kink. So I fastened some 3/4" PVC pipe up and created a more rigid solution to the issue. Works like a charm!

Wow Ben, VERY COOL!

I'm glad you were able to get the problem fixed and bring it back to life! Have you tested it yet? (silly question?)

So Ben, how's it run?

swestoyz's profile picture
GREAT! There is still some clutch rattle that is present due to the thin pads on the shoes. It has gotten a little better after running a few dozen loads through it as they have re-formed to the new shape of the drum.

I made a video of a full wash, and posted it on YouTube (see link below). I was masking the clutch issue in my 2007 video (purely on accident) with the Cheep Trick song, so the new video does the machine justice. I'll post some more photos of the machine below. Enjoy!

Full cabinet assembled. This was the first time she was able to wear her skins since January of 2006!

I've included a link back to one of the first post that includes more photos and a link to the 2007 video.

Glad to have another one checked off the list.

I can't get over these photos. Jesus H!

The water shot and the light arcing in "Coasting from Spin"--you gotta be kidding me, absolutely celestial!

"The Shampooing action," I think, Ben, that shot may be THEE single coolest photo I've ever seen.

Even the colors in the tub, the black agi, the orange/red cap and the unusual tub coloration and speckling--they're amazing

And i love the humor and the art of setting up all your little gizmos on the double rinsing WO-65.

When you get a chance, I need the title of the video in order to view it. Thanks.

Now I'm going to take my laptop to bed, and study beauty as I fall asleep. Amazing. The Senator from Iowa hits another grand slam.

Ben - Amazing, A beautiful job

for a beautiful machine. I love the stylish logo on the right
front of the cabinet. What is the button on the top to right
rear of the lid? Overload reset?

Ben, that is an awesome machine! Congratulations on the 'creative re-engineering' for the clutch drive - if that wash video is any indication, this washer is going to serve you well for many many more years!!
I love the control panel - it really captures that "atomic" look nicely!
Congratulations - you have done a splendid job and thank you for sharing the videos! I just learned a lot more about Kelvy washers from watching (and they say TV isn't instructional... HA!)
Enjoy this beauty!!!

You know, my Dad's Friends wife had the exact machine in her kitchen and I always wanted to see it wash and would practically beg her to see the machine run, but I never did. What a great concept in agitation. Very Splashy and Dramatic.

Thanks guys - glad to see that someone (Eddie) has seen this machine before from their childhood. Very cool.

Mike - the title to the video is: AMC Kelvinator - Washing again!

I'm not sure what YouTube is up to these days. I created the video in wide screen format, HQ. But from the upload results they put it up as standard 4:3, and it is on HQ full time? I dunno anymore.

This is where I get to learn the most stuff from you maniacs. These Kelvy's are so freakin' cool--but, honest to G, I've barely seen one of them in my entire life in the NY tri-state area. Were they only sold in some states? I'd love to see one in action, or own one someday.

Thanks guys for the messages. While they are very simple, mechanically, they are anything but simple while washing!

Yes - the motor is a Delco motor. The spare single speed motor and clutch that I received from Chris was of the Westinghouse variety. I suppose AMC was sourcing from whomever came back with the lowest bid.

Trip to Cape Cod? I've never been to that part of Mass before... ;-)

Ben the washer look's FANTASTIC!
I was wondering how do you advance the control panel, or start at a point where you want to wash ?
Nice restoration job ! That video what fun that is what an the hell record did you find the song from lol,Love it... I tell you there is NO need for a second rinse with that baby!
Concentric Action , Slimline wash bar control panel , Lighted control panel, AND see thru Window.......The machine rocks. AWSOME thanks. ( off topic )
I got a Neptune for my neighbor and I will show you later hey that rhyme.
If I can't get all the machines I want or don't have enough space I try to get other people to get them that way I can use them who are close to me lol.
I think the NEPTUNES are fun machines even if you can't see them wash until you bypass the switch, but sometimes when you imagine the clothes washing in the basket it is pretty mysterious... that model with the sound's are pretty soothing for me...Well have a good time with your Daily driver I'm sure in the future , there will be another one in it's place right ?
Take care.

Leon - glad to have helped. Just as long as the drum isn't cracked and you get can the set screw out, you should be good to go. I'm brainstorming on ways to add more pad material to the shoes. Back in the day you could re-line break drums....
