i went to buffalo/rochester last week to pick up a g.e. mobile maid i bought last year on e bay for a buck!

i ended up bringing back 4 dishwashers and a surprise maytag a606 washing machine that was on craigs list for free!

here's some pics for anyone interested. the people i met and picked up from wanted to see them as well! here goes!

the truck i was supposed to rent ended up being a chevy van!

it worked out better that way as it rained all the way to buffalo and back!

next on the list was a frigidaire

rollermatic's profile picture
front loader that i originally did not want. i already have a front load dishmobile as well as a top load slant top.

but when i saw it and what great shape it was in i decided to grab it. it looks like new!

what makes this one different

rollermatic's profile picture
is the tub is white, not blue plastic coated like my other two.

and the spray arm tube does not have the ball on top. the pump and lower spray arm are the same.

Post# 437718 , Reply# 8   5/26/2010 at 22:59 (5,055 days old) by rollermatic (cincinnati)
the top is dirty but that will

rollermatic's profile picture
scrub clean very easily when i get to it! the outer cabinet looks great! even if it white! my other two are avacado and coppertone so i guess white is fine after all!

i hear this one is from the early 70's. it's obviously a newer design that my other two with the plastic coating on the tub.

rollermatic's profile picture
from a nice lady named angela. i have been talking to her all winter via e mail and was glad i finally got to meet her! she was a lot of fun and also let me have a mixer and a blender that had never been used!

hgere's the mobile maid!

the racks are in great shape except for

rollermatic's profile picture
one or two places and the tub has no rust, just some dirt that will easily clean up. she did say it leaked. luckily i have a pump seal waiting for it if needed, plus an extra used motor.

Nice finds, you're going to fall in love with that KitchenAid. They are so fun to hear running.

How do you like the performance of the Frigidaire machines you have now? I've only ever played with them, haven't actually had one to use regularly.

i have another one just like it

rollermatic's profile picture
in coppertone but i just love these old g.e.'s so much i wanted a spare!

i remember looking at these in the 60's whenever i went to an appliance store! i was fascinated by that spray arm with those huge water jets!

this one will have to wait awhile before i get to rebuilding it, probably this winter.

now for the maytag!

rollermatic's profile picture
nite before i left i scanned craigs list in buffalo/rochester and saw this advertised for free!

i've always wanted a maytag in spite of the fact that frigidaire is my all time favorite brand.

i know nothing about it but am learning fast! gonna do a seperate post on this little gem! i will say it runs great and only has two minor problems. a small leak around a bolt in the outer tub and a timer motor problem that i am working on.

it's a a606 and larry in parma told me it was made between 1967 and 1973. he said it is the best model they ever made.
i don't know but i sure love it! and it's harvest gold! i can't handle any more white!

the inner tub is yellow and

rollermatic's profile picture
matches the outer cabinet almsot exactly! i thought this was made that way but larry told me the inner is really white and that is a major hard water stain all over it!

i like it better this way so i'm leaving it.

the people thought it was only about 10 years old and i told them it was more like 40. i didn't feel right just taking it so i gave them 50 bucks at least!

turns out the people i needed to visit in

rollermatic's profile picture
cleveland for my last machine pick up were only minutes from larry's shop!

they were a very nice couple and i bought this old g.e. impeller machine from them.

the gentleman told me it was his mother's and had been stored in the attic for about 40 years!

he said as a kid he used to go up in the attic with his brother and look at it! his parents want to see it running again and i'm gonna do a seperate thread on it when it's done!

Post# 437744 , Reply# 23   5/27/2010 at 00:11 (5,055 days old) by rollermatic (cincinnati)
i have already started

rollermatic's profile picture
rebuilding this machine and it is in great shape for it's age!

the inside was full of 40 years of dirt and the impeller will have to replaced but the essentials are fine!

motor is in great shape! i finished it's tune up yesterday!

the tub cleaned up beautifully! looks like new!

i have a d&m impeller i was actually able to modify to fit this g.e. so it's got a new impeller on it now!

the drain valve and both hoses are in great shape!

this machine will run again, very soon and these nice people will get their wish! their parent's will see it all rebuilt, looking great and running!

another "before pic"

rollermatic's profile picture
closeup of the sump and impeller. i thought it was rust but it was only dirt!

old impeller had peices broken off from both vanes. i found some of it in the drain pump.

yesterday i took it all apart

rollermatic's profile picture
tuned up the motor and drain pump and scrubbed and scrubbed like joan crawford on the tub! "nothing is clean!!!!!!!!!"

wanna bet! it shined up like new! i was amazed. i used a combination of degreaser, lime away, and comet!

that blue tape is painters tape over all the openings as i painted the underside of the tub and drain tube with rustoleum rusty metal primer. it's underside will get a fresh coat or two of white paint before i reassemble it!

rollermatic's profile picture
cleaned up. today i touched up any nicks with appliance epoxy touch up paint. there were very few places to touch up. amazing for 56 years old!

the folks said they looked it up and this model was from 1954! year before i was born!

oh i forgot

rollermatic's profile picture
i have a hotpoint front load impeller machine in virginia that i bought for 20 bucks off e bay last year waiting for me to pick up! guess i'll run down there this summer. i can throw it in the jeep.

