I have just become a member and really enjoy reading here. I've gone through most of the archives about Hoover twin tubs. I have a 0512 which I gather is about the same as the 0510. It's coppertone and I have the matching dryer. I hope someone might be willing to email any repair information they may have as it's impossible to find. I rememember a couple of members had said they had a Hoover repair manual that included these models. Any info appreciated. This site is great and I love the pictures of the wash-ins!

Hoovermatic Twin Tubs

akronman's profile picture
Hello----I'm in your same boat, or soon will be. I'm picking up a working Hoovermatic 0519 tomorrow, and have already been searching for potential parts/manuals, check out the link attached.
Also, Ebay has some stuff show up under Hoovermatic and Hoover Twin Tub at times, and you can also log on to Ebay Australia for more.
But as for owners manual or service manual, no luck yet. Let's keep each other posted as to what we find.
Thanks
Mark

Hey guys,

The best thing to do would to post any specific questions about servicing/repairing your machines, sure we can help out!

initially, it'd be best to flip the machine over to check that the spinner, pump and impeller turn freely - the latter two have holes for oil to lube them.

Pumps are a weak spot, but they can be fixed and the later type can still be found too. Initially running a litre or two of water through it on both settings should show up any problems there!

Simon

Pumps...

macboy91si's profile picture
As Simon stated the pumps are the main issue. Your 2nd issue with the pump will be finding a replacement. The US version uses a different pump than the UK and abroad version from 1970 and up. It uses a pinch valve whereas the international models stuck with a switching suction type pump. Your best bet is to get the base piece which can still be had and rebuild the pump with that. The pumps are very serviceable, you will need a new o-ring when doing an install. I have pics if needed. Many US model have a sealed weep hole in the pump bearing and are unfortunately not serviceable for the duration. If your pump comes to the point of having to need lube frequently it's on its way out.

Twinner:
Your 0512 is the coppertone version of the 0510 which is the earlier versions of this machine with the stainless steel tubs. These are very well-built machines and the wash action is very good. You have to keep the lid on or it will make a mess :) Also your machine is the same as the international models in respects to the pump and belts. That series are mechanically identical wordwide with exceptions to heaters and voltage. The pump is the 3-port suction pump with the diverter valve in the top. It really can move some water. The drain hose that comes out of the back of the washtub can also get brittle and break, it's a poor design to begin with. I converted my 0510 to a spout, but my 0512 is still fresh as it was a new machine that was recently unboxed. If you ever need some assistance let me know, email is in my profile. These are great washers and have a more vintage look and feel than the newer square counterparts. You should post a few pics. You might have a 1969/70 model as there was no actual matching dryer to this model, the dryer was introduced in late 1969 to compliment the squared models. You can also determine the age by the spinner basket, the 69/70's have a very shiny aluminum spinner with a flat bottom and plastic balance ring.

Mark:
Did you get the harvest gold 0519 unit that was on CL recently with the wood grain top? I have 2 videos on YouTube of the same 0519 in use. a neat machine. The auto rinse is a fun feature to mess with. I have a washer and dryer set of these in harvest gold and they're neat. The matching dryer for this model is a model 0910.

Hope this is someone helpful, I love these little machines.

Hoovermatic

akronman's profile picture
Tim----YEs, the Craigslist in West Hazelton PA, I will pick it up tomorrow and the owner said it was used a month ago with no leaks of water or oil. I will oil the impeller and pump before use, but then hope I can get a few good loads done properly before deciding it does or doesn't need "renewing" right away. We'll see. I tried finding the discussion thread here a second time for that Hoovermatic Craigslist, my thanks to whoever it was, but I can't find it again. Thanks for advice so far, I'll keep you posted on its performance and gladly post some pics and take any advice as I see how it is. I have a 4 yr old Kenmore gas dryer, tons of space in the basement for clothes drying rack or lines strung from the beams if this really dries close enough to air dry most of the clothes, so I don't expect I'll look for the match dryer to this washer, congrats on you finding the matched set. I also have a 3 year old full size (cheap) Admiral top loader automatic, I'll probably need to use it now and then for double bed blankets, nylon winter coats, throw rugs, but I do intend and hope to use this Twin Tub 0519 for routine clothing/towels/weekly wash. Part hobby, part fun, it all started with a 1945 gas range.......and I saw your two videos on You tube a week ago while deciding to bid on Craigslist, thanks---- And to Twinner and you, Tim, I'll keep posting to this thread as I find or IF I find manuals, parts suppliers, advice.
Thanks again, I'll post pics and ask some questions soon----
Mark

