My Whirlpool DD bit it a couple of weeks back. It's a motor coupler which could have been easily replaced, but it's also starting to have neutral drain problems. I was on the Home Depot site, and I found a deal on one of their Admiral machines. I managed to get it, and all the hardware for $348, free delivery. I truly wanted a Speed Queen, but right now they're out of my budget. I think it will probably give me decent service like the last Whirlpool did. So wish me luck....new appliance coming! :) |

Rob, I think they are reasonably well made too, and I wanted to give my money to someone that provides jobs here as well. I'm sure it won't be a surprise (so many machines are Whirlpool DD now). I'm interested in how dumbed down the water temperatures are, but I'm sure I can make it work. I'll keep you posted. |

....and working on my 4th load of backed up laundry. I have to admit, I like it as far as bare bones machines. It still has the Maytag Dependable Care era style dials, and reminds me of the old Fabricmatic machines on Gentle. The intermittent agitate and spin is something I haven't seen in a long while. Plus it has decent tub capacity, and 4 water levels along with all the basic cycles. Of course, it's been adjusted to meet new government energy efficiency requirements. Hot is warm, warm is cool, cool is cold and cold is frigid. Still, it's a nice basic machine, and it beats the laundromat or hand washing (or schlepping everything out to the workshop and running them thru icy cold water in the Maytag wringer). I like it better than my old Frigidaire top loader, if not as well as my old Filter Flo. Pretty decent deal considering it was less than $350 delivered and set up. (Of course, now it's on sale for $259 LOL--oh well....it's still a good value) |

Toploader1984, will that mean the end of the Wonderful 29" wide whirlpool dryer? If so, i will have to invest some of my tax return sooner than i planned. alr2903 |

I believe toploader is confusing a refrigerator plant in Evansville, Indiana, which is closing, with the washing machine plant in Clyde, Ohio and dryer plant in Marion, Ohio. Here's a recent article. CLICK HERE TO GO TO supersuds's LINK |

All Whirlpool U.S. family brands TL's are still made in U.S.(except for that World Washer, apt size thing, which was made in Mexico but was moved to Brazil. All Whirlpool family brands front loader washers & SOME matching dryers come from various countries outside the U.S. Only plans for Mexico currently are refrigerators, which was over quoted by the media as to its size and number of employees it would have since Whirlpool just took over Woods Freezer Company in Canada which Whirlpool recently reopened and rehired the former Woods Inc. employees. |

I'm pretty sure this is what gmmcnair bought at Home Deport...its matches the price and its an Amana. Pretty good rating from HD customers I might add.

I have been wanting a BOL DD washer now for months. Roper at least seems to offer a real BOL model, but the guys at our local appliance store don't seem to want to sell me one. I tried the other day (they have a 1-cycle no frills machine on the floor for $199) but the store manager offered me a two-speed three cycle Estate super capacity machine instead because he didn't want to special order the Roper (aka none in stock). The Estate retailed for $348 and he was going to sell it to me for $220!!!!! I really wanted a true BOL machine so I said 'thanks but no'. Being curious about the Admiral, I checked it out - what a DEAL! $259 for the washing machine and $239 for the dryer is a deal and a half. $500 for a fully functional pair is the best buy out there if you ask me. Looks like the models have changed at HD recently - last time I was there they had a GE with a single knob on the left (I forget which was not included - temp or water levels) and a similar Admiral I think, with timer set temps. I hope a few folks here buy these machines if needed - they look like a great deal. Gordon |

I think that Lowes offers the BOL Roper....1 speed but I think it has the adjustable water level. I looked at it, but it had the 2.5 cubic ft. tub, and I wanted the 3.2 cu ft for pillows, blankets, etc. I know Lowes has them in stock out here in Oregon. You might wanna check. :) The Admiral is really a great deal for someone that needs a basic machine. I've put everything through it now, from my own clothes, to doggie blankets, to my (lightweight polyfill) king comforter and all is well. Like I said, I wish the water temps were a little warmer but things are coming clean, and it's something I just need to get used to with the feds sticking their nose in. |

Another way of getting hotter water might be adding it by manually. I've done that in the past--once hauling bucket after bucket after bucket of hot water. A pain, although fitness nuts could consider it "strength training." An easier solution for long term use is to rig up a hose that could be stuck into the washer during the fill to add a jolt of hot water.

hooked up an 'Estate' washer and dryer. Gave me the opportunity to look at the innards. Exact same mechanism as Maytag. With Whirlpool, you don't get what you pay for when you plop money down for the brand name of Maytag or Whirlpool. All you get is Roper/Estate/Admiral at exorbitant prices. I am never going to have anything good to say about an appliance built after 1975 or so, but for the money, these bol Whirlpools are just as good internally as the TOLs. Did a wash in the Estates to make sure they were set up correctly. Everything came out just fine and my intentionally unbalanced trial spin with one very heavy wet towel didn't bother the washer one bit, either. |

Try reversing the hot and cold hoses on the washer and reversing the two sets of wires on the inlet valve. Some of the new inlet valves are like 70% cold 30% hot by reversing you will get 70% hot 30% cold the only down fall is the cold rinse fill will take longer. You can also buy an inlet valve for a belt drive machine which will give you lots of water and a 50-50 mixture.

John, I was thinking about this subject too - so many of Whirlpool's machines now are ATC-auto temperature control, maybe even all of them. Some of the current line started with standard mixing valves and they've now been slightly modified (with one of those engineering changes we've mentioned) to have a valve on either side of the fill-flume, one is blue and one is red. They appear about 6-8 inches apart on the back of the machine. I'd like to use a belt drive 358277 valve but I don't know now without knocking a hole in the rear panel, that one could be mounted. I did wonder however about using two separate single-solenoid valves and connecting them together on a T. I think the best advice above may be to just get used to lower temps. The funny part is that with my belt drives and the absolutely frigid tap water we have in Charlotte right now, if I don't add a lot of hot to a machine, especially to those in the garage where it was only in the 50s this weekend, 'warm' is barely cool in my description. Contrast that to summer when warm, especially if I've used some hot water recently (finicky newer gas water heater) is almost too hot as our tap water could pass for luke-warm. It would be perfect for Cold-water Tide, no doubt. Maybe something that keeps these temps. better moderated isn't a bad thing? Gordon |

I have the ATW4475VQ, and I think the timer dial pattern is slightly different than the pic that stainfighter posted. I'll check. The basket is dark gray speckled. |
