I'm new to YouTube so these may not be what they should be.

sort of like watching grass grow, only with dirty clothes, a lot of water and an old bakelite agitator. The sound is very exaggerated; the machine is actually pretty quiet

It's one of the few machines(Frigidaires also)where I don't feel the need for an extra rinse. The overflow rinse is sort of peculiar; I imagine it was a lot more useful when our mothers and grandmothers were using soap rather than detergent.

I used to love taking the cabinet top off of the Filter-flo's to watch the cycle progress. With the GE's there was an ocean of water in the outer tub. Here, everything's contained in the solid tub. I wonder what CU would say about these now that water usage is an issue.

Can't tell whether there's a tub brake or not. Hard to tell when the spin cycle stops, but the tub comes to a standstill within 15 seconds.

Third day. I've successfully removed the OE bakelite agitator and replaced it with the aqua fountain filter spiral agitator. It works just like I remembered it from 30 years ago, but I don't have the internal parts for the fountain filter to work.

at this point I'm learning that the machine is not going into the final spin without a push.

Our neighbor had the same tub and agitator design but a few years earlier than your model.. It's great to hear the sounds they make from years ago. Congratulations. Eddie

Going into spin..

If that one is a fluid drive model, all you have to do is either adjust it or add some oil to the unit.

Wow the videos are awesome, and THANKS FOR POSTING! This marks the first time I have seen a Hotpoint with this type of transmission. Now I know the sound and how the cycles progressed on the first washer my family had; the one I never got to watch. This is historic for me.

God bless,
James

It's not too difficult of a fix

unimatic1140's profile picture
Ken you definitely have clutch pad issues. Do you have a repair manual for that machine? The clutch pads are located inside the clutch which is embedded in the big pulley under the washer above the cross-brace. If Larry doesn't have any more clutch shoes for that machine you can do what I've done in both my 1st Philco and ABC-o-Matic. Get some new GE clutch shoes and with a razor blade shear off the pads and use some JB weld to bond the new GE pads on the Hotpoint's shoes. Co-axial style Hotpoint washers should come up to full spin speed in about 45 seconds.

Thank you!

Do any of you have a repair manual for this machine that I can borrow or buy?

What's weird is that the machine does go into a full spin in about 45 seconds after the main wash, although I haven't tried it on SLOW yet. It's always after the rinse for the second spin that the motor engages, but the tub just sits there.

Is there a chance that a small amount of water is leaking once it is spun into the outer cabinet and some how making it down onto the clutch pads?

Funny you should ask

"Is there a chance that a small amount of water is leaking once it is spun into the outer cabinet and some how making it down onto the clutch pads?"

There has been, in fact, a "piddle" on the floor when the cycle is over each time I've run it. I've looked for the source with a flashlight, but haven't found it. Which may explain why it only happens on the 2nd spin. You're good at this.

Ken, it also could be caused by a small oil leak. Here is 30mb worth of delicious Sunday reading for you:

1961 Hotpoint Automatic Washer Service Manual,

oh and I love this part...

We need to collect this information for all vintage brands and figure out a place to make them accessible on the site.

Hotpoint!

We had the model simular to the lw125 except ours had a water temp button with hot and warm next to the dial. I didnt realize they made so many models. I did know about the command control model but never realized so many in between. Does anyone have a full line brochures they would like to post. Also our very first one was in the most wanted section of the club with the removeable lid.
Thanks,
Peter
