what the markings on the chrome of the control panel are?

I picked this machine up from the local Maytag dealer on Saturday.

Answer to follow with a closer pic later this evening. Good luck!

Steve

Hi Steve,
I would say water droplets.
Lovely Maytag.

All the best.

Looks like a masking-tape "note to self" of some kind.

Perhaps grandma or daddy needed a gentle reminder of what buttons to hit?

My aunt is blind, and marked the buttons on her Maytag with tape,to help ID them.

And the Answer is:

If you look real close, the buttons have the same on them. It is Braile. One of their customers is blind. I was kind of taken by that and thought this would be really cool to have. Some of the Braile is off, but I had never seen this before. I had to ask, why all the tape over the buttons and on the dail. DUH!

Can anyone make a conjecture on whether these labels are homemade or supplied by Maytag? I recall some brands did/do have accessory Braille labels available.

These look homemade. My brother-in-law is blind and has a label maker for applications like this, microwave oven, stove, washer/dryer, etc. It looks very similar but little larger than a Dymo label maker, his used standard 3/8" Dymo tape refills - in any color you choose ;-) Whirlpool used to provide an overlay for some models in their line, I think GE did as well. Since we've switched appliances a number of times in their house, my sister usually just instructs him on the basics and marks a couple of buttons or dial positions for him to use as a reference point. They have a '02 Kenmore Catalyst washer and the only buttons she marked for him is the favorite cycle and start buttons. In case you're curious, the favorite cycle is set for normal wash cycle, cold wash & rinse. She learned the hard way letting the "blind guy" sort and wash clothes so that is the safest settings for his use!

Well, I couldn't see what is now being discussed, no way unless the closeup had been done alerady. I was kinda looing at the rubbing off of the gold color LOL.

Need braille translation, I can do that very well. :-)

According to the Maytag dealer here in Pensacola, they were made by the owner's family! How nice anyway.

By the way, except for the front panel, the machine is in excelent condition. Needs cleaning, but what 30 year old dosen't?

A Center Dial Maytag--

Would probably be among the easiest machines for which to do a homemade Braille.

It's a little astonishing to consider how complex some appliances could be if a person suddenly lost sight, or hearing.

Lawrence/Maytagbear:

I am blessed with sight, but to say the least, I am with your opinion on the easiest. Especially the ones that are center pull dials and simple.
