What IS this?

Who MADE this?

Do we have any of our people in Columbus?

I'm going crazy here with excitement

Look at how thick the molding is, joining glass to metal.

You never see an Easy this old without many dents to the lids, while these are nearly pristine.

Will anyone who has a theory here, come forward.

I would love to have this. Would any of you?

See the hanging tag. You're probably right. After Robert posted, I later remembered his glass or plastic tubbed Tag which was a demo. I was hoping for a much more exotic explanation, but sometimes as Siggy Freud once said a cigar is just a cigar.

It looks unused. (Of course, the tag could be from the new seller.)

Is there any other possibility. A Robert Easymatic of the 40's who decided to make this one day the way R made the S Uni 2.

I have that same Easy Spindrier, but mine is without the 2 windows on the front. Everything else is identical. I want this one so bad cause mine does not agitate for some reason. It barely agitates if at all. Only when you press down on the agitator do you even get some action on it. I did find an open hole where a bolt should have gone and it looks like all the tranny fluid is gone. The spinner works great though as well as the pump. Pics soon to come!

Could that be a dealers "demo" machine?I have a book Titled "household Equipment" that shows an Easy washer with glass or Lucite wash and spin tubs.Quite impressive. The book also discusses vacuum cleaners, small kitchen appliances, water heaters, lighting, and furnaces from the time the book was written-1941.bought it from an antique mall out here years ago-the mall got destroyed by hurricane Floyd.

Also mine does not have the faucets for some reason. I have a rubber hose attached to a chrome goose neck faucet that is actually directly connected to the pump underneath. I am not sure if that was originally done that way cause it looks like it was cut from back of the round piece you see in the back of this machine. (The one with the quick connect pointing down.)

If someone else wants it, PLEASE SPEAK UP! I don't want to take something someone else wants and I don't want to artificially drive up the price in the process.

I only hope that someone in this club not only wins it for a reasonable price but that they also record the unit in full operation and share it with us. I seriously doubt that it has done anything more than a bunch of "EASY" promotional ping pong balls in a tub of clean tap water. It looks like a display model that would do that. Now that we are witnessing this gem,it makes me wonder if there may be more of these somewhere else.you never know, right Robert????!!!! Hey Brian, about yours not having faucets:

mickeyd's profile picture
Here was the Easy line-up for most years:

The basic model had no faucets, but a drain hose. Also you had to fill and rinse with your own hose.

Next up, one faucet for the fill and rinse, and still a drain hose.

After than, two faucets: one for draining and return suds to the washtub; the other for filling and rinsing. No control for the spinner drain on this one. The spinner drain was always open. People complained about the constant gurgling. And when fabric softener arrived, you had to shut off the whole machine to hold water in the spinner. No drain hose.

Finally, the Big Momma, with a control for the spinner drain. Two faucets, no hose. In earlier models, the spinner drain was controlled by the big handle on the right in the picture. It has 3 positions CLOSED OPEN SPIN. The upside-down handle in the middle controls the washtub drain. Some years' models featured two handles.

There were changes from year to year. Some basic models did not have the needle spray cone rinse. In those, you'll find a ceramic disc/ post that looks a lot like the Calypso wash-plate. In these models, you did a power flush rinse.

It's hard to tell if this machine has the CLOSED OPEN SPIN option or the constant drain. My Aunt Marge's was made a little later, and was identical except that the drain control had evolved into a nice white up/down lever just below the timer. And hers was marked CLOSED , etc. When OPEN, the gurgling is comforting, but Consumer Reports whined about it. The joke was on them because they bought the wrong model for testing, and couldn't shut the gurgling off--haha ;'D

There's more but I don't want to put anyone to sleep. Maybe in the next movie. A good friend in the club suggested a movie on washing a load in the Easy, start to finish, with a spin rinse and a power flush rinse. I would love to do that for Christmas.

The guy that had the washingmachine museum had a 1915 or 12 Easy with a glass side and the plunger action.Maybe they made these only once in awhile.I remember as a kid Sears had a wringer with a glass tub and they put those multi-colored plastic toys in it,they looked like big popbeads.I would luv to have that machine.I would rather watch that than whats on TV. Thinking out loud on my bike ride

mickeyd's profile picture
We all have our washer fantasies. I mean how mean hours have we spent dreaming of machines. But I gotta tell ya, never once did I imagine this, and I've been an Easy lover since early childhood and all my life, and lucky enough to have owned a few.

I'm not up to going after this. And as you age, friends, you get just as big a kick out of seeing someone else get something marvelous as you would getting it yourself.

So then I thought, I hope the winner makes a big big flick, or maybe if someone close by, Rochester, Syracuse, Erie, gets it, Denny & I could film it for you.

THEN, the ideas came rushing. You have a mint Easy. This dream machine is glass and metal. What else is like this? A CAR A WINDSHIELD. The windshield molding is just like what were seeing in the pix, only today it's more subtle and refined. I have cousins who are ace car mechanics. They know collision people and glass people ;'>

And then, Hey! Wait! There must be some brother AWorgers who are equally knowledgeable in this area.

