Sooooo... I'm trying to put a center dial control panel on my recently acquired Maytag LA181. I'm pretty sure I did everything correctly however, when I plug the machine in, the breaker pops, even with the machine off. Any ideas? The only thing I can think of that would cause a problem is the fact that the LA181 does not have a suds saver. The control panel I'm using does. I have the wires that go to the suds saver taken off.

If you tape off the leads to the suds saver, they won't be a problem.
Did you use the newer motor, or the older one?

I didn't change out the motor. It's the same motor that was already in the LA181.

It sounds like the wires to the motor start switch aren't correctly wired up. Did you connect the ground wires from the console to the cabinet like the factory did?

Ground wires

There is a ground wire from the power cord to the cabinet, but no wire from the components of the control panel to the cabinet. There was a wire from the panel to the cabinet on the original LA181 control panel, but not this center dial panel.

On a good note, it will fill just fine, but will not agitate or spin.

It could also be the lid switch. I did this on a LA model and had to bypass the part of the switch that allows for the lid open fill. The other thing is wire # 32 has a jumper to another terminal that will trip the breaker if not done correctly. # 1 terminal on the timer is for the suds valve. Just a few more thoughts.

When I did a console swap from an A490 to 712, I had to reverse the wires going to the lid switch to get it to agitate. Same lid switch on both machines, but I guess Maytag wired it up differently. Give it a try.

Nope, did the same thing! I even tried bypassing the lid switch as I plan on doing that anyway. It did something different when I bypassed the lid switch. Instead of popping the circuit once the the timer was pulled out and the lid was closed, it just popped the circuit even with the timer knob pushed in...
