Trapperjohn:
Go to the link below, which is for a free photo viewer and editor called IrfanView. Once you have downloaded and installed it, go to the File menu and select Open to open your picture; you navigate to the picture file the same way you go through your folders to get to any kind of file. Once the picture is open, go to the Image menu and select Resize/Resample. A window will open up. In that window, you will see a check circle labelled "Set new size as percentage of original." Click on the circle, and then look at the two boxes below the label I just mentioned. Both of them will say "100%"; one is for the width of the picture, and one is for the height. Click inside the Width box, and enter a new value, like 50%. You will see that the Height box will change to the same value automatically. What this will do is to reduce the size of the photo to half of what it was originally. If you wanted to take it to one-quarter its original size, you would enter "25%", and so on. Once you have entered the size value you want, click on the "OK" button at the bottom of that window. It will close. Now go to the File menu again, and select Save; this saves the photo at the new size. One tip; it's always a good idea to make a copy of a photo, using the Save As selection of the File menu, and do your re-sizing on that copy. That way, you will never do anything irreversible to a photo you cannot replace. To upload a resized photo here, enter whatever message you want to in the Message window on this page the way you always do. Then scroll down a little bit, and you will see a field labelled, "Upload JPEG Format Picture to share in message:" At the end of that field is a button marked "Browse.." Click it. Your folders will appear in a window, and you can navigate through them to find the picture you want to upload. When you've found it, click on it. Its filename will then appear in the field labelled, "Upload JPEG Format Picture to share in message:" Now click on the button marked "Preview Message" at the bottom of the page the same way you do for any message. Your message, with picture, should come up, just like previewing any written message does. Then you click on the button labelled "POST this to Discuss-O-Mat," the way you always do to post a message. This is all actually very easy; you'll have the hang of it in no time. CLICK HERE TO GO TO danemodsandy's LINK |

What Dan said is true; your photos will be resized here for viewing automatically. However, such huge photos might take some time to upload, depending on the speed of your connection; the entire original file size has to upload before this site's software can magically resize it for you. On really big photos like that, I often find it faster to resize photos myself, then upload the smaller version.
Up to you. |

I don't know what image software you have on your computer, but what I do to resize big images is to choose "SAVE AS" and then go to the "TYPE OF FILE" box to save them as JPEGS. When you do this, you'll get a sub-menu with a numeric scale that asks you whether to save them as a large file or a small file. I usually choose the number 50 and they're small enough to use.

Has it crossed anyone's mind that maybe repairmen tell people they need new machines because the repairman himself wants to get his hands on a set like TJ's gold beauties?
No offense to RCD, who I know is a very ethical guy and finds satisfaction in keeping old machines going for people who love them. But here's a question for the Maytag experts among us: When did they stop with the HOH drying system? I noticed TJ's dryer above isn't a HOH type, but he advised his pair are 1974 models. I thought HOH was still happening back then. Could it be that the larger capacity dryers weren't HOH but the smaller types still were? Ralph |

Ralph, I don't have the serial #'s handy, but I know they are 1974 or possibly 1975 because my parents built the house in 1974 and bought new units that year. What is HOH? |

To add to what Jim posted above, the Halo of Heat was Maytag's first dryer design which lasted from about 1952 to the early 1970's. They have a smaller drum, the lint filter is circular, and it is centered at the back of the drum. They heat very evenly, and dry very fast, if not overloaded. I love my 1971 DE606 w/ electronic moisture sensors.

Hey sorry for the HOH abbreviation above.
Dan, what you've stated is the reason why I'm wondering if maybe the larger capacity dryers were never HOH. I don't know much about the larger models. I have owned two standard capacity HOH dryers, one electric and one gas. Both early 70's vintage. I didn't care for the electric but the gas model with Electronic Control was the best dryer I have ever owned. Quiet and efficient with lighted panel. Ralph |

Nice examples Dan. Thanks for reminding me about the SOH system. My sister had a SOH dryer for many years. I found the HOH machines to be much quieter. Has that been your experience? Did Consumer Reports like SOH better than HOH? As I recall, Maytag dryers in the HOH days never scored the top spot once even though their washers consistently did.

The 806 is '74, the 808 is '77.
I found the HOH machines to be much quieter. Has that been your experience? Yeah, the Halos are quieter. RCD and I fully rebuilt the 808, so it's actually pretty darn quiet. MUCH quieter than the '81 Kenmore dryer. Did Consumer Reports like SOH better than HOH? Good question! I imagine they probably did. Bigger capacity, easier access for lint filter cleanings, and dual thermostat settings for higher end models. I really like both designs, but favor the HOH a little more. The 808 runs circles around my '81 series 70 Kenmore dryer. |
