in 1969 when i was 13 my aunt and uncle bought me a hotpoint dishwasher for 10 bucks from a plumbing store in cinti. it was in back of their store in a junk pile when i found it. i spent the next 2 years working on it and basically destroying almost everything i touched!

when i was done i had replaced the motor, pump, detergent cup element, and a host of other parts! but it finally ran. i then put sides on it and we made a top out of wood. i painted in coppertone (you could buy appliance coppertone paint in those days) and put it on casters.

but it leaked like crazy around the left side of the door even after a new gasket. so we left it in the basement and my aunt and i would cart the dishes down from the 2nd floor kitchen every day to wash them!

i felt it was a complete success and we continued to wash our dishes that way until i bought her a new g.e. dishwasher 2 years later. i cannot remember whatever became of that little hotpoint that started it all for me!

i had another one in the late 70's i picked up at the curb and i continued to see them occasionally throughout the decade. then they disappeared. i have not seen one since.

until now!

this was advertised here off of craigs list in san diego. i knew it was my old hotpoint from the style of the pump so i bought it and had jim bring it to me. it arrived the week before christmas! completely wrapped in celephane!

never had a seller

rollermatic's profile picture
wrap one that completely for me before! the lady i bought it from was really nice although i origionally had a pretty good fight with her son via e mail over the purchase! i had pretty much kissed the idea of buying it goodbye until the lady herself e mailed me.

the son had told me

rollermatic's profile picture
that i had to pick it up by christmas or i would lose my 150 bucks and he would throw it away! i told him that i had never had a seller be that demanding before, especially when i am offering twice the sale price of 75 bucks if they will work with me on getting it picked up. i've dealt with a lot of sellers this year and picked up a lot of dishwashers, this was a first!

i got rude with him, he told me to go to hell! then the mother e mailed me and was sweet as pie and i was equally nice to her as i really liked dealing with her. she gave me the whole story on the dishwasher. it was put in in 1972 and never really used by her mother.

i told her my childhood dishwasher story of my little hotpoint and she agreed to give me as much time as i needed. i had to find out when jim was gonna be in calif.

jim got it here week before christmas and looked very good from initial inspection

our appliances was fun thing to do! my aunt used to spend much energy keeping her 1965 custom imperial washer looking like new! she never would use the liquid detergent and fabric softner cup dispensor as she didn't want it to get dirty!

it was kept from popping off the top of the pump by riding up against the center spray tube during wash phases. it was not locked to the pump in any way and easily lifts off.

the pump bottom has six cuts in the side of it that the impeller slings water into

these match up with

rollermatic's profile picture
six cut outs in the metal part of the top pump half.

thus the water is lifted thru the pump

To this day, I am reminded of this dishwasher--had it in the very first apartment I lived in as a college studenty in the fall of 1974--kitchens were probably 5-8 years oldr. I have a set of glasses my best friend from high school's mother gave me as a congrats for me moving to my apartment. The tea glasses were pretty tall and they only fit precilesly one way in the top rack. One of my dinner guests decided they wanted to "help" me by helping with the dishes--I didn't observe the glasses being put in (smaller ones looked the same too). I broke two that weren't in their correctly as I pushed the top rack in. So, every time I see those only 6 of 8 tea glasses, I think of this dishwasher.

it is not the most

rollermatic's profile picture
powerful by any means. it is a 1/3 h.p. and 1725 r.p.m. that always surprised me. kitchenaid and even d&m models used a 3450 r.p.m. motor by the mid sixties.

it has it's drian pump built into the top of the motor and attaches to a lip on the dishwasher sump by a rubber sleeve and 2 large clamps.

the bottom drain pump impeller

rollermatic's profile picture
that sits on top of the water seal and the wash impeller stem sits on top of it.

this one pictured is not the one off my dishwasher. it is an extra that i picked up from larry in parma and use as a wall decoration.

later drain pump impellers had food chopper blades attached to their top side. my 1972 hotpoint will have those. this impeller pictured is from the earlier models and it lacked this chopper addition.

my first one had a half spray arm attached to the top of that spray tube instead of the blue ball. it even had a control valve that you turned to increase or decrease the spray.

detergent cup on this one

rollermatic's profile picture
is diffeent from the earlier hotpoint i had. my first one had black bakelite plastic cups sunk into the door with a stainless steel cover over the main wash cup. it was controlled by a bi-metal strip that fed off of the motor current during the main wash.

you can see the spot where that

pressure switch would go (on the earlier models) in this pic.

note the round indentation on the tub bottom here.

this one has a unique

way of filling. it squirts the water in at the top right front of the tub as a sort of a 'power shower".

my first one simply had the black bakelite fill cup on the left side that we all know so well.

let me see what you've asked me here and i will post pics if i can!

i never thought i'd get this dishwasher again, let along one that looks like new! i am not going to tear into it at all as it runs great! noisy as hell but doesn't leak a drop! nor will it really be used by me, it is simply a keepsake in my collection.

think i will call larry in parma just to see if he has a pump seal for it. that would be the only part i would ever need. i know these like the back of my hand, a very easy machine to work on (unless you're 12 years old like i was), i ruined all major parts on my first. even burnt up the motor by running it with machine upside down not knwing it had a starting relay on it that had to be right side up to function!

