New to site and have been reading alot lately. I have never done a restoration but am itching to start (my wife thinks I'm nuts though) I am an A/C tech so I know my way around tools and electric well. What is a simple yet good machine to start with? I would think a belt drive Kenmore or Whirlpool with with the "wig-wag" set up??? I do love the Norge time-line machines though. Where is the best place to find a fairly "in shape" model to start with? Any input would be helpful. Alot of you guys do have some very beautiful and impressive collections!

Best machines for parts availability goes to Maytag and Whirlpool/Kenmore washers. Easiest to tear down/rebuild goes to Maytag washers, but Kenmore gets the nod for dryers. Just stick with 06 series and newer if you decide to deal with Maytags.

I agree, Maytag's are pretty straight forward, for the most part, replacement parts are still available, machines can still be found for reasonable prices.

Thanks for the info, very helpful. Where is the best place to look for thse vintage machines? I have found wringer models and easy spindriers on e-bay and craigslist but no automatics Lots of "5 to 7 years old, in great shape. runs like new", but nothing like I'm looking for.

Resale shops, flea markets, garage sales, estate sales, eBay, CraigsList, FreeCycle, getting friendly with recyclers, and getting the word out to friends and neighbors and relatives.

start by hitting Habitat for Humanity...go to their website...look for ReStore locations....almost one in every county.........I get a lot from there from time to time, usually very cheap.....got a brown panel maytag set for 75.00

sometimes you have to enter another zip code, when I enter mine it gives me all locations in Delaware....when I punch in Philadelphia's...I get NJ locations....odd.....

theres a new ReStore just opened near Trenton, were going tommorow......also in Florence NJ...Rick's trading post is a new thrift shop I want to check out....

Many machines and thrift locations I am finding on craigslist, by accident.....
