Maybe I missed the boat, but what is so special about the Frigidaire WO series washers? Also what are the differences between the Pulsamatic, Unimatic, Multimatic and 1-18 machines?

I don't know about hype but I would love to know the differences between the platforms as well. I've owned a 1-18 but not any of the others...

Unimatics

One mechanism; hence, Uni, very smart engineering
looks like some sort of spacecraft
Motor, then pump, then post
spins @ 1140 aka really really fast
up and down agitator
unique and unusual, regarded as one of the best washers ever made. Top rated by Consnoozers Perorts for years.
Challenging to repair
Once you have one you don't want to be without it

Multimatics

Belts and pulleys
Spins at 910, still really fast
newer and more sounds, esp. during spin.
Pump starts immediately, no waiting for wind-up
gorgeous consoles and stlying
Really hard to work on
Some think Multi's are more fun and luxurious

Rollermatic.

No belts or pulleys, the salesman said way beck then; it works on rollers.

I've not yet learned how these work. Maybe Rollermatic will whip off a few paragraphs.

The pulsamatics were cheaper than the unimatics, but were sold concurrently with them after the WO's.

Like a Unimatic on speed, the pulsation is so fast it seems sometimes to be standing still, but the spin is slow because the design requires it to wash and spin at 660 stokes and rpms respectively.

This'll get ya started till the masters chime in. Glad to help.

I asked Gordon the other day if he was going to move on to Frigidaires, but he said probably not. Wouldn't that be fun if he did?

Why re-invent the wheel, when Robert did this topic justice back in '00?

that answed a lot of questions i had about the various
mechanisms.There must have been a huge #of the '65-70
(the ones with the big, black, bakelite pump under the motor?)
at the dump late 70s till the last one i saw in '98
1-18 is the only style i have taken completely apart,a
coppertone '74,newest i have seen was a red'79 at the dump in
'97,but it was too bent up to salvage

Quick Question (maybe for Unimatic)

Which trannys had the one-way motor (agitation and spin changed by soleniods), and the two-way motor (motor reverses for agitation and spin)?

The Unimatic rotates in one direction for both spin and pulsation (CW if I recall correctly) and utilize a solenoid to shift from pulsation to spin.

The belt drive Pulsamatic/Multimatics, as well as both the Rollermatic mechanisms utilize a reversing motor to active spin and agitation seperately.

The main thing is!!

They just plain and simple are better all around than just about anything else, once you wash clothes in one and see just how clean, well rinsed and how very dry they are,you can hardly believe it, the down side is they are very easy to get out of balance and they do tie clothes in knots, but all that means is they WASH the clothes and get them CLEAN!!!!!of course my favorite is still a NORGE!
