there's the TOL panel from the following year, 1960 that seemed to anticipate "space age" design that Consumer's Reports panned as being "overly complicated" and hard for the average housewife to decipher. I always felt that some of these machines were designed to grab more attention from the husbands who might have had more to say about purchasing home appliances and whose wallets were the ones pried open during these days.
Analyze this control panel, and you'll notice that there are no new controls here (not counting the new bleach dispenser which has nothing to do with the panel); everything that was on the WA-950S is here with no new additions. The controls have been moved around, some changed to tiny little dials instead of keys or buttons and the panel is enhanced with a gold metallic escutcheon behind a large rectangular insert making it appear more like a face. I always think of the gizmos on the Jupiter 2 from "Lost in Space" when I see these panels. |

I like the "primitive" and simplistic radio dial look of the early Apex machines as well. |

One of the reasons I love that Kelvinator panel is that it illustrates the transition from early '50's designed machines, where the controls were primitive and mounted on the back of the cabinet top, to what was first called a "backsplasher". Here, on the Kelvy, the controls for the cycle and for the water temps are still mounted on the cabinet but indicator lights and brand badges have been moved up to the very modern and substantial chrome plated backsplasher. Would be a year or two and all the controls would move up there. Then, little to no going back. I'd love to find any Kelvinator; very rare here in the Northeast although I think my Aunt Grace had one in the early Sixties.

For vintage commercial machines, it is a tie between Wascomat and Ipso. When it comes to features of mechanical timer machines, Ipso wins. Below is my 1989 Ipso WE-165 40LB OPL commercial FL |

I've always loved the look of the stainless background, toggle switches, and metallic knobs of the 60's to 70's GE filter flos. Particularly love the lighted overhang models with the cursive script and the large "V" in the middle. Just always found these to be very sharp designs and rather timeless.

My favorite is probably a 3-way tie between the 1961 Kenmore 70, the 1963 Kenmore line including the 600, the 70 and especially the Lady K 800s, and the 1976 and later black panel machines.
The 61 is not the most elegant washer, but how could I not love the machine that started it all for me? The 63s are just plain elegant. I think I like the 70s as much as the 800s, but these are timeless to me. They simply speak "This is what a washer is" to me, nothing more, nothing less. The 76-86 black panel machines are an entirely different animal to me, but I have a similar feeling about them. I was much older when these came out, was able to actually buy a new pair of my own at the tender age of 21, and I have an awesome fun time rebuilding dozens upon dozens in the 1990s for re-sale. They sold in hours of finishing them, I never had to convince anyone of the Kenmore merits, and they essentially paid for a pick-up truck I bought to haul them. Fun times. Now I am using these machines at home and consider them 'vintage' to a degree and what was once something nearly new that I was selling is now something that people consider old and novelties. Had a thought yesterday that may be obvious to many. With all the beautiful cars Ford made, any wonder that they made equally beautiful washing machines, Philco (Ford).
Ted, is that the Philco you told me about or do you have another one, the Jukebox version? The Kelvi is spectacular. You have panels I've never seen before, esp. the 2001 Space Monolith Norge Dryer ;-> |

How much craftmanship and care went into manufacturing and building of machines back then ? Sigh...
Thank Goodness for AW.Org and all of our wonderful members that have saved this piece of history. It hard to hang onto every machine but it sure is alot of fun trying. Here's the '61 Whirlpool. Love the Back Splash with the Turquoise striping and light |

My favorite panel, besides the 1959 L-1000 "Program Computer" "All-Pushbutton" panel which I can't seem to find a single picture to identify here would be the previous years 1958 "semi-clamshell" design.
It seems that Westinghouse finally decided to move the controls from the front of the machine like on the the 1957's, to the rear, adding a lighted twirling "Laundrofile", many colorful buttons for selecting different water temps, AND a color coded dial using different colors as the cycle progressed ; as well as a glorious panel light to flood the lucky Laundromat's owners laundry with the soft glow of heaven. One of the few pics from the Super Searcholators files taken , or kept by member Gansky. |

this has got to be one of the coolest message threads yet...thanks so much for all of the pics...I remember a lot of these machines out back in the parking lot at Western Appliance where I worked as a kid in the 60's...I hooked up this long extension cord to a hidden plug at the base of a light pole so I could play with the tons of washers that came in every week and getting plenty of electrical shocks along the way...I especially remember that Philco posted by GadgetGary with it's space-age controls and those colored buttons and that blue tub...