hey gansky, you asked about the frigidaires. i rebuilt the slant top last summer and used it for about a week. it was noisy as all get out and wasn't that great of a performer compared to my kitchenaids. nothing wrong with it but it wasn't exceptional in any way so i put it in the collection. i will probably use it about once a year. the front load model i got i did nothing to at all and it runs fine, only again very noisy and nothing that fantastic! i will say the best thing about them is the huge capacity of the top rack! at least on the front loaders. i have it in my kitchen and use it maybe once a month.

this new one will get the test run and then probably just go into the collection.

the kitchenaid, yes i am excited about using it! i have a couple front load kd-12's that i love and a kd-14 i have not really used yet. this is my first top loader of the old hobart design but if it's anything like the kd-12 i use everyday i will love it!

i'm not going to use it till i tear it apart and check the pump and motor etc. sometime later this summer.

thanks!

Hey Pete

If you come to Virginia, please plan a stop-over here in the southwestern part of the state. I have a guest room you are welcome to stay in and a few Frigidaire parts for you.
Also it would give you the opportunity to visit Robert and Mark to see their large collections.

What was the reason for the GE impeller machine sitting in the attic for so many years? Did they replace it with a newer machine, and just not have the heart to throw this one away?

Post# 437778 , Reply# 36   5/27/2010 at 06:42 (5,055 days old) by A440 ()

Fantastic finds Peter!
You have worked so hard the last few days!
I find that the huge wash arm of the GE Mobile Maid looks like the KA's big blue. The Shape, Jet holes, not the tower of course. I don't see many GE Dishwasher from this vintage. Did the front loaders have this same style wash arm and tower?
Thanks for showing your new additions!

THANKS

for sharing your fantastic trip. What a haul!

Those GE racks will look like new after you run a cycle with a chlorinated detergent, but do not expect great cleaning out of it. The old style machines before the ones with the bowtie impeller did not dispose of solids well so most of what you leave on the dishes will be in the machine, somewhere, when it stops. Some of these old GE machines did not stop the wash motor during the pump out which prevented the soil from settling and getting pulled out by the drain pump. My impeller WH machine does stop the impeller before the drain pump kicks on and it was better about disposing of stuff that does not dissolve.

Wow, you really cleaned up there, Pete! The KA portable looks brand new!! Love the 54 GE Mobile maid and the newer one (60s model, I guess) looks like a lot of fun, too!!
Don't worry about those racks from the 54 Mobile Maid - the 56 pull-out in my Kitchen Centre's racks looked the same way when I first got it. They will clean up with just plain water and they will look like a million bucks!!
You know, there was an apartment and town house development in the town where I grew up where all units had the Tappan spray arm you described... I think I may just have to print up some flyers and toss 'em into mailboxes around there... Ya never know!
Enjoy your new treasures!!

I really like the giant creamsicle colored dial and backplate on the GE, and so many other cool pics. The green "Welcome to PA" pic is especially fetching. gyrafoam, thanks so much for the invite! that's very nice of you. i will see when i can get to virginia this summer and let you know! i'm curious what frigidaire parts you have, i'm always trying to get more rollermatic parts. will gladly buy them! thanks again!

sharples, kissin cousins, sounds fun! i like that idea! your machine looks like it is in great shape, racks especially look much cleaner than mine. mine will be running by the end of this coming week. maybe i can help you on your's if you have any problems/questions.

aldspinboy, thanks. i probably will use the kitchenaid once in a while and maybe put plexiglass on the g.e. for a novelty. the other two will be tested and rebuilt and then just stored.

mickeyd, glad to make your belly wiggle! that tappan has a big rolling pin like roller in the sump that runs front to back, and it turns and picks up water and throws it around the tub. saw one in the garbage in 1969, never saw another. would love to have one!

autowasherfreak, love the profile pic! yea i like the maytag already, use it almost daily. thanks.

turquoisedude, let me know if you find a tappan! i am going to be calling matt in mich. this week, been really busy at work. have not talked to mark yet either.

tomturbomatic, thanks for the info on the g.e. i am anxious to see how it does run.

tlee618, thanks. yes that dough hook could do some serious damage! i wouldnt want to meet it in a dark alley!

a440, i think the front loaders had the same spray arm from what i can see in pics. i only have seen the top loaders tioo!

polkanut, not sure why it was in attic for 40 years or so. the gentleman told me he used to sneak up in the attic with his brother and they would look at it. it was his mother's. i'm assuming she didn't want a dishwasher. a bunch of my machines have come from homes where they were hardly or never used, some used as storage cabinets!

toploader55, thanks for the support!

I didn't have a chance to check out the timer when I parted out the machine. Time was of the essence at that moment. The machine was extremely clean. Either it was very well taken care of or had seen very little use. I'll take it apart and bench test the timer in a couple of days.

i will pay you for it

that kd-14 was made from 11-60 thru 09-64 from the production chart. i see the kdp2 i have is from 9-58 thru 2-63.

yea the 14 models were the last with the big blue cast iron spray arm. the 15 introduced the 4 way stainless hydrosweep.

am curious as to what 3 you are getting! lots of pics please!

so my money is no good in calif. it doesn't do nearly as good in ohio as it used to either!