So what would it take and now much would it cost to customize an existing Easy to look like the dream machine. Any ideas. THANK YOU..... Mike

A little tip to the Ebay bidders here: Don't get into a bidding war until seconds away from the end of the auction. Otherwise, you're unnecessarily driving up the price.

Mine has a constant drain on the spinner tub, but the control dictates whether the wash tub drains into the pump and out. The weird thing is that it looks like they cut the hose off the back of that round metal piece in the back with the quick connect and placed it directly on the pump. Taking the plate off the back reveals a cut hose that oddly matches the cut end of the hose on the pump. It looks like my drain hose was really supposed to be a fill hose. I will take pics this week and post for everyone to see what I am talking about.

I wonder if it is glass or plexiglas,it does look as if it was used probably of course for a demo. The paint on those machines is so thin.I repainted my Easy wringer, and my twin tub really needs it. Good Luck Bobby

HI Bobby!

Was plexiglas around back then --late 40's. I have no idea, but it looks like real glass.

I think Greg recommends oil base deck paint for washer. We'll have to ask him. I have a patch on my Easy that needs covering. We want to make iit perfect.

If Jon Combo Le Fevre wins the bid, we're all in luck. GO JON GO

Paint

Oh Yes,Plexiglas was the rage after WW2.From what I read glass was still very hard to bend and keep its strength.Thats one of the reasons windshields were still flat on most cars till the early fifties.I used automobile primer, white, and then white Rustoleum paint works wonders on washers.I even painted my anchor fence with green in the gallon tin.Holds up really good around moisture.I took a nappy roller and rolled it on the chainlink and sprayed the supports. The fence almost disappears in the spring and summer.I wish I had a scanner or I would post pics of the washer.Im still interested in a cone spinner tub,of course will pay you and shipping for it. I have an old twintub for parts the spinner shift lever is jammed, was that way when I bought it.Thanks Bobby

At first, I thought the admen cut the faucets off because they were in the way. But the copy says that the fresh water surges "UP THROUGH" the cone. This completely baffles me. But how do you fill the wash tub? Where is the control to direct the water either way? The things you learn at AWorg, and the more challenges raised! Maybe Brain's machine with all the hose confusion was originally one of these. Interesting that they don't show a drain hose.

Can anyone explain? Thank You. Tom, is there anything in those Library of Congress journals on appliance development?

Having trouble reading most of the copy and it won't blow up. Maybe our genius Webmaster Sam will tweak his nose and work his magic, if he gets a free moment.

Curved Glass:

danemodsandy's profile picture
I can't contribute anything beyond my own experience, but I do have personal knowledge of curved glass dating from before this Easy would have been made. When I was a kid, one of my mom's prized possessions was a Victorian-era desk with a glass-front bookcase. The bookcase was beside the drop-leaf desk (which had drawers beneath it), and it was maybe five feet tall, total (the entire piece was seven feet tall or so). The bookcase's door was curved, and the glass in it was, too. Sometime in '56 or '57, the piece fell over onto its face (probably from Mom overloading the drop-leaf for the desk), and so the original glass had to be replaced. Anyway, producing curved glass was evidently a possibility as early as the turn of the 20th century, when that piece was produced. And the replacement curved glass was available at the local level in the '50s, so it must not have been a huge deal, maybe a little hard to get, but still something a housewife could locate and order. However, it was not safety glass of any kind, and that probably made a huge difference.

Sad coda: We had a house fire in early '59, and this time the desk/bookcase was damaged beyond restoration, mostly by water from the fire-fighting efforts. Too bad; it was a very handsome piece, with dragon heads holding up the shelves above the desk.

I talked to you before seeing the ad. It looks like it does light up after all. We'll have to wait till we can read the print.

Thanks so much for the pic of the Hotpoint. I was always curious about the stark similarity between the Hotpoint and Easy agitator, and now look at the similarity between the HP Circle jet and the Circle jet on the Frigidaire 1-18's. I wonder if the Frigidaire Engineers borrowed a page from the Hotpoint UK playbook.

Gonna go enjoy the whole ad now with another spot o' tea. Thanks again. Faulty memory had me thinking you once made a movie of the HP Circle Jet Rinse.

I saw one also

I do remember those oak knick-nac cases. The glass was very thin.About 1948 GM started to put a curve in the windshield and Hudson. They were still 2piece though. All the Chrysler products didnt go to a one piece until 53 and then they were only slightly curved, but the back windows were quite large and curved.Even today to replace those old wrap around windshields is an art, most auto glass people wont touch them. Thanks Bobby

Now we can relax.

Jetcone, Combo& Turbo : Do you have any info on the Easy in Brad's ad which claims to shoot water up the jetcone? A lead would be greatly appreciated.

At first, I thought it was a mad ad man's fiction. Then I remembered the screen flush, and the automatic holding of rinse water on the 47 GE, so there were a lot of seemingly unbelievable miracles going on in the 40's washing machine's. And then later there was the spray rinsing Wringer on the Visimatic.

Wonderful John!!! I knew as soon as I saw this gem that somebody here would be glad to save it!! I thank everyone here who was inspired enough for their bids and would recomend that you do a video and sell it like Robert has with two seperate models so far. The lates being a Montgomery Ward (Norge) Signature.