A Suggestion...

macboy91si's profile picture
I would not open up the pump unless there is something that warrants it. The pump base has an o-ring that goes around where the plastic housing meets the cast aluminum base ridge. This o-ring/gasket cannot be reused and it is an unusual shape (tall and not perfectly round). Unless you have an o-ring on hand, you WILL have leaks. This is a common leaking point when the pump has been apart.

When you get the machine, fill the tubs partially with HOT water and let it sit. Observe for leaks, there may be a drip which is normal and should go away as the rubber o-ring swells up. The bearing is a non-serviceable sleeve bearing and as long as it spins smoothly and freely, will need no regular attention. Should you actually decide to service the pump, get the plastic base and the o-ring as the plastic is not susceptible to corroding as the cast aluminum can with detergents.

The belts are elastic and may look rough but should be fine, you can pop the pump belt off and spin the pump pulley and see what it's like. If it's tight, I would try it again after some hot water standing in it and a little bit of running. Some noise is normal from the spinner for the first few runs after sitting as well. I would opt for the plastic base and o-ring kit from e-bay as a good replacement for the pump if needed, apply a liberal amount of machine oil or 3-in-1 oil to the impeller shaft before assembly.

Always be sure and flush the pump out after washes to get the detergent out of the machine, this also prolongs the life of the pump. Regular use is better than letting the machine sit as it keeps the sleeve bearing lubricated on it's own.

Happy Hoovering and feel free to drop me a line if you need anything. It was a very nice looking machine and it should have little use on it.

-Tim

Hooevrmatic 0519

akronman's profile picture
Tim------Thanks for the advice, very much. NO INTENTION of opening pump if not necessary, don't worry. I am a darn good electrician/repairman/plumber who's first idea is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I will happily take your advice on startup tomorrow evening, HOT water and wait and observe for a bit. But trust me, if all looks well after 15 minutes or so, I've let my laundry back up for a week and I'll be up late and happy and tired catching up with dirty undies.
Again, Thanks, and you'll hear more from me--
Mark

Also...

Also check this out if you have not... The 0519 is the TOL (Top of the Line) model. You could get it in white, avocado and harvest gold. Some years offered coppertone and other more drastic color combos.

Pretty neat though, here is my avocado 0519 Deluxe edition:

Hoovertmatic auto-rinse

akronman's profile picture
Hi--My "NEW" Hoovermatic 0519 runs pretty darn well. I had to fashion a temporary hose coupling from faucet to that grommet in the top, only leaks under moderate to heavy stream of water, and have contacted an Aussie place and www.AppliancePartsPros.com... about a replacement, but maybe a trip to Home Depot plumbing section will fix that, pretty minor actually. So far, I'm not exactly thrilled with Auto-Rinse, mainly since I don't think it fills up very much before the spin kicks in. So I located the pressure sensor, and turned the center screw all the way out, ran a few rinses, doesn't seem any different. Then I turned center screw all the way in, ran a few loads, again doesn't seem different. So next time thru I will adjust the screw near the edge, and I'm also gonna get the PN, it's a Singer Pressure switch, made in USA, maybe I'll get adjustment info there.
Also, I re-load/re-arrange spin loads between fillups, that seems to get plenty more suds out than just filling once and letting 4 or 5 rinses run automatically, but nevertheless: At any time the auto-rinse turns off and the spintub wait while refilling, if I turn on spin I get plenty more suds once it really ramps up to full speed. Maybe once the auto-feature kicks in, it then kicks off too soon? But I can't figure electrically yet what exactly turns off the spin unless it's the pressure sensor again. In that case, the ON time may never change, and it's a bit more crucial then to figure how to adjust pressure up so it doesn't kick on as early, instead allowing the tub to fill somewhat higher.
So, minor learning curve and all, anyone with advice can throw it my way, but that TwinTub certainly washes FAST and WELL, pretty darn loud but no screeching at all, bearings and motors seem fine but there's no insulation or sound deadening, I knew that, so what the heck, still pretty cool.
With another wash day or two, I may either figure how to adjust the rinse level kick-ON, or just more ideas for re-arranging spin load half-way thru or something, very happy with the purchase.
I repainted my ancient dishwasher 2 years ago, it looks great, so once the immediate thrill of running this spin/washer wears off, I'll probably unplug for a week and repaint it. I'm extremely color-blind, so I'll be perfectly happy with whatever Krylon or Rustoleum that friends say is the closest match, I can't tell.
I took some pictures which all turned out blurry/ugly, I'll get more lights and move to a better part of the basement for next round with the camera.
Again, it's plenty of fun, blue jeans are sort of a one-at-a-time wash with socks and small stuff, but all other regular daily clothing seems wonderfully clean and the tub takes a plenti-ful load, then I split it in half for the rinsing, cool.
I appreciate all of you many folks help and advice, and I'll contribute what I learn as I learn----
Thanks
Mark

