After the Catalyst...

I take it these models came after the Catalyst and before the release of the Maytag Bravos, Kenmore Elite Oasis, and Whirlpool Cabrio?--Laundry Shark

Calypsos appeared long before the Oasis/Cabrio/Bravos family. Many people confuse Calypso and Cabrio as being akin due to the similar-sounding names but the machines are very different.

They were manufactured and marketed earlier than 2002. I've seen a press release dated August 2000 regarding introduction of Kenmore's Calypso. Per the serial numbers, my Whirlpools were manufactured in 5th week and 41st week of 2001. There were design changes already in place on the production line between early and late 2001. The older machine has the original u-joint design and separate flood pressure switch. The newer has the revised u-joint (before I replaced it) and lacks the flood switch. Both have the original-style pump.

As some may recall, mayken4now (Steve Bollich) found a NIB Calypso pair back in September 2007. Serial number indicated manufacture in 13th week of 2005.

Forgot to discuss the Catalyst aspect. The Catalyst process predates Calypsos, I'm sure. Calypsos are touted as having Catalyst action. The initial fill is neutral (no nutation, spin, or recirculation) to flush the detergent dispenser and fill the pump sump to satisfy the water level pressure switch. Then recirculation starts with spin at 60 RPM or nutation depending on the cycle. The wash/detergent solution is highly concentrated at this point. Fill immediately resumes until the water level is again satisfied, which slowly dilutes the wash water to "normal" concentration.

I have 2 sets of the Whirlpools....first one was a KQO, all problems until they replaced both boards at the same time, also needed a new pump, the newer design of the pump is a complete motor and pump unit that can not be seperated....the second set is a KQ2...never a problem except or a static charge that builds up in the controls....simple fix....attach a seperate green ground wire from the machine to the cold water pipe, and unplug machine on ocassion when not in use....

other than that I think their excellent machines...foolproof loading and operation....

laundryshark ...I like them as well i got this model from my former job GERHARDS appliances.
I got this for selling over fifty, and my sales rep from Whirlpool gave the crew a bonus if we sold over fifty that you can own one for 125.00 and that's what i did and ask him for a sales demo window with mine SOO I CAN SEE LOL.
I use it for whites and does a great job with the soak program.
And i think it has one of the best Handwash programs out of the other washers i own, it basically only spins and spray's the load. With very slow nutations.
Very gentle, it is not hooked up now but i do use it as a Extractor for now.
I have much more stuff own Calypso's but need to put it out another time.
Here is the machine.
This is about seven years old now.
