Over the past few years, with another increase just this year. This effects both domestic and commercial users.
This past summer, with it's hot weather and low rain fall saw fewer green lawns and gardens around NYC, including Staten Island (a place known for being green". No one wanted to pay the extra funds, especially in this economy just to water lawns. Our local laundromat person told us that the city does keep an eye on laundromats, and if water is seen above a certain level on the door, they can be fined. Though not sure if this only applies during drought warnings/conditions. Laundromats in NYC, and elsewhere one suspects are caught between a rock and a hard place. High or very high fixed costs (water, utilites, rent, etc), versus limits on what customers will pay. Many laundromats get around raising prices too steeply by either cutting back on water, especially hot water, or my personal pet peeve, shortening dryer time for that quarter. |
