When I first joined here, I created a thread about my in-law family's old dryer. I was very curious about it, because she said it was a Kenmore, but with a side-swing door and the lint screen on the bottom. Some of you may remember this thread. Anyway, my wife and I just came back from Arizona. While we were there, my father-in-law said that all his original appliances, including the dryer, were NORGE. That explains the non-WP characteristics. But the dryer must have been a very old design. I know that for many years, most Norge models had a hamper door, with the lint screen on the top of the door opening, and positive air flow, and they were whisper-quiet. This particular dryer (from what she describes) had a side-swing door, a full-width bottom-mounted lint screen, and the exhaust vent was loud. They also changed the exhaust duct leading to the outdoors, when they bought a new Kenmore in '85. This suggests that this dryer must have had down-draft air flow with a perforated cylinder and a 3" exhaust duct. The loudness of the exhaust means that either the early Norge dryers had audible blowers (likely negative air flow), or that dryer may have had worn bearings and ran rough. I'm curious as to what the early Norge dryer design was like.

OLDER NORGE DRYERS

Norge used side opening doors all along, only higher end models had the hamper door. This would have had positive air flow all Norges did untill about 1980 when they went to 27" wide dryers it also would have had a 4"vent all Norges did.

Noise Level

 I guess my in-laws' dryer must have been noisy due to age and wearing parts.

Yes, this fits the description.

 Andrew,

That dryer definately appears to be the way my wife described her family's dryer, especially that large bottom-mounted lint screen. Her mother used to clean it with a vaccuum cleaner! I always wanted to see the mechanics of this dryer, especially that large fan. I also want to see the drive system (ie how the drum and fan are driven from the motor). The old Norge dryers were so unique.
