Hi All!
Now that my Christmas concert is over, I thought I would tackle the agitator on the Norge. The original one is broken at the top and is frozen to the shaft.

If you read the earlier thread, the replacement has lint crud stuck inside:

Post# 398499 , Reply# 2   12/9/2009 at 09:53 (5,244 days old) by bobbyderegis (Boston)

So now I need to remove the cracked agitator. Nothing made it budge, so since it was junk, I took the Dremel to it.

Post# 398500 , Reply# 3   12/9/2009 at 09:55 (5,244 days old) by bobbyderegis (Boston)

I worked at it for over an hour. I have never seen an agitator so frozen onto a shaft. I bet the crazy Youtube washer killer couldn't get this one off!

Post# 398501 , Reply# 4   12/9/2009 at 09:57 (5,244 days old) by bobbyderegis (Boston)

As I'm doing this, I hear someone knocking. I put down the Dremel and head for the front door. As I pass by the GE Filter-Flo, I realize the knock was an unbalanced beach towel that I had thrown in!

Post# 398502 , Reply# 5   12/9/2009 at 09:59 (5,244 days old) by bobbyderegis (Boston)

I finally get the agitator off. I could have cried. The shaft looks like something rescued from the wreck of the Titanic!

A close up:

Post# 398506 , Reply# 7   12/9/2009 at 10:05 (5,244 days old) by bobbyderegis (Boston)

So now I ask the experts:
Where can I get a new shaft cover, drive hub, and gaskets? I assume I can remove the tub, pull the drive hub off and then the shaft cover without changing or pulling the entire tranny. Anyone willing to offer suggestions? I don't want to see this poor old girl go to the scrapyard!

Bobby, I bet Larry at Modern has a drive block, those might even still be available. You probably can get away with not replacing the hub and shaft as its going to be a monster of a job to get everything apart.

Bobby, I see you've become an ace mechanic very quickly.

Don't you have a mini-basket to successfully spin a lone beach towel?

What vintage is that Norge? I see it says 20 pounds. It's much like the '67 Signature my mom had, but that one was an 18-pounder and had a slanted control panel.

The machine looks very clean otherwise. Good luck with it. You have earplugs handy, right?

71 or 72

I used one like this I got from lightedcontroldial in Virgina for over a year...until I got tired of my hubby complaining about how rough it was on his clothes.....I still think it is THE BEST washer ever made!

Making progress..........

Larry at Modern has some parts. Does anyone know if there are four or six bolts under the wash basket? He doesn't have a diagram of this model, an LWA 2040 A00.

If your mom had a 18pounder, that was a Westinghouse. Wards carried either the Norge 20-22lb, of the 18lb Westy. Of course the Norge ran circles around the Westy and its lousy indexing tub.

I'm sorta missing my norgetag

In reply to Post# 398578-12/9/2009-14:39 by Norgeway.

I had a PAV Maytag, which a lot of ppl around these parts don't like, and yes it only lasted 10 years, but I'm sort of missing it.

I miss the true 2-speed selectable agitate/spin combos
I miss the basket size

I now realize that it was far more gentle on clothes than my DD Admir-pool is, especially since most of the time on the Norge-tag I used a long cycle, slow agitate, fast spin.

A '67 Signature would have been a Norge built washer. They were 15, 16, 18 and finally 20 pounds by the very early 70's.

Sorry Bobby, I don't have parts diagrams for that model - only earlier stuff or much later books. Best of luck on the restoration - finding the parts is half the battle!

Love the older, slanted consoles. How Whirlpoolesque!
Since there are only three tub bolts, I assume the agitator shaft cover would have six bolts, evenly spaced around the three, no?

OMG that avocado set is going to give me nightmares. Excuse me while I finish shuddering. I was hoping never to see them again. I'm glad to see they're sitting somewhere and not actually in use by anyone.

I thought my mom's 18# pair were '67s but her dryer had the 3-position drop down door.

I think this might be a bit older, but close...

From the Montgomery Ward Dept. 85 service manual for Norge-built washers:

Center Post Assembly

"The center post assembly is made up of the center post, a nylon bearing installed over the lower portion of the center post and a bearing installed in the upper portion of the center post.

The center post assembly is secured to the upper spin tube hub by the 3 screws that secure the spin basket. A gasket is installed between the center post and the hub."

I sounds like the shaft cover (center post) should be able to be removed with the 3 bolts when you remove the spin basket.

I'm trying my best Norgeway. I'm one step closer to an agitator post. Nothing beats a Norge!

Parts on order, thanks to Larry at Modern Parts (thanks Robert!). The three hole agitator post could not be had, but a six hole could. Should the three extra holes be plugged, or will the gasket seal be enough? Any suggestions for the tub cover gasket? I bet it is also NLA. Will it tear when I pull the cover? If so, then what?
