Hey folks,

Thought we'd share some pics of our recent finds- This is Ben's A702 we brought back today from a second-hand appliance store. It has the original backlight bulb, Ben just tossed in a new starter for quicker lighting. Once we get a drain hose we'll cart it downstairs and hook it up- good authority says it's in working order. Inside? Clean as a whistle! Ben is curious as to the year- is it a 64? or a 65? A702 209428QZ says the plate. BTW, love the Rinse Temp control on the top of the console! Ha!

And here's the '62 Frigidaire Electric Dryer I rescued from way up in Northern Minnesota. It's not in too bad a shape, and has a drum light too. Cool!

Hamms, from the land of sky blue waters...

These are beautiful! They both look like they are in good shape, the 'Tag should have a date stamped on the timer, if it's still the original, that will give you a good approximation of when the machine was assembled. I've never found any serial-dating information on Maytag, if anyone knows, please share it!

Congrats on the new finds guys, love the dusk picture!

After all these decades, I still can't get past the simplicity and grace of a Maytag washer! Simply breath-taking!

If WP comes out with the Maytag Dependable Care engineering again, I may have to snatch one up..or who knows maybe a vintage one eventually. ..

Great finds guys!!! They're looking showroom fresh already and make a great pair!!

Ben, are these going to be your "regular use" machines? You couldn't have a more reliable washer, that's for sure!!

Austin, I plan on using the '66 A806S and the A702 together, when I find a house. I will be using a DE806 dryer, and now in search of a 702 dryer as well. Guess I'm collecting backwards on the Maytags...next stop, a '57 AMP, and/or an A142.

God, I love living in Maytag country.

Ben

Hi Ben and Cory, What a beautiful pair of vintage machines you have found. The dusk picture with both of them lighted in their glory was fantastic. Sure makes one wonder why in the world they don't use console lights today. Thanks so much for sharing. Can't wait to hear how they work. Terry

Those are some really fine machines. The lights on that Fridgidaire really light up the room. I wish they would bring back the lighted control panels too!

I mean many people still have their washers and dryers in basements for petes sake, where the lighting is not the greatest.

I wish manufacturers would start putting the lights back on these machines. I guess not enough demand and the fact it would cost todays manufacturers too much money.

Very nice machines, thanks for sharing.

Hey Ben and Cory, thanks for the great pics. The lights sure add a touch of drama and flair to the appliances. You take great pics.........did you have to do much to either of these to make them work? They sure are beautiful!

No work, yet...

swestoyz's profile picture
All we've done is clean them up, and plug'em in. This was the first appliance I actually paid real money for. As soon as I saw it in the store, I knew it was too good to pass up, as nice as it was. Cory faired out well w/ the dryer, the salesmen said, "if nothing for it is too much for you, then you can't have it," or something to that affect.

I will replace the belts on the Maytag, and possibly put a newer water valve in it for insurance. We didn't have 220v on the dryer last night, just 120v to one leg to test the lights, motor, etc. We think the dryer will work just as fine when full service gets attached.

Ben

The first thing I noticed was the timer dial ISN'T the same dial... The dial on the 702 that just came home is almost identical to the 806 when it comes to functionality. BTW Greg, she has a newer timer in it, therefore no date. Oh well. Thanks for the scans bud.

How does it add fresh detergent after prewash?

I dont think it changes the water fromt the pre-wash to the soak to the main wash, does it?

Or is this one of those "double-the-detergent-and-wash-on the residue" types?

Ben, how is your dial different? The night shots are beautiful but reveal nothing of her personality!

There was no water change from prewash-soak-wash. With the optional suds saver, that water could be saved and used again - Blech!

Greg, the pre-wash cycle had 2 or 4 minutes of wash and then had to have a spin since thre's such a trail of time on that cycle. The soak, well it agitated, soaked, and then went right into wash, just like Maytags did when they moved the timer to the right hand side of the control panel.

You're right Bob, the pre-wash did spin out the water and refill for soak & wash cycles. I was thinking it didn't use THAT much water! Still better down the drain than back in the next load ;-)

How in the world...

roto204's profile picture
...did it "automatically" add more detergent after the soak (after advancing into the regular wash cycle), as the brochure indicates?

