Hey, has anybody ever heard of this place? Randomly came across this photo on a blog. My search for Maytag Model A's is over!

Would love to visit this place one day.

Hardware Hank - could be Lake City -or- Lake View, IA.

Didn't realize Hardware Hank was a chain - there's Lake City and Lake View, Iowa.

Geeze

They seem to have a lot of that one style there! Is that the maytag A? With the black band on the tank, and orange top roller on the wringer?

Wonder how he ended up with so many!?

There are

2 that are not too terribly far from me. Might call them and see what they got and if it may be worth to go out and check em out!

Maytag model A

bradross's profile picture
Hello Brandon,
The model A's are the very old looking ones in the foreground - usually grey or green. In fact, they were often referred to as the Grey Ghost (wherever that came from).

The square tub with the black band is the model J2L, and the round one is the N2L. There are also a couple of E2L models - the other square tub in the background, and the one missing the wringer head.

Note there's also a couple of Speed Queens! Too bad he doesn't have them under cover. They need rescuing badly!!!

That place is about 2 hours from my house. Dont think I will be going there very soon, but it is very much interesting.

Wonder if they have any automatics among those. Wouldn't mind some myself.

That is not the top roller that is red, but the emergency tension release for the wringer for when you discover it starting to take in your fingers; WHAM!, a good hit on the red bar and the rollers are unlocked. Incidentally, that was one of the most critical tests for a wringer washer to pass for CU: how well the emergency release for the wringer worked because it could mean the difference between life and death or a horrible injury. To relock them into position for wringing, you twist the elongated white handle on top of the wringer, or as Maytag called it, the "Roller Water Remover." You also had to release the tension on them when you were through washing. You rinsed them thoroughly and let them dry in the open position so that they would not become stuck together.

It looks like he has some nice set tubs also.

That would be in Early, IA on US 71, not Lake City.

Red Bar Wringers, only--very unusual

What a gold mine of Maytag Conventionals, nonetheless. Wringer Heaven ;-> Thanks for the random search jackpot, Brad. Would love to grab on of those wringer heads, but the stores have not yet morphed this far East though. The cool map shows them stopping in Ohio.

Geoff's eyes will get misty.

I see a need to hop in the 1997 expedition and go hunting!

I am sure I could squeeze at least 50 vacuums in there or a washer and dryer maaaaybe. :D

The full sized washer and dryer, but no indication who made them for Hoover.

Full-size Hoover automatics were sourced from Blackstone.

Clarification on location of store

bradross's profile picture
Hello Ben...thanks for the clarification. It was hard to tell from the blog I found as to where the location was exactly. There had been mention of Lake View earlier in the blog, so I assumed it was there and when I did a Google maps search, it came up with Lake View and Lake City.

I have cousins just outside Villisca off Route 71 - maybe I should make an excuse to go visit them and pick up a Model A wringer on my way!

Hi Gary....I'm tempted. I have 9 days vacation towards the end of September...it would be 3 days driving in both directions, but I am considering it!
