I've been checking the parts in my leaking A606 looking to see what might have been leaking.

"If water is coming from the slots in the tub bearing, suspect a boot seal leak.

Manual "If the water is coming out undreneath the bearing sleeve right down on the gear case cover, suspect a center shaft seal leaking, or a mounting stem set screw leak"

As I recall it was coming from the bearing sleeve.

but the boot seal looked good.

The tub looked good

here you can see the tub where the boot seal seats.

an also

The agitator spline was badly rusted, suggesting a cracked agitator, but it looks to be free of cracks, dirty but free of cracks...

Damper pad glue

In another thread showing damper pad replacement it is emphasized that one must use polylube. ok. But that's easy enough considering it comes in the kit.

What doesn't come in the kit is the glue. What does one use, monster glue?

One mini Joy

My wife's old apartment washer is filling in for the A606. Here you can see it wheeled into place next to the concrete sink. The A606 hoses hooked up to it. I like that newer geared agitator and the turnover.

If anyone knows maytag PNs for such a geared agitator from newer maytags, fit for a 6tooth spline like on my A606, let me know. It's really rather a neat turnover compared to the regular A606 agitator.

Damper pad glue

Maytag part# Y055980 adhesive is what they call for (see link.) I am not sure if there is a substitute.

New for this A606

I bought a auger agitator for this '74 A606 washer. The agitator was from a LAT9520AAQ, PN22001821
more on "auger, what auger?" thread.
see Thread# 28226

Thanks for you help.

Will it really be 1" too tall????

Looking for agitator shaft

Does anyone have an agitator shaft that will fit a A606 from '74?

I'm starting to think my leak was from a corroded shaft where the seal rubs. So...I was hoping someone might be willing to part with a shaft. That or I try turning it on a lathe, to remove the rusty part...somewhat iffy if the seal cannot stretch to cover the reduced ID.

thanks

All upper shafts are the same regardless of year, tub size, ect. Any shaft from 1956-1988 will work. The orbitals used a different upper shaft.

MT WASHER AGITATOR SHAFTS

Even if you could get that shaft out you would likely need to press new bushings into the transmission cover also. Its much easier to replace the complete transmission or at least the complete cover of the transmission. There are thousands of MT helical drive washers being scrapped every week in this country most have excellent drive lines in them people just get tired of the poor performance of these washers and are buying newer machines.

No need to press new bushings in the trans if they're ok. Most of the time they're fine. I have swapped several center shafts from different transmissions with no problems at all. Just squeaky clean the bushings and liberally oil them with Maytag transmission oil, as well as the shaft, when you install it. You'll need a new pin that goes through the bottom of the shaft and pinion gear.

but where...

I ...

well thanks.

I'll just keep looking, perhaps I'll find another machine and buy it for the shaft.

I'd hoped someone here had a shaft to sell.

There's a new one on ebay for 32.00. That's really cheap considering Whirlpool recently jacked up the price to $106.00.

I swear I hate Whirlpool more and more with each passing day.

Thanks!

That's done.
Thanks for the lead

I looked on ebay yesterday, but didn't think to type in something as specific as "agitator shaft". One learns something every day.
