Looks like it is down Swindon direction

This machine (or one like it) was tested by Which in December 1960. at that time it cost £135/9/- a lot of money for those days - for example and English Electric Liberator Auto would was £110/5/- And a Hotpoint Supermatic £89 - does not seem much but to but it in context the price difference would have bought a Hoover Senior 652 (Convertable), then the most expensive upright cleaner in the UK.

Top loading and an impellor machine, it had a tank in the bottom to heat the water before washing started. It was rated behind the Colston and Swanmaid but ahead of the Kenwood Dishmaster. It would be a shame to see this lost so hopefully some of our members from down that direction will rescue it

Hi guys, I've won it. Logged on this afternoon and saw the thread, had a look and the dishwasher was not to far from me. It's not really me thing but couldn't see it go to the tip so I thought I'd have a bid and got it. No one else bid and I got it for 99p. I have emailed the seller to arange pick up so watch this space. I wonder if it will wash as well as my Miele lol

Certainly a novelty machine Richard.

Congrats on the purchase and saving a part of early dishwashing history.

Be careful of that kitchen floor though!
Can see this machine really digging into it.

Paul

There was one of these in Far north Queensland about 5 years ago (1600km from me) I really wanted it, but getting it back from there was all too hard.

I'd love to see inside shots :)

Congrads and thanks!

To both Rich(ard)s for spotting and saving it! Always great to see a machine like this appear and get rescued!

well done

ricky5050's profile picture
congrats i would try it outside first. My kenwood is mechanical in the way it fills and empties, turning the handle pulls a bike cable type thing to pull closed the drain plug ( a bit like a posh sink) and opens the water valve ( a bit like a toilet cistern) and switches on the motor, a mechanical timer shuts off the water ( no pressure sensor here) and it washes till you turn back the dial which opens the drain, no detergent no rinse just one scalding hot wash , unless you manually re set it again and again. It has an internal immersion heater and a calrod heater in the wash tub to boost the water. i need to get a new impellor ( some still exist in USA) but have not got around to it yet, Id love to see some more photos and hopefully it up and running , i would like to see how different this one is .

well done

Richard

And here's the Dishlex!

Some outtakes from the 1957 Ideal home show, also featuring the Sunbeam Mixmaster Junior, exciting things with root vegetables (!) and a rather racy demonstration of the Chilton spin dryer...

Hi Guys, I picked the old girl up yesterday and gave her abit of a wipe over this morning. I have taken loads of pictures so hope you don't get to bored. As of yet I haven't tried to switch it on but from what I can see it should work. It will need a new mains lead and at least on pipe and the drain plug/vales doesn't seem to be water tight. I expect something has perished. The motor turns freely and the timer seems to work. It hasent been used for at least twenty years. It was put in the house sometime in the late fiftys early sixtys and hasn't moved untill yesterday.

Well done on the clean up! a new type plastic drain "u" bend will fit the drain or even a flexible hose thats used on kitchen sinks will fit if you want to try it, the impellor looks so much better than mine, once you get some electrics sorted try filling it manually up to about 3/4 of the impellor and try it. a piece of plastic on the top will allow you to see it , but i found without dishes the wash force was too strong and nearly popped up the lid. So if you fancy a drive to Durham ha ha you can pop it in your boot to show me !

Richard

Very cool looking dishwasher!
Is it semi automatic?
Looks very well built. Love the pump and the Hotpoint water heater.
Oh...also love your Turbo Diesel Passat wagon.
Thanks for the pictures!
Let us know about your first run.

Beautiful!

That's quite a piece of engineering! Even the motor is beautiful! Both the Dishlex and the Dishmaster look hand-made and built to last a nuclear war. Nice to find a datestamp on there too!

The Hotpoint connection is also interesting, as weren't Hotpoint very late entrants to the UK dishwasher market? She's cleaned up amazingly well, has she been fired up yet?

This Dishlex looks like an early model, the one tested by Which? in 1960 is different in controls, and was only available as a fully automatic machine.

Neither machine did very well in the Which tests, and although I guess the lack of salt and rinse aid didn't help, the wash times strike me as being very short, with a maximum cycle on the Dishlex taking 24 minutes, and the Dishmaster timer models taking just 14 minutes! Modern machines take at least an hour, don't they?

Now which corner of the kitchen is this going in!!! nice job Richard, looking forward to seeing it in action.

Interesting links with Hotpoint who made lots of immersion heater elements of the day and BTH motors who am led to believe provided lots of motors for commercial machines as well.

Simon, interesting point about wash times & results, I used Roberts toploading dishwashers at last convention and was very skeptical about results but must say with the latest powders , everything spotless, although with these racks its an art in learning how to load!!!

Hiya Richard.

Think you did right in not dragging it across that lovely kitchen floor! Methinks it would have dug a few grooves and its only Hotpoint toploaders that are alowed to do that! lol.

Looks like a really interesting machine and has cleaned up really well. Its amazing how things can come up.

People mentioned Hotpoint dishwashers and their late entry onto the market.

Not wishing to steer away from the Dishlex, but will drop these in quickly to garner opinion as to what they are.

Below is the Hotpoint 1814 Service manual line drawing. This machine is pre the Hotpoint Liberator Bosch clones and I assume that this could well be the earliest UK Hotpoint dishawasher.
Anyone know anything about it? The servicing stuff doesnt really give much of an idea....

Post# 429218 , Reply# 43   4/16/2010 at 12:18 (5,122 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)
Also I found.....

.....this in one of Mathew's books, with a picture of a Hoover 3236H above it.

Deffo labelled Hotpoint, was this a UK sold machine (if so, probably beats the 1814, judging by the styling) or an American version, with the picture used as a generic dishwasher by the publisher?

Looks a bit wide and the capital letter HOTPOINT could associate it with the widebody 1600 front loader and 1504 toploader!

These have had me stumped, so any help would be gratefully received.

Cheers
Paul

You know, if anyone had asked me I would have said that the first Hotpoint dishwashers were the Bosch clones, but clearly I was wrong. I suspect that the 1814 was a badged version of another machine and not manufactured by Hotpoint, so perhaps some of our European members will recognise it.

Paul, I think you are right on the money about the other machine being of the HP 1600 era and indeed it stirred a memory of having seen it in an early 1970s Ideal Home feature, although as ever, not pictured but drawn (i wonder why they did that?). But I have no recollection of ever seeing these machines either in life or even brochures. I wonder if it too was a badged import, and what its "foot print" was to indicate teh size of the wash chamber

Hello All, I hope this thread may still be current. I have an Electronic Dishmaster Dishwasher that I have been trying to source further information on but havent had much luck. I dont plan on selling it, it was more out of curiosity. It still works and looks like it is in pretty good shape. If anyone knows anything else about these, it would be appreciated.