I never saw any flip-doors to stash detergent on those! :-)

You could add liquid detergent to the softener dispenser in the agitator. That should make for a gooey mess inside the dispenser after a few loads! The good thing was that the Maytag dispenser came apart and cleaned relatively easily.

And here is the shot of the A702, that has the same functionality as the A806, that I posted for comparison. I'm not sure why it is different than what is posted up above. I know it has a newer style timer, but I wouldn't imagine being able to get the correct style dial? Any ideas?

That is very interesting, I wonder if the brochure artwork was compiled with some of the orginal design and things changed along the road to market. Your 702 dial, while still very simple in comparison to some, looks more "full" and involved maybe giving the buyer the impression that it could do more??

Maytag sourced timers from Kingston and Mallory so they may have appeared different depending on who the supplier was for original production, replacement supplies, etc.

You found the knob insert I see, or did you snatch it out of another machine for the photo op? Let me know if you need one, I have lots!

Great insight Greg, I thank you. I'll take a look to see which vendor's timer I have. It sure looked like it has been replaced, almost too new for a set being this old.

On the knob insert, we actually found a dryer that was on its way to the crusher, so I grabbed the insert, and Cory grabbed the dial and buttons. I presume that the copper color is correct, it is shown in that color in the brochure.

Wow, really pretty machines! Maytags of that vintage are such good machines and have such a timeless elegance about them. That '62 Frigidaire Dryer is in great looking shape too. The console is beautiful. I have the matching washer to that dryer, but the (I assume) original owner left the lid open a lot and the console got seriously stained from the different chemicals splashed on it. Also, the owner MUST have had some mean fingernails as the "aire" part of the "Frigidaire" name on the console (located above the main cycle control dial) has been completely erroded away! Any way, you sure have found some pretty machines and thanks for sharing the pix. Greg, I don't think I would care to have the "non-vented" version of Maytag's GAS dryer!

Kevorkian Dryer?

gansky1's profile picture
Hee hee - the No Vent condenser dryer only came in electric. Actually, Maytag's condenser dryer was a very good design. The Maytag combo had the same system - a small stream of water sprayed onto the circulating fan to condense the moisture removed from the load and cool the hot air from the drum. Air was pulled through a filter so it helped keep the dryer fairly clean and used less water than most other water condensing machines - 1/3 gal. per minute. After a real spin in another machine, the combo can dry a load of towels in 30-40 minutes.

Sprinkler?

swestoyz's profile picture
Scott - I've never seen these sprinklers before, besides what I've seen on the bay. I'm not sure that is what I'd want to do w/ my clothes, in a dryer?

Steve - Thanks for the comments - Cory's dryer is fantastic. I think now, besides the 58, that I have a new Frigidaire favorite console!

We rounded up some parts yesterday to finish up the Maytag, and I ran some water through it. Greg, the 25w bulbs look great!!! Thanks for the hint; we picked them up at Menards. I need some new nylon rollers and springs for the motor (they were missing?), and belts, to get this guy in top shape for some serious use =)

Take care guys ~

Ben

LOL Ben, I just couldn't resist pointing it out in follow up to our email exchange a little while ago. I have some understanding of what that's all about, having come in on the tail end of that era, but I'm the first to admit that it is a pretty funny concept if you stop and think about it long...putting your dry clothes in the dryer to make them wet again... ;-)

The motor carriage rollers and springs were missing??? How strange that the seller told you it was in good working order too! It's a good idea to replace those and the belts anyway, then you'll be good for many years of washing. I moved the 160 pushbutton washer down last night, will post some pics of it later - you'll love the smaller tub washing action with the black filter-agitator!

Greg in your post B4 the last panel headlined "Kevorkian dryer" you get into the Maytag condenser system would you kndly repeat and explain?

or if easier, may I ask you to shoot me an e-mail?

Where is the water sprayed, on the internal drum fan?

I am probalby visualizing the system all wrong in that I see in my head a Frigidaire "filtrator" with two air streams.......

Sorry Steve, I should have explained further - the condenser/no-vent dryer was only available in electric, not gas. I'll see if I can find an illustration of the condenser spray system this afternoon to scan, a picture will explain everything. Basically, the water hit the spinning fan and atomized it creating a cool, wet chamber that condensed the warm, moist air the fan was pulling in from the drum and recirculated this cooled air over the elements and back into the drum again.
