I don't see much in the way of Fisher&Paykel laundry around these parts but had seen a top loading dryer in a customer's home and wished to see how the drum door worked. Well, thru The Pile came this one. F&P DEIX2 Intuitive Series top loading dryer. Play... eerrrmmm... Explore time!

The display is actually pretty helpful. You can get all sorts of info thru it like the troubleshooting here.

The 'lifestyles' button has a few pages of special, preset cycles for your laundering pleasure. For example, the allergy setting is an extended tumble, high heat cycle to kill off things in the clothing. like a 'sanitize' cycle, perhaps...

And still more... I'm listening to it run behind me as I post this. Am I imagining things or does this dryer occasionally stop tumbling and reverse direction for a few seconds then back to normal direction? It seems to be doing this in a regular pattern. As I said before, I don't have a lot of experience with these. Anybody own/use these? I see they sell them in Australia, the U.S. and Canada. If you have one, how do you like it?

The dryer moneyshot...

This thing looks gigantic inside. I'll hazard a guess that large comforters and blankets fit nicely inside although I'll bet it's a bit of a pill to reach down to the bottom if you are short or have back issues...

The air travels from right to left and the lint somehow ends up in this cup. Below are the touch bars for the electronic sensor.

To answer your question, here's the inside... In back, this is powered by a setup that looks like an overgrown microhood blower motor. Double shafted, one side has a big blower wheel for air movement while the other powers the drive belt you can see on the right side of the drum. The element and one of the control boards is up front. This thing has THREE control boards. One for the user interface, another up to along the left side of the dryer and the one below. Sounds different, too. I find the method it uses to open and close the drum door really interesting. I shot some video for those who wish to see it in action.

OK, F&P fans, what do you think of your machines?

Andy, DaDoES (Glenn) has one. He's quite an expert on them. And yes, it does reverse tumble. The lint bucket also cleans itself.

Lint filter?

richardc1983's profile picture
How does the lint filter clean itself and where does the lint go to?

I have one of these dryers and my mother LOVES it! The drum does look big however, I'm pretty sure it's only 6.5 cubic feet. The lint trap has a scraper that sweeps around when the lint reaches something like and 1/8 of an inch thick and dumps the lint into the bucket which needs to be emptied once full. (It takes several loads for the bucket to fill up.) The downside to the lint trap is that every time it scrapes the lint trap, which is rather frequently since it allows so little lint to build up before scraping, a lot of lint gets pushed through the screen and ends up in the vent lines and all over the lawn outside much more so than the Whirlpool dryer that sits next to it! I will say that I too love this dryer as it does a fantastic job not to mention it sounds REALLY COOL!!! lol

horizontal axis toploader washer

Lebron, you're right. There are just 3 manufacturers in the whole world that make TL dryers. The others are Candy Group and Fagor-Brandt Group.

Maybe someone will enjoy also this vid . It is a horizontal axis toploader washer [Jamie .... it's a Miele ! :) ]

I have this F&P dryer and matching washer.

It's the best dryer I've ever had. And, yes, it does reverse tumble. This keeps things, especially sheets, from getting wadded up.

The dryer is fast (mine is gas) and when it says they're dry, they're dry. None of having to re-run some of the items because they're still damp.

Loading and unloading is easy. You simply bend a little instead of stooping down or bending a lot.

The matching washer is great, too. It spins at 1,000 rpm. Cleans well.

I've had this set for about 4 years now with no problems at all.

Thanks for the video. It's interesting to finally see how things move under the cover.

Thanks for the video Andy. I've used this dryer at Glenn'numerous times. Ramping up it sounds so space-like or robot-like. It's a very thorough and gentle dryer. The wrinkle guard can run for up to 24 hours I do believe. Glenn has commented to me that if he leaves jeans in the dryer and let it goes through a whole 24 hour "cycle" of wrinkle guard, the jeans come out extremely soft.

As Bob mentioned, I've had a DEGX1 for 5.5 years (bought 10/8/2004). I did videos of the drum door open and close process in November 2004, I'm sure I shared them here at the time. Most common problem I've seen/heard about is the belt idler pulleys wearing. Disassembly for service is unusual ... the front panel comes off, remove the door grabber unit, disconnect wiring harnesses, then the inner chassis tilts forward and out of the cabinet. Very helpful to have a service manual for this one.

The lint scraper doesn't move, the circular lint screen is attached to the drum at the left side behind the air outlet grill and rotates around the scraper. The lint bucket doesn't self-clean. The filter self-cleans and drops lint into the bucket, which is removed from its nesting place at the left of the drum for manual dumping as needed.

Jamie, there shouldn't be significant lint getting past the filter unless it's torn. Foreign debris such as nail clippings, tiny pebbles/rocks, seeds, and so forth can get caught between the filter and scraper, causing a tear in the screen. The filter is a very fine mesh and can get clogged with impacted lint debris over time, impeding airflow. Easy DIY to clean it gently with a toothbrush if needed.

As Jerry said, it dries fast, performs very well.