This is a great dishwasher only ours was portable and had a rinse hold and regular cycle buttons and had a rinse aid dispenser. I like the way it says wisper clean, it was far from a wisper but did wash very well.
Hope to chat soon.

Great post! I so know how you feel. Those first pictures of the inside of that machine took me back; I remember that speckled blue/gray Hotpoint interior. I also remember that detergent dispenser that you mentioned with the steel cover.

I don't know if I posted this already, but I have some scans for a Hotpoint dishwasher catalogue for models made in 1962, I think. Our downstairs neighbors, Marian and Dick, had the BOL version. Same tub, same black impeller, no center spray whatsoever and same racks only they were blue. It was a great dishwasher.

What a contrast between that and our GE pull-out. I think my parents wished with 20/20 hindsight that they had bought that Hotpoint dishwasher, they liked the front loading style, instead of the GE( it was never appreciated, they groused about having to reach down into the tank to unload it and no one ever bothered to figure out the other 3 cycles or the racking system. I didn't even know the thing had a Power Shower until the day my Father and I pulled it out of the kitchen).

Great dishwasher there but how does the filter keep its self clean I cant actually see any filter in the unit?

Is it possible to upload pics of how the dishwasher filters the water and also how the pump works... I saw the pictures but dont understand the 2 impellars?

Post# 403672 , Reply# 65   1/3/2010 at 20:38 (5,198 days old) by rollermatic (cincinnati)
actually hotpoint didn't really care

rollermatic's profile picture
about filters in those days! a lot of machines had no filters in the early and mid sixties. my g.e. mobile maid has none too. and my frigidaire dishmobiles. and all the D&M machines like modern maid and kenmore roto racks.

i might be wrong here so someone correct me if i am ofcourse but i think kitchenaid were the only machines to have a water filtration system on the early units.

this little hotpoint actually does have a plastic cover full of little holes that slips over the lower half of the pump.

this feature was added in the later models like this one here. my first hotpoint i mentioned above had absolutely no filter whatsoever!

here is a pic showing that plastic "filter" and that's a really good point you made! i forgot all about mentioning that plastic screen used on this one but not my earlier version! thanks!

A Wonderful Story

macboy91si's profile picture
I really enjoyed this post, it brought back many memories for me. When I was around 13 my grandfather gave me an old Hotpoint washer that I enjoyed for 2 years or so. I took that machine apart, put it back together and ran the crap out of it. It stayed outside, behind our house and I would fill it with a garden hose and looked forward to playing with it after school. I'm not sure of the age of the washer exactly, if I had to guess, I would say that it was a late 70's or early 80's MOL Rim-Flo 2-speed with the ramp.

I guess where I'm going with this is getting something back that carried so much enjoyment and memories is something that can't easily be explained whether it be appliances or not. These things are much more than material items, they're a reminder of better times, happier times. Your story carries that well, and is something I can deeply relate to. I enjoyed this post, and hopefully I can make one myself in the near future.

Cheers

-Tim

but there is no maiden wash. i ran it thru a couple cycles empty to see if it leaked, that's the extent of it. this one will not be used, just added to the collection.

and happy to say so. Not just this thread but the whole forum was inaccessible. So I gave up. Glad it's back.

A wealth of Hotpoint lore for novices like me, and probably the most generous scan in AWorg history. Thank you, Peter

Nice dishwasher Peter...
I love the simple look of the door and knob and the original Hotpoint sprayarm.
My aunt had a hotpoint with this sprayarm, and i begged here to turn it on because she was the kind of person to use it once a year... after bugging her for days she finally broke down and ran it. lol
Are you going to hook the machine up ?

no i only use a few of my dishwashers, the rest i just "keep". i usually rebuild them and make sure they aren't rusting out while being "kept" but after that i simply find them a spot and they become "furniture".

i did run the hotpoint one nite when i first got it. i wanted to see what it would do and check for leaks. since this one was basically new, never used i did not bother tearing into it except for a couple pics taken above. it is now in my bedroom next to 4 others.

the only one's i use are my kdss-17a stainless kitchenaid, my top loader roto rack lady kenmore (that i love), the g.e. mobile maid top loader, the kd-5 kitchenaid top loader, one of my kd-12 kitchenaids, the frigidaire front load dishmobile, the kd-16 kitchenaid, and occasionally the modern maid impeller machine (just for fun). i am partial to top loaders and out of all of them the kd-5 hobart does the best job. but i will say that kenmore rotorack top loader can clean like crazy too.

i have a kd-14 coming soon from philly and i have to go to bufalo and pick up a g.e. mobile maid i bought on e bay. i also have to go to virginia and pick up a hotpoint impeller machine i bought last fall. i might put the kd-14 into use as i love those kitchenaids! i ordered a pump seal from hobart several weeks ago. they still have a few out there!

after that i'm done! unless i want to sleep in my dishwashers. i'm out of room!
