a little surface rust, but appear totally intact-might be some
good fix up projects for someone.
hotpoint even still has the sticker in place.

Heater Power

Hi Mike,is the heater on the Hotpoint toploaders round 2500- 3000 Watt as contemporary frontloaders or is it even more powerful ?

Shriek!

I hope they can be saved! Looks like the school closed around 1989, so I guess they've sat there ever since, remarkably unvandalised too! I wonder if the council still owns the place, I'm sure they'd be happy to take scrap value! Also, the place looks good structurally and one would expect stuff like this to be on the ground floor.

Gary, any chance of going on a reconnaisance mission?!?!

How sad...

What a shame to see two great machines in forgotten decay! I remember that Hoover so well - my Mum's best friend had one til the late 1980s - I'm sure Mathew would love to see it rescued! As for the 1509/05 (or maybe it is a 1509/01 without the interlock!) - I'd love to rescue it....

Gary - any idea of who would own the building now? I'm tempted to try a speculative email, but have no idea who to contact.

D

Hello..

I came here after seeing the links on my site. I took one or two pictures of the hotpoint machine you are talking about.

I can confirm it's located on the 2nd or 3rd floor from memory. It was in a room titled 'Home Management' which always made me chuckle from a slightly sexist point of view when knowing this was a girls school. The school closed in 89 but was used by the art college into the 90's I believe. It's current owner is/was getting all sorts of trouble from the council over work that required doing to the building. I believe the council were taking him to court as they will foot the bill. Recently it's suffered further arson attacks and Vodafone removed their transmitters from the roof.

Wouldn't like to say how easy it would be to salvage it, but I reckon you could if you wanted to. I did have contact with someone who established contact with the current owner if it's of any use to you. (drop me an email)

I see quite a few old unloved machines doing what I do. Missed out on the ones at merthyr factory. Does anyone know what happened to them? I went to there a few days after the inital pictures and got caught! I went back earlier this year and they'd all gone.(I presume you probably saw them if not I'll dig out some pictures)

Hotpoints

chestermikeuk's profile picture
Hi Matt, will start a new thread about them then others can build on it for reference especially with the new Super Searchalator!!!

Morning Laundromat, certainly lots of agi`s and only the Hotpoints with the Spiralator

Hi Favorit, yes the 3kw heater is just whats needed to boilwash, although with Hot & Cold fill I never knew anyone that used them from cold, and most homes would dial the hot water in and just use the heater to do a hot whites programme, raising the temp from 60d to nr boiling...

Washers Left behind

chestermikeuk's profile picture
Hi Tumbles and welcome to our bit of cyberspace, bet you wondered what had happened when you saw all the links!!! me thinks the bandwidth went up overnight...the pic you posted was it before or after the first one in the thread?? was trying to establish from the urban pic if its all still there....nasty load of rubble all over it, and three storys up ugghhh, gonna need at least two men with trusses on that removal day!!

It would be great (or perhaps not for us preservers..LOL) to see any other appliance pics you have /or will come across and hear your experiences of the sites visited, in relation to Hoover the Merthyr machines are all safe together in storage awaiting a display feature.

Looking forward to seeing the pics, cheers, Mike

Washers

Thanks for the kind welcome. It's always interesting to follow the links back. Usually it's some metal band looking for an empty asylum to do a music video in so makes a change!

The pictures at the top of this thread were taken by another explorer. I believe they visited around mid January this year. So they are very much on site. I have looked through my original photos and can confirm it's on the second floor, room 203. I found one more picture of the hotpoint machine, in more recent pictures it looks like the rubble has been swept off it. It's a bit out of focus, I think I was going for the arty farty shot.

I'm sure I have lots of other pictures of machines, it's the sort of thing that typically gets left behind because they are so heavy! Plenty of commercial ones in hospitals but don't know if you'll find those so interesting?

Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom

Thanks for your help and hopefully something will come of our enquiries. Fingers crossed!

At least, by knowing the room number, should anything come to fruition we wont need to waste too much time hunting room to room. Subject that is to them not being moved around the building!

Heres hoping and welcome to the site.

Cheers
paul
p.s below is what rustless 3236H version 1 machines look like

Thanks to Seamus for highlighting the plight of these machines.

I can tell you that I am in turmoil over them and have been thinking about them (well one in particular) pretty much non-stop over the last three days.

Fingers crossed that we are able to do something for them.

Cheers
Paul

There is a place in Torino (Italia) where they bring all the old washing machine when are not anyomore in working use.
When I was in the national service in the 90' I use to pass by it
I am not sure if is till open now, maybe it could be cheked on google map. .
They had machine from the 60' to the modern ones.
The first that I have been there it was like to be in haven!
Is a very large space with maybe 500 1000 wascher I can't really remember!
I was bewitch to see so many vintage washing machine in one go!

Is there anyone near London that got a colletion of old washer?
