I am puzzled about the model year of this G.E. Electric Sink. Robert: Do you remember the year that this ad was published?

I have been working to piece the puzzle together in my own mind. My G.E. Appliance Service Handbook, dated 1944, helps me, I believe, to identify this particular Electric Sink as a Model: DE-40. The handbook makes reference to the DE-40 having a piano hinge, which coincides with the photos in this POD.

My G.E. Parts Listings show illustrations of several of those earliest Electric Sinks, which date from the (late?) 1930s. I have a November 1936 magazine ad for General Electric, which I believe is introducing one of their first stand-alone dishwashers, the dishwasher in combination with sink cabinets (Electric Sink), and a bolt-to-the-floor Garbage Disposall. The magazine add states: “More than 100,000 electrical dishwashers are now in use every day in America.”

Based on my Parts Listings, I believe the first G.E. Dishwashers had Model designations of: A, C, D, and E. These models used a Type S-1 Mechanism (this is the basic configuration of the dishwasher which was shared amongst the four basic models).

According to my copy of “A Walk Through The Park – The History of GE Appliances and Appliance Park”, “General Electric bought out the Walker Brother’s Company and moved dishwasher production to the Hotpoint factory in Chicago in 1930. The very first dishwasher with a GE emblem was produced in 1932.”

Then I believe the second generation of G.E. Dishwashers had Model designations of: G, H, J and K. These models used a Type S-3 Mechanism. The lid handle style and G.E. Emblem position are identifying factors. (This is the Model family which I believe I can associate with my magazine ad mentioned in the previous paragraph.)

(There is no mention anywhere of a Type S-2 Mechanism.)

Then I believe the third generation of G.E. Dishwashers had Model designations of: E, FE, M, FM and KE – followed by numbers such as: E-14, FM-14, KE-14. These models used a Type S-4 Mechanism. The cabinet front configuration is the identifying factor, and matches vintage magazine ads that I have from the first half of 1937.

Then I believe the fourth generation of G.E. Dishwashers had Model designations of: E, FE, M, FM and KE – followed by numbers such as: E-15, FE-15, KE-15. These models used a Type S-5 Mechanism. The control knob and cabinet front configuration are the identifying factors, and match vintage magazine ads that I have from the latter half of 1937. It is the KE-15 that I have in my collection (see web link below).

And finally, there is the introduction of the Models: AE-40A, BE-40A and DE-40A. These models also used the Type S-5 Mechanism. My G.E. Parts List pages for this grouping of models are dated 1940. Is it just a coincidence, or does the 40 in the model designation indicate that these models were introduced for the 1940 model year?

Bottom line answer to my own question is – I believe that this model of the G.E. Electric Sink, the DE-40A, was introduced in 1940.

Mike

Well, I have a maid...

I guess the people who could afford maids were the only ones who could afford the electric sink.

Post-war ad

Based on the ladie's fashions, cabinets and also the type of sink faucet (deck mount VS. undermount), I'm thinking this ad is from sometime between 1945 and 1949. This model very well may have been introduced in 1940, then been back in production for a time after the end of the war.