Deluxe

akronman's profile picture
Also----mine is not the DELUXE model. But aside from mine not having the silver-aluminum deluxe label above the wash side of the machine, does anyone know the difference? I have Auto-Rinse and a plastic Faux-woodgrain cover, what does the DELUXE model have in addition to that?
Thanks,
Mark

Deluxe vs Non-Deluxe

macboy91si's profile picture
There is no difference in the Deluxe and the standard 0519. The later models were dressed up with some different trim, but functionally are the same machine. Your machine is probably a 1971 or 1972 machine, a quick peek in the back of the machine will give you an idea. If it has the white fan-pulley on the wash motor than it's pre-74. Mid-74 is when they went to a smaller, floating motor setup and a non-elastic v-belt. The spout sticker is a model 0519 thing I believe as I do not own any others that had it. I could see where this is easy to lose where it comes in contact with water so much. Sorry for the large picture.

Manuals

macboy91si's profile picture
There were several documents that came with the 0519, a manual, a Tide coupon and a "User Guide Card". I have all of these and an ad from a magazine for the Harvest Gold washer and dryer. I will scan these as soon as I can, it may be tonight, have to hook the scanner up.

Hoovermatic 0519 pre '74

akronman's profile picture
Tim-----Thanks again for pics and info. Mine has the white pulley on the wash motor, and the motor seems quite "fixed in place" and the belt is very elastic. So it's at least 36 years old! Lots of folks on this site have much older machines, but 36 or more isn't bad, eh?
Thanks for the pic, if that spout sticker is part of being "deluxe" then I'm not missing out on much.
Scan when you can, most appreciated------

0519 diagrams might help a little

If you put in your model number, you will get diagrams(scroll down to Hoover) with the names of the machine's parts. I don't think this site has the parts anymore, but at least you can know how to tell someone what part you need. There is only one set of diagrams for my 0510(12) but three or four for the 0519, such as 0519-30 or -70.

Twinner-----
Thanks--every little bit helps. I'm having fun with that machine, tiny occasional leak from the pump, minor truly. Other than that, it does wonderful work and loud to keep me awake for sure.
I'll post anything here I ever learn new, but mostly I'm learning from you posters.
Thanks again,

I haven't forgot about your manuals, I've just recently located the cd's and power adapter for the scanner. I've been unpacking the last few days and I'm still finding pieces to my stuff. I will get these on the flatbed for ya and upload them from work. I don't have internet at the house, just my phone so I'll put them on a flash drive and upload from either work or the library.

Tim------Wow!!!!!!
No crazy rush, I know you're busy, but thanks in advance for sure.
I'm having fun with that machine almost daily. I already did all the curtains in the house, all the stuff you wait and do every few months, now I'm just down to standard routine dirty clothes and towels, and I don't have the patience to wait a few days for a major batch of laundry, I want to enjoy my new toy daily.
Post or email or scan when you can, I'll check back and be very thankful---
Thanks
Mark
