Yes, probably D&M

According to the history of American Central Mfg. Co. (AVCO), Philco dishwashers were one of D&M's products.

Yup, D&M all the way. There was an apartment complex in Austin built about 1968 or 1967 which had this this dishwasher--one level, but had reguar and rinse & hold buttons. These kitchens were underr the Norge brand labe. I don't think those are the original racks.

Wow, I just noticed the detergent "cup". I've NEVER seen anything like that in a D&M dishwasher. Boy, true BOL that's for sure!!!

Even the most BOL Kenmore then had dual detergent cups and 2nd wash level due to the rotorack.

Thanks for posting these pictures. I was always curious about Philco dishwashers, even wondering if they were ever made. Looks like it would do the job although with absolutely no fun whatsoever. I see the knockout for what would have to be a rinse agent dispenser, so I can assume this wasn't their only model. Now I have to wonder what a TOL Philco dishwasher would look like.

I remember having a large catalog of Philco refrigerators from the late '60's; the brand boasted a huge variety. I also remember that they were considered one of the better brands of refrigerators at the time. They were both unique and equipped with many features and conveniences. I'd love to know what happened to the brand.

I was watching an episode of "Bewitched" the other day and they showed Gladys Cravits kitchen. This was the dishwasher in the show, exccept Gladys' had two push buttons on the front. I couldn't decided who made that dishwasher. Glad norgeway posted this. Mystery solved for me--thank you.

Ford Motor Co sold Philco to WCI the electric range plant went to Caloric-Amana owned by Raytheon at the time so Caloric could enter the electric range business this is also the range that Amana teemed up on to make thier ME micro-electric and gas 30" free standing combination ranges. It was actually a pretty good range I have both a n electric one and a gas one which is installed out on the screen porch [ the best place for a gas range I couldn't imagine having all the heat and odor of a gas range in the house] My friend Tom also has the electric version in his kitchen and likes it very well.

I have seen Kenmore bol dishwashers with this upper rack with no separate water source. I have also seen a top load portable Kenmore with this upper rack and the spray dildoe that was usually inder the Roto-Rack; talk about wasting water for nothing. It must have been one of Sears' famous bait and switch models. "For just $20 more, you can have..."

A friend moved into a house with a Norge dw in the early 70s. It was the first D&M machine I ever saw with a full wash arm under the top rack. While it had no filter, if it was set to high temp wash or 150 degree wash (I don't remember the labeling) and both detergent cups filled, it cleaned well. He said it did not clean as well if it was not set for the high temp wash; imagine.

The only thing Norge about it is the name plate.

OPERATING INDICATOR LIGHT--Tells at a glance when the dishwasher is operating.

Fraud

Maybe this should be begun as a thread in another forum, but I've had this argument with several lawyers, including my own sister. When a company with a well known brand name has products made by others, to me this is, legally and ethically, Fraud.

Discuss.

I'm sure each company that contracted with D&M knew they were making machines for other brands. And I think that each company had 1 or 2 minor differences in their products to distinguish itself from the others. So technically speaking, they could get through the fraud loophole.

My Sister had a BOL Kenmore front load portable. If you washed the dishes and loaded it, it could manage to wet the dishes, and that was about it. When I was over, and I unloaded it, about 1/2 the time you had to put them back in for another go at it. About the only thing it was good for was to blow the dust off the dishes.LOL

Bajaespuma,

I imagine that's why so many labels today state "distributed by", "sold by", marketed by", etc. to indicate that they may not have manufactured the product. IIRC Kenmore has always said "Sold by Sear, Roebuck & Co.". As long as they don't try to conceal the fact that they didn't make it, it couldn't be considered fraudulent. Guess it goes back to what we were taught in HS business law class, "caveat emptor" or "let the buyer beware".

This model seems to be the exception to the rule re: top wash arms. The lower rack on it still has the indent to accommodate the non-existent tubing for an upper wash arm, no?

Looks like Kenmore we had

when I was a kid, circa 1979ish. It was the narrow one (18"?) Doesn't look like it from the outside, but the racks, wash arm, and floater all are like I remember

BOL vs TOL

roto204's profile picture
I'd love to see that Norge TOL top rack up close. The tiering is fascinating.

We had a 1983 Kenmore with Power Miser model that had three-level wash (lower, middle, constant-rinse) and kicked butt. The only thing irritating about it was its tendency to blow stuff around in the bottom rack, and the odd triangle tines that were used throughout, which were far less convenient than individual stick-tines. It had multiple cutlery trays and bins and a removable section in the top rack.

The *fill-fill-fill-stop* (pause) *doo-WAHHHHHHHH!* sound (usually followed by the sound of clunking, clanking and clattering) of these machines is unmistakable and Tom is right that you will never NOT know when the machine is on unless it's in the dry cycle. (Ours had forced-air drying, btw, and was very nice.)

Ours replaced a late-sixties Mobile Maid, with GE's vertical-axis pump that was a dishwasher in the academic sense. Though MOL, it did a great job only if the dishes went in clean.

Our D&M is still running, even though my grandmother and grandfather passed away in 1998 and 2001 respectively. It's on the verge of collapse from rust in the sump, but has done well for itself with no repairs beyond replacing the forced-air dry fan when the bearings went in the tiny motor that drove the squirrel-cage.

HOWEVER, if you don't have screaming-hot water, you'd be better off washing them by hand. You can either run the Sani-Temp Wash or ramp your water heater--your choice.

I had the BOL Kenmore built-in to play with that a neighbor gave me when I was 11. I had fun with it but found that it only did a good job with things in the bottom rack; it was a little bit of a stretch to expect that machine to clean all the way up to the top with no constant rinse or other help along the way. It was great fun, though.