Malcalm what a fantastic Thread !!!
I have to say that all of the members washers here are stunning,I just wished you guy's post your collections to Photos of collections so the public and members can see your beautiful machinery with the understanding first to our webmaster i beleave you have to E-mail Robert for your collection to be seen. That said...Greg ( Gansky ) Maytag is one of my faverites i think this picture gives it more of a glamore shot. When growing up we had a maytag BOL model that had one cycle you fill it by the control knob one rocker switch for Hot & Cold. It had a gyrator in the tub,I had a photo of it in my old computer so it is locked in there until i retrive it at some point maybe someone here might have it. Simplicity at it's best. Here is a few i have and like. Greg's machine. P.S. I saw this similar machine on Beverly Hillbilly's Show, in a brown color. And in Batman the second movie with Chriss O'Donald as Robin, He and alfred in the Batman Estate in the laundry room... O'Donald was clowning around with alfred with jeans swinging in his hand or something to that effect. I saw this Maytag washer in white it looked great in the movie they where in a pair. Seems that they where a very popular pair. This post was last edited 10/05/2010 at 23:25 |

No need to post a picture. My favorite console will always be the center dial 806 Maytag, circa 1968-1971. Beautiful in its simplicity. |

here is another shot of that dial that you asked for - It's not the greatest pic - but it shows some detail. I can't recall the exact model# - I will have to take a look. |

I have been silent about my Thor since mentioning it back in July. The reason is that I have not had time to work on it, therefore nothing to show or discuss. However, this thread gives me the opportunity to talk a little about the machine based on the operating instructions that came with the machine. The control knob has five positions. The “Dry” position, while washing clothes, means Spin; while washing dishes, means Air Circulation (caused by the spinning disk in the bottom of the dishwasher tub). The “Wash” position, while washing clothes, means Agitate; while washing dishes, means the Water Distributor produces water action on the dishes (the spinning disk circulates the water while the water distributor oscillates back and forth to pick the water up through two ‘L’ shaped tubes). The “Off” position, both left and right, disengages the transmission. Water temperature is controlled by the operator, both for Washing and Rinsing clothes, and for Pre-Rinsing, Washing, and Rinsing dishes. When washing clothes, the Wash and Spin times are controlled by the operator, and obviously coincides with the type of fabric, soil content, and desired dryness. Likewise, when washing dishes, the number of pre-rinses, length of wash time, and number & duration of post rinses are controlled by the operator. I am really looking forward to being able to getting my hands dirty fixing/repairing/rebuilding this machine, and sharing it with all of you. I also intend to scan and attach all of the printed material that came with the machine. Mike |

mickeyd---I didn't know Jimmy had a Norge Dispensomat. What a cool machine to own! That clock with the delay start feature really does make it look like a 1960's range.

Center dial Maytags and Whirlpool 70's and earlier, the slanted panels with the large plastic dials are my favorites. The 80's model with the times painted on are ok, but I like the big plastic dials the best. |

The "cards" you refer to are known as Keyplates, which are used to select the programme, and had been around in various formats since 1963. They are used to select define the programme selected via the slots that are visible on the plates above. Although it sounds very sophisticated its just a variation on the rotary mechanical dial. Chestermike has a picture which shows a wide variety of Keyplates in different colours for all the "flavours" of Keymatic. Al |

I'm with Tim on this one, see immediately above. I have a Speed Queen wringer with a pump, an Easy Spindrier now working very well, does an excellent job, but my Hoover Twin Tub is the best all around machine. Fast cleaning, excellent rinsing and nearly dry extraction, small enough that you can customize loads for hot-soak-cold-wash-n-wear, etc, whatever your needs, also fast enough to race through a boatload of dirty tons. Whether it's the console we're talking or the machine's actual performance, he's right: Simple Functionality at its Finest!

The lights always get me, too. The TOL panels do steal the show, but the simplicity and utilitarian style of the early machines is a draw as well.

I have not before seen this GE dryer to best of recollection. The top of the panel appears lighted but I'm guessing it's a reflection of overhead lighting or camera flash. The General Electric / Compensated Control(?) panel at the bottom is lighted, yes?

Here's my 1972 Kenmore. Very unique as I'm fairly certain this style was done for one model year only.
I acquired this from Eugene at Lorraine Furniture, btw. He had posted videos of it and said it was in too poor condition for him to save, so I inquired about obtaining parts (specifically the console and it's Roto Flex agitator). Eugene graciously offered me the machine if I wanted it. Needless to say, that next weekend I was off on a road trip to pick it up. Unfortunately, I've not gotten far on any kind of restoration, but have a few other machines of the similar era that I've got plenty of parts to hopefully get this beauty running like new. |
