Picked up this Kenmore the other day. Talking with Gordon, we figured out it's Toast color. First one I've seen.

with a load of rags. Unfortunately, this one leaks through the center. Gotta decide it's fate.

Toast and Platinum

You gotta save this one - if only for the color. Toast and Platinum were very unusual colors!

Kenny it could be a Toast color. Do you have any almond specimens to compare it to? I think Toast went as far as into the DD machines. I have a friend here who had a toast DD set. The washer crapped and they replaced it with a Maytag LAT9904. such a marked contrast of white next to a toast dryer.

more sound effects

i have that same machine in HG,mines an '81.
In addition to the usuall classic BD sound effects, there is
a faint "kluk-kluk-kluk from the pawls in the DA agitator
as it augers the load down into the tub.

It's definately not almond, a bit darker than almond.

Kenny -

I can fix the centerpost leak if you don't want to mess with it! Toast in a belt drive (1984-1986) is pretty rare.

As a matter of fact, the actions taken to correct the centerpost leak (bearing seals and agitator shaft seal in the basket drive) is something that every belt-drive should receive upon major servicing.

Gordon, can you post a step-by-step how to with lots of pics of how to do this? I have 3 Belt Drives and at least 2 of them need it. Heck, 2 of them need new bearings I'm fairly certain.

Dave

Also, any tips on how to get a hold of the bearing removal and installation tools?

Dave -

Sure I can post this info. I don't have any pics, but I think it would be fun to do a step-by-step photo shoot of this work. I'll have to dig-out a machine to do this sometime this coming spring.

As to the bearing tools - I had to buy mine piece-meal on ebay. They were not easy to find, and are not out there new, not to my knowledge anyway.

Stay tuned for later this spring.

Thanks Gordon!

I'll look forward to your thread. These BD KMs that I have look like Rube Goldberg machines, but the one that I have running is a fine machine indeed (1972 70 Series in ugly Gold).

I always thought Sear's toast & platinum were a very clever marketing idea. Now go match this color at bargain world! alr2903

Toast!
I've only seen a few of these machines in this color, I always thought it was so much warmer and inviting than almond. At an estate sale once, there was this model and it's matching dryer. This was quite a few years ago and I didn't give myself permission to bring them home, but I lingered for a long time around them, just like I did at Sears when they were new colors.

I have a Whirlpool electronic control washer in Platinum that was on a sales floor and never used although the sun took a bit of a toll on the cabinet color over the years.

Very rare colors. Nice find!

Oops, I got the money shot too early. This was when it came off the truck after bringing it home, before I discovered it was never used. I had a client that had a MOL Whirlpool set in this color and my heart used to skip a beat whenever I'd see it. So pretty...

I have a Platinum Kenmore 80 set - they are pretty jazzy. I think that set needs a Toast washer to go with! I will have to get pics of them to post on this thread.

Here is another shot - I am thinking this washer would be a good canditate for Volvoguy /Dave's centerpost re-seal tutorial.

Short post or tall?

I have 2 talls and 1 short, so either will work. That platinum is beautiful. KM had so many cool colors. Did they ever offer a BD in black?

My former across-the-street neighbor Thelma, had a 24" Kenmore set in the Toast color. I always thought they were very attractive. These were still in the house when it sold after she and her husband both passed away almost 4 years ago. Wish I would have offered to by them from their daughters. The new occupants said they had their own equipment, and gave them to a relative.

In addition to Kenmore and Whirlpool having Toast and Platinum, I believe GE had these or similar colors about the same time, but under different names. Does anyone know how long they were offered?

It would be interesting to see a list of all the colors that each manufacturer has offered through the years. There are many more than the common Avocado, Coppertone, Turquoise, etc.
