I think this was the last year for this design. I hesitate to refer to it as a "filter-flo" because by this model GE had dropped the filter pan and opted for the "filter rim" design of the Hotpoints. The fact that the seller says it has the "hand wash" feature indicates this. So this pair is maybe 1993? 1994?

That model is one step below what I had. I had the TOL model with the Spotscrubber function, with mini wash. The machine also said GE Profile. I think my machine was 1995 model. Truly the last of the GE FF.

I would have guessed 92. I thought that was the last of the FFs.

the newest filter flo i have found was made around oct.1994,
it was at the dump and had nice, clean tranny oil slung all over
underneath from a failed or out of position oil seal.
The motor, pump, start relay, and a few other parts were saved as
spares...

"and had nice, clean tranny oil slung all over
underneath "

I remember those days. If it isn't too bad, it is only on the wall of the machine.
Worst case I had, the oil had spun out so many times it had run down the sides, was accumulated in the bottom edge of the machine(which means it probably ran onto the floor), it was in the motor and clutch, in the 4 flexible carbon platform suspenders, on each corner... what a mess.

This pic is a 24" whirlpool, and the mess isn't so bad

Oh crap! Is that a 24" Whirlpool Design 2000 machine?

Post# 450233 , Reply# 7   7/18/2010 at 14:55 (5,020 days old) by duet83 ()

It is a Design 2000 machine. Complete with plastic insert lid handle. (vs. the molded lid, of later years, that simply had a indentation in the front edge of the lid for a handle.)

But then I know YOU knew that, Melvin. And I bet yours is in much better condition.

Erik:
hmm...I'm not so sure that my machine is in any better condition than yours. MY machine was actually in the scrap pile at a local 2nd hand shop. I ended up doing an overhaul. The frame was rusted pretty bad, so was the back. Oil was sprayed around the bottom much like yours. I got a newer model machine that was spotless on the inside and rebuilt the Design 2000 machine. I replaced the transmission with a neutral drain transmission, and at the time I did not know there was a difference. The 2000 machine got, spotless frame, different trans, different cabinet except the top. My machine is the 27" version, with the newer console.
I call it 'Model 1'. Do you have any pictures of the console? You may have the one I call 'Model 0' because of the console looking directly like the earlier BD Whirlpools.

The lid:
As you can see I kept the original top and basket, as that is what is unique about the machine. For me this machine is more of a transition machine from BD to DD as far as the looks go. One of my favorite DD machines! I have not seen very many of these. I hope you keep yours. In fact I have only seen one 24" 'model 0' DD machine 12 years ago. It was sitting on back of another store, I'm still kicking myself for not grabbing it!!

Wow, Melvin. You have quite the collection there.

I like that HG Whirlpool there in back.

I saw a 24" Whirlpool about a week ago that I am thinking about going back for. It was left behind when someone moved out, so will probably end up in the garbage. As well as a 78ish HG GE MOL electric dryer (my fav.). and a 1980ish, Almond GE stand. defront refrig. (more utilitarian there though they don't make standard size refrigs with manual defrost any more).

Unless you have unlimited space, collect with care. They add up fast.

Erik,
This is an older picture. I have a few machines, still not some of the ones I really want. I have thinned out the collection a little and gotten others, like the Ariston Friday. From that picture, I no longer have the Whirlpool Calypso, but I still have the others.

The HG Whirlpool in the back is 1976 Whirlpool LDA5800, a classic for it's time, still a nice machine though. I'll find a better picture of it tomorrow for you. I literally saved this machine minutes before being crushed on city cleanup day. It's still in good shape, I have only used it once, and that was to make sure it still worked after replacing the belt. It has had enough abuse, after being kicked out of the house and dragged on it's side down the side walk to the curb.Does your Design 2000 machine have a console that is similar to the console of the almond machine that has the woodgrain console? Do you have any other pictures of your machine?

Actually Melvin, at this point I don't have any washers, other than my Duet. I moved several times since I had my collection. I can't imagine what it would have been like with all those machines.
But, I'm considering collecting again. I have the use of a large steel shed. Insulated, cement floor, only a few years old.
I've already picked up an 1998 Almond Hotpoint refrig from an abandoned house. Nothing wrong with it, needed cleaning.
And a 20" gas Almond stove.
And 2 propane, vented heaters. I don't know if they work or not.

The appliance dealer in town leaves his trade-ins in the back alley. Anyone is welcome to take what they want.
Menards in our area sells used appliances for anywhere from $9 to $69. The last i looked they had an avacodo stove back there, in good condtion.
But I'm thinking of a certain metal kitchen sink and base I saw recently.
sigh, so many choices.
Then there is that 24" BOL whirlpool I saw recently
the 78ish GE Harvest Gold Electric dryer, nice
and the 1980is ALmond GE refrig.

The pic of the oil slewn 24" whirlpool was a general photo I wanted to show what I was talking about. sorry if confusion there.

This is why I'm appreciative of your handy work there. Nice collection. P.S. don't leave them outside . ;o)

Erik, considering the way things are going with the new stuff in stores, it might be good to stock up on a few. I actually like clean clothes. The Design 2000 machine used to be outside, as this is one of the first machines I have had since I started collecting. When I first started collecting, I did not have a shed to store them in, so yes It's got rust in some places between the cabinet and the top.

WP Design 2000

Wow . . . I just saw this thread. I have what appears to be the same Whirlpool Design 2000 (Model LA 5600XP) as in the pic. It dates from the late '80s, has been in the family since new. It has never been in seriously heavy use (a household of two mostly), but has always been a daily driver, doing 2-4 loads each week. It has never been serviced, ever, and still works fine. I suspect the coupler is on the way out and have bought a new one, but so far it still soldiers on.

I'm delighted to see there is some expertise here for this model!
