I don't think its a 1-18......they usually have a pic of the agitator on the water level control......I could be wrong

Thats the real deal. The top is the give away. Plus the front panel as well. Not all Frigidaire GM washers had the "dry load level" diagram fr the water level. My Frigidaire WC-6 doesnt have it.

Gary, to the best of my knowledge this is a real GM Frigidaire. Some of them didn't have the agitator graphic on the water level control; I have one whose control panel looks exactly like the one in your ad. Also, the cabinet top and the lid are the GM, not WCI, style. Would have to see the entire cabinet front to tell you better, but simply ask the seller if there is a GM mark down on that line of text underneath the controls.

No color on the water temps. This might be a previous year model to when they put the level graphics and the temps and cycles in different colors.

One thing if you look at the filter ,the corners are chipped off...thats a tell tale sign that it has fallen into the tub and the agitator got it. Check the cones to see if there are any chips in it or chunks missing. That happened with mine but finding a new JetCone Agitator is almost impossible. So what I did was I sanded the spots that the filter nicked and now its smooth. I have not used my Frigdiaire for a few years now. Great machine.

The spin starts out slow with the water ejection system sort of on gentle, the it clicks in to high, the spin increases dramatically and the water sprays out with more force.

There is one brief spray rinse in the final spin.

What a great machine!

Big Load of Towels

gadgetgary's profile picture
Is there a learning curve as to how to load a Frigidaire?

There were a lot of towels and at times, it seemed to slow down the pulsations, but, it kept up and did an excellent job with water extraction.

BTW Model #WCD

Serial # 50EF 4368

Any idea of date of manufacture?

Yes, there is absolutely a proper way to load a Frigidaire. It is loaded in quadrants. Imagine an X in the tub, load it that way stacking as you go. In my 1-18 I fit in 8 full size bath towels and top it off with around 20 washcloths, set it to maximum fill and maximum wash time. In about 10 to 15 seconds they're turning over nicely and come out smelling great!

I have so many Maytags, I needed to 'branch out'. My mom had a Frigidaire rapidry 1000 in 1967.
I have always wanted a Frigidaire, and this one is in great shape.

Thanks for the kind words.

It is so different than a Maytag. My mom had the choice of a Maytag or a Frigidaire, and picked the Frigidaire. Perhaps it was because my Dad worked for General Motors at the time.
It was a wonderful machine.

This was similar to my Mom's machine. Four water temp combinations; Normal wash or Gentle wash; Full Load or Partial Load; and there was a Normal wash cycle and a Soak Cycle.

A very fun machine! Very few noted in my area. I had only ever seen one here and one in Delaware. Tucson, AZ changed all that a few years ago with a few fabulous wash-in weekends at three glorious homes including Ross' place! The Frigidaires there were just as fun!

Overall I thought this machine was in excellent condition and was relativley clean.

Working to get some videos posted and linked on YouTube, ASAP.

Max Fill?

gadgetgary's profile picture
Should the maximum water fill come up to just the last ring on the agitator?

There is a setting that can be turned on the pressure valve, and I am guessing it is for more or less water at each setting.

Although the tub looks much wider than a Maytag, can you fill it fuller than the Maytag(and still achieve an ok rollover)?

About how full should you fill the tub with dry clothing?

Gary, you "underfill" a 1-18 with water and put clothes into it that looks like it would be "overloaded" for the water level in order to achieve great rollover!!

appnut's profile picture
Two different beasts, both worth of equal intense love. Frigidaires are my favorite. Gary, Malcolm better explained the concept of what I was trying to get across. And this video bears that out. You select a much lower water level than you would think is appropriate for better turnover. Or look at this another way, I put two 3/4 full equivalent Lady Shredmore loads of towels into a 1/18, so that was 1.5 loads from a WP DD type of machine into the 1/18 on the full water level. It dind't bat an eyelash, took it all like a champ.

Gary, you were right about bring home something other than a Maytag. Congrats on the wonderful find! It sure looks to be in great shape, and you guys did a fantastic job cleaning it up.

The first number in the serial does designate the year (1975), but I just learned something from the website you listed. The website is getting the month possibly from fourth digit, being the F for June.

The video Malcolm shared is a clip of my 1975 WI Frigidaire, put together sometime earlier this spring. Don Shier gave me the tip about using a lower water level (and IIRC, the advice originally came from John LeFever), and it worked wonders when I had the 1-18 in service.

Maytags and Frigidaires are certainly two very different washers, but it is nice to know that we all love them for what they are. Enjoy!

On the Gentle speed(spin) and with min water level, it seems to take a while before the water empties from the tub. On normal speed, the water empties right away.

The other day, when Steve and I were washing a load of towels, the machine seemed to slow down it's pulsations a bit, then go back to the normal speed(on normal agitation).
I guess I can't ask for miracles on a machine that is 35 years old.
I am really glad to have it, and it was $50.
Came from a house that had green and orange shag carpeting, yellow counters, and avocado green appliances in the kitchen(by the time we got there, the appliances were long gone).

