Okay, I think my husband finally met his nemesis! He can usually fix ANYTHING. He is a certified engine rebuilder, for Pete's sake!
Anyway, my late 70's early 80's Maytag (Model A806) finally died. When Ed tore it apart, He found a leak (bleach dispenser crack) had frozen the bearing. Okay, so we bought a new motor and installed it.
Our nemesis is the danged agitator. He wants to take it off. I even bought an online repair manual, but it shows a white agitator with a repair screw about 1/4 up from the tub floor. AFter much research, I believe this is a replacement part for the original. Ours is turqoise, and has no such screw! The only possibility is this tiny, maybe 1/4" hole on the base of the agitator.
Please help- how do you get this thing off?

Do a Super Surgilator Search; type in: Boiling Turban of Terror.

Not an easy task, nor one for anyone with back problems.

are you sure there is no screw?...for your year there should be one.....

two things to look for...take out the lint filter, look down the barrel, you should see the screw there, or at least the port for the screw, it should be on the same side as the air hole on the bottom of the agitator, a small mirror may help to see it too!....note: this screw is located on the outside of the agitator, not inside the barrel...

let us know how you made out

surely someone here will be able to give you information on how to get the agitator off your 806.

i just picked up a 606 on a recent road trip to cleveland and buffalo and i love it. but i don't know much about maytags yet.

i have a friend in cleveland, larry at modern parts house. he's in parma actually but he knows his stuff and his appliance parts store is the bomb!!!

if anyone could tell you how to get that thing off he probably could. just tell him pete from automaticwasher.org sent you.
just talked to him last week about bendix parts. he's a character but i'll bet he can help you if no one else here can.

good luck! i've picked up a lot of stuff out of the cleveland area, you guys are a mecca of old vintage dishwashsrs and washers!

I even bought an online repair manual, but it shows a white agitator with a repair screw about 1/4 up from the tub floor.

The 1/4" bolt on the side of the agitator came into play in the mid 80's beginning with the 12 series machines. Your 806 doesn't have it. The agitator simply lifts out by pulling directly up from underneath the base. For the owners who periodically removed the agitator and slathered some petroleum jelly on the shaft, the agitator comes out with ease. Most didn't do that though.

If your husband has access to various pullers, he may be able to rig something up. Other here have had luck by wrapping an un-inflated bicycle under the agitator and then pop the agitator off by inflating it.

For tub bearing and stem seal replacement (replace the stem seal while you're in there or you'll soon be back again), follow this link.

BTW, give us the serial # of the machine and we can narrow down the year and month is was manufactured.

Dan is correct, an 806 doesn't use a setscrew to hold the agitator. An appliance repair shop should have a tool called an AgiTamer, it's a little bigger version of the inner tube tool Dan described. Maybe you could borrow it.
Otherwise, a lot of HOT water in the tub, and on the agitator will sometimes free them up. I've had a few where nothing worked, and I ended up destroying the agitator. They still can be found. Let us know how it turns out.

You guys are awesome!!!! I will let him know the tricks of the trade. At least we can stop looking for something that doesn't exist!! I will let you know how it turns out.
Yesterday, we cleaned the tub (yes, he has removed it) in the back yard. You should see the chunks of rust (they look like thin bricks in the shape of a smile) that fell out.
I will let you know how this turns out.
Thank you!!!

Hello guys.
qsd-Dan- Love the Maytag guy!
I have the information on the A806:
Model: LA806, ------Series: 02, ---------Serial #: 735921 EJ
Ed (my husband) loved the pics in the link.
He is still reassambling the stuff that is attached to the tub, like springs and stuff. After we get it back in the frame,we are going to try to remove the agitator. He wants to try the hot water trick first. He is also thinking of applying my hair blow dryer to the agitator. Has anyone tried that? If all else fails, we may just leave it alone.
Thanks so much!!!

Nancy, don't give up.that ol' faithful will crucify anything made today, though Speed Queens are somewhat closer, comparitively speaking to that Maytag. But fix the Tag and get years more outa it. The most reliable washers in history!

qsd-Dan- Love the Maytag guy!

Thanks you :D

That machine he's leaning on should look rather familiar. It's a Series 2 806 washer.

Here's the info on your machine:

LA= Almond color

Series 2:

A. Revised bleach injection system and new top cover added 1-29-75 beginning with WD serial number.
B. Front panel trim trim strip removed - WD (Feb. 1975) serial number
C. Control panel - Sunglow color
D. New (aluminum) timer dial.
E. Discontinued shading of top covers beginning with WD (Feb. 1975) serial.
F. New pressure switch
G. No tub light.

EJ = May, 1980. The absolute latest production 806 washer to grace this forum yet!

I didn't realize just how popular that 'how to' I did would become. I'm honored that it's still living and helping people out. Yeah, those pesky stuck agitators are quite the pill. If the hot water doesn't help, I'd go for the agitamer. It really does work. Good luck!

New problem

You guys are a godsend.
Anyway, Ed is now putting the machine back together. I will let you know when he has it running again!
NEW PROBLEM: We seem to be missing a retainer/clip for the timer dial assembly. Do any of you know the part number for this thing?
I am thinking of buying a Timer Dial Kit from www.PartsSelect.com..., (their part number PS543997).
I just don't know if it contains this square clip. I have attached a sketch of the part we are looking for.
Any suggestions?
Thank you!!!

New method to remove agitator on A806

OMG! It worked!

We applied heat near the base of the agitator with my blow dryer.

Ed looped a nylon rope down the shaft and around the edge of the shaft above the base twice, on opposite sides (equal, balanced force).

We then took a rake handle, wrapped the rope around it, about a foot above the tub.

Leaving the hair dryer running near the bottom, we lifted up the tub with the rake handle. After the second try, the weight of the double tub, base and motor succumbed to gravity, and the agitator popped off!

Be careful, though. The edge of the base ended up on Ed's toe.

Heat time- 10 - 15 minutes. Pull time- less than 5 minutes.

Boy, you should see the RUST under there!

Okay, when do I get my official Maytag pin? (Just kidding!)
