I was wondering what years were the G.E. dishwashers that were the true pot smashers? There is a few at the thrift store one has a odd looking wash arm its kinda off set looking that looks to small and then there is a mint shape OLD like 1976-77 Hotpoint that is stainless steel on the outside.I couldnt open it cause it was behind a bunch of washers but is that made by G.E.,it also it says Whisper wash and has about 4 round buttons on it and a dial.I have never seen a Hotpoint that old but its so retro it looks like it could pass as a new dishwasher.I don't know much about Hotpoint at all.

from around 1970,had a special wash arm beneath the silverware basket. It had the painted on latex interior and inner door.I think the Potscrubbers came out around '74 or so.

GE Potscrubber dishwashers

My potscrubber 1 dishwasher is a 1971-72 model, dial on the front of the door and long thin push buttons....4 buttons on the front console above the door...front loader in white....

Wes, that Hotpoint would be nice to look at and use, but it never was a powerful as the true PotScrubber made by GE. The true ones with the extended main wash phase while using the PotScrubber cycle were produced until early to mid 1990s. Then as the electronic ones began really taking the higher end of the line, the mechanical timer models began being bastardized as far as I was concerned. (The electronic ones did still extend the main wash time based on temp sensors and software programmed into the cycle) No longer were the PotScrubber cycles longer than the normal wash on the mechanical timer models. The PotScurbber cycle simply increased the number of water changes. That particular phenomenoon of cycle tweaking began showing up in 1984 or 1985 Tappan branded GEs--like one I had in a house I built spring of 1985. Sears sourced one that looked like my 1986 GE but the cycles were the bad tweak verssion then too. I felt the true PotScrubbers were the mechanical timer ones produced until late 1980s with the extended main wash cycle.

The nice thing about those orginal 1970s GE Potscrubbers was the sheer power those machines had. They used a whopping 18 gallons of water in the Power Scrub cycle. That big fat stainless steel arm could move water at astonishing rates, and even though they used that pain in the butt wash tower, it could still clean grease off an engine. The original machines had no filtration but managed to clean just about anything due to nice long washes at high temps. They were not what one could describe as quiet, however!!

Here is a scan I did of my moms 70's avacado kitchen. The stove was purcahsed in 1974 it was a gas Roper Classic over/under. The fridge was a Frigidaire Gemini 2000, 20cu ft. purchased in 1972. The DW was a GE Potscrubber purchased in 1976, it had 2 pushbuttons normal and power scrub. The difference in the cycles was, on power scrub the second wash was exteneded to 30min and the heating element went on. It was loud, but never gave us any dirty dishes no matter what was put in and we never rinsed a thing.

Mike, I'm glad you were able to scan a pic of your mom's kitchen. I thought about you the whole time I made the long post above. We'd talked about that dishwasher several times.

Yea everybody says G.E. pot smashers could clean anything and it's kinda odd if you look at the motor power compared to others out there that used a Tower it could wash everything and there motor was not a monster, but G.E. did something right. The Whirlpool durawash is terrible at washing and the worst dishwasher I have ever seen is a Kenmore/Frigidaire dishwasher with that tower wash in it.I have used a Gallery Frigidaire with that Top rack/bottom wash in also sucked, so for them to think that little Askoll fish pump could wash dishes is a JOKE.Now I do have a 1993 Frigidaire Gallery that has a VERY powerful 1/3 Hp 60 gallons a min dishwasher with a tower but I have not got to use it yet. That Magic chef dishwasher at our farm in the lake cottage is a G.E. I checked thinking it was a Maytag but it's a G.E. and its a 1984 Mod and that thing is LOUD and I hear a Wall of water hitting the door. I got a Pump at a yard sale that puts out 120 gallons a min that will fit perfect in a G.E. I am using a Frigidaire gallery hose and top rack wash arm for my Diy washer so there will be a TON of water hitting that funnel and if it don't blow it self apart as it is I will have to add another water inlet so it won't starve the pumps.I have a feeling I will blow something up LOL, anyway it will be fun..Whirlpool D/W used that arm that shot water up so mine won't have to fight gravity but damn that is alot of water anyway you look at it.I guess I will get that 83 G.E. with the dial they have newer ones but I think dials will be alot more easy to Mod....