I will not use this as my daily driver, but will be in rotation with all the Maytags that I have.

Thanks for the kind words.

Gary congratulations on your 1-18 great washer when i first started to work for appliances in a secound hand B-stock store... there where alot of machines coming back and one day i found one yellow with a window a bought it for 50 dollers lol and it is at my brothers house.

Since then i thought i had my dream job but that's another story, jumping five yr's later, something came back it was another one in white so i got a friend and i took it home and it works like a charm it is true what the guy's here are saying the seems at a nice med water level it has a the best rollover ever and i love it when it has a small pause and then it dunks everything down.

Since i don't have room i will be giving it to Martin...
( Yogitunes ) later when we get the chance the yellow one.
I saw at some where that someone posted a softner cap which is rare i hope to get one someday who know's,
and Ben does have the best video's always looking forward to seeing them.

Gary the circle spray well who wet's better i do recall a Speed Queen does this but not as forceful, i tell you there is no need for double rinses in this guy the rinse & spin cycle rocks... so enjoy your machine and good luck.
I think we have the same washer.
Here's mine.

Thanks for the kind words.

Should I be concerned that the pulsations slow down and speed up at times in the Normal agitation?

Also, should I be concened that the water takes time to empty from the machine in the gentle spin/or knits and perm press cycles?

The machine spins like crazy, and, I actually think it removes more water than my beloved Maytags(YIKES).

Gary it does not sound normal to me,
but i no it does have a stepped spin first slow then
fast at 7.. something or more then 640 RPM's if not mistaken someone here should no more about the the pulsations from going to low and high in a normal cycle i hope it is not a bad fix.
Good luck Gary and most of all have a great time with it.

Love the shots of the spray rinse; never tire of them. And the rollers in the rear-end shot are always a pleasant surprise.

Had no idea there was a speed shift like the one in the multimatics. How cool!

What would be great, when you & Steve do the vid, if you could use maximum fill with a giant load, the way Joe L. does. Wouldn't that be fun to see?

Gary, I can't tell you how many non-washer people I know who say that the 1-18 was the best machine they ever had. Someday, I hope to know the pleasure.

Got mine for a whole $25 including delivery. That's how bad the guy wanted to get rid of it. He dropped it on my driveway while I was at work and I mailed him the check. Easiest pickup I ever had to do. :-)

Mine looks good now but it was NASTY when I got it. I think it came out of a trailer house that was badly taken over by mice. I think quite a few lived in this poor 1-18 but it cleaned up nicely and works like a champ.

Thank you, so much for posting. As I stated, the washer works well, but slows and speeds up during agitation, and is slow to start when draining, but, gets up to spin speed very well.
Wash agitation remains constant without clothes.

LOVE your 'shaded sage' Frigidaires.

but slows during agitation, and is slow to start when draining

The motor start capacitor might be on its way out. I think the 1-18 still had them.

So what does that mean??

Mine is just like yours but maybe a little newer as it has "energy saving settings" with all cold designations in blue as is the graphic for load size. On maxi, dry clothes can be to very top of tub but water won't be, that's correct. I rarely have anythng to wash that requies the water control to be set higher than half way between small & med. At that setting, water is usually just all pumped out before it shifts into high spin. At mini or small water setting & normal speed, I have lots of noise & vibration, at higher levels, very quiet & no vibration. If you hear lots of slapping, water level is too low, very fast roll over, too much water. Lots of Frigidaire everythng in this area of Indiana, had large F. dealers.

PS these machines used two types of filters, look the same on the outside, one is bed of nails & other (mine) is like a sieve. It clogs quite fast. Also, machine could be running slow because rollers are not clean, they work on friction & should be moisture & oil/grease free. It's really amazing how these washers work.

SLOW AGITATING 1-18

combo52's profile picture
It could be a loose belt its but its unlikely, its more likely that the agitate drive rollers slip under load. A small amount of water may be getting on them or they may be worn out. 1-18s did not have motor start capacitors although they were some times added to help the motor start in low voltage conditions. If it has a start capacitor it is only in the circuit at the instant of start iis failure could not cause a running motor to slow down. The problem you are having is not a motor problem.

Update

gadgetgary's profile picture
Washed a mattress pad this morning.

Started spin out on Gentle, and water started draining.
After about 20 sec, switched to Normal and spun out tremendously.
If it was left on Normal, it took a while before the water started to leave the tub.
Weird?

Perhaps I should start the agitate on Gentle, then switch to Normal?

Gentle to Normal

Tried to start out the agitation on Gentle, then switch to Normal. Still tended to slow down and I heard some squeaking.

Perhaps the belt or the rollers.

Will keep trying.
