The motors on my D&Ms would all stick if they sat and dried out. I would try adding some nice, hot water to the sump and letting it sit for a couple of hours, then trying it out. Usually the hot water freed whatever minerals were holding the seal, and the warm water lubricated the carbon-porcelain seal so that it wasn't damaged when the motor started.
If you do want to dive in and rotate it by hand to free it, have a little hot water in the sump anyway to provide some lubrication for the seal. If the seal is toast, last time I checked (a couple of years ago), WCI/Electrolux still made the impeller/seal kit for these machines, although there were two different kits for different shaft lengths, so you had to measure and compare. The impellers with the seal were handy, since the plastic impellers tended to succumb to broken glass (it would blow the vanes off the impeller disc, then the unbalanced impeller would gradually take out the seal). Some of the older Roto-Racks have pot metal impellers, which are also no fun since they corrode in place--in that case, I prefer to replace them with the newer plastic ones. |
