Check it out, its the original patent (applied for in 1943) to the belt-drive Whirlpool!

Robert, if the original patent was applied for in '43, makes one wonder if this was something progressively under development over a period of years. Possibly a late '30's design. That would put it in the league of a number of early designs. What a successful design!

Roger, I"m glad you got up there before the last bit of ice and stuff. I was wondering whether you'd made it in time or not. I am not sure which is cuter, the washer or you.

Totally Steve, although from the application date this one is a bit later than GE, Blackstone or Frigidaire top loaders, but for sure was it being designed much earlier than '43.

WP belt DR washers

WP made thier BD machines aprox 40 years they stopped in April of 1987. Maytag made thier helical drive from 1956-2006 or over 50 years although WP probably made 3 or 4 times as many washers during that time.
