Paul painstakingly cleaned up old "Libby" after collecting her, doing a fab job as always she was worthy of being shown.

Thankyou to Paul for the love, effort and affection her put into her.

All washed up and polished she shows her real beauty despite her previous owners deciding to paint her once navy kickstrip a nice shade of S*** brown.

Anyone any ideas as to the correct shade and the best way to make her original again we would love to hear.

No jokes here - this really is a true Hotpoint Liberator 1828 as she left the factory with 3 legged suspension, back panel incl ratings plate, motor - early and slightly different to the later GEC motors.

No fakes here.

Our beloved "Libby" has arrived!

I'm speechless! I take it this is the one from Manchester? Is she working? The motor will sound interesting... Now only that we have at least one of the 2nd gen Hotpoint FL's have been found maybe our "Holy Grail" 1600/1830 will pop up by surprise. I hope I can feel the excitement of finding a rarity sometime. Show us more Rob! Congrats to you and Paul!

Excellent find (at last) when you think how many dryers are still floating about but the poor washers rarely survived as long

Well it comes together now, so where it did it come from?

Hi Paul & Rob

Just love your new find. I use to love the purple range of Hotpoint washers.

I sure the kickplate was painted a dark grey colour.

I had one of those Hot-Point dryers a long time ago in a previous life. It worker superbly it was virtually silent as well and lasted for ever. I left it behind when I moved. I think my ex that lives in the flat now may still be using it. I must check next time I see them. I know the Miele washer is still going 34 years later.

hey guys, firsty congrats on such a savage find,im kicking myself as had two of these beauties years ago but was ignorant to how rare they would become, and (kicking myself) dumped them
on the subjesct of plastic yellowing iv picked up many machines which were as yellow as a banana, only by chance i found a way of getting rid of it was to leave the plastic out in a few showers of rain,it seems to bring it back to white....try it and see

congrats again lads on a great find

Hey Guys..

Now i know I maybe losing my mind..but was there ever a Hotpoint Liberator washer with 5 coloured buttons..?

Shortly after my mum got rid of her Liberator Toploader, she went onto a stacking washer/dryer, as we had recenly moved to our newly built house that my dad had finished building and it had a utility room, the stacking option gave more space..I am sure it had 5 buttons, 1 white and 4 deceasing shades of purple buttons..??
Cheers

Yes the motor should be interesting, we have yet to try it out. Both of us are still so gobsmacked we managed to get it that we both still have to pinch ourselves to make sure its real. We both also cant believe it still that we aint even plugged her in. Weird aint it?!!!

Videos when we do actually plug it in.

AEGKARAT - yes when I get chance I will do.

GARY and MIKE - Paul will add later with its story and work done to it as he has it at his place for the past 5 weeks and it only just recently came to Crewe so god knows what hes been up to with it lol.

NickUK - thanks, to say again its really a dream come true but saying that it just goes to show if you put in hard work and determination what you want will eventually come your way. Things really are outthere and its up to you to find them.

SIMON - cheers mate, we will skip the attempt at removing the discoloration for now until another drawer cover makes itself known as we dont want to risk detroying it completely but thanks for the info though we really do appreciate it ~ another member mentioned use of Ambisol boat fluid to restore the whiteness but until we wish to risk it I think its best to leave well alone.

MIKELONDON - Welcome to the group. Yes they were fab machines, Certainly a style statement that funnily has come back around in fashion.

IRISHMARK - Oh dear we all learn by mistakes. I let an 1848 go in the early days of collecting. This has certainly made up for it though.

LEE -- Just enjoy the show. Pictures always speak more than words.

KEITH - No you probably are cracking up LOL. No knowledge of 5 button Automatics, even service manuals dont mention one.

Thanks to all that responded. More pics on the way.

Rob and Paul

Crumbs I think I must be really going mad...lol (but i am going back 30years)..the tumble dryer she had was a 1701, as i still have the instruction booklet.

..next question..was there a "Spray" symbol on the dial for the washer for a 1701 tumble...?? I seem to rememeber that on mum's.. and they would have been bought together. Or am I totally losing it..LOL

Hi,congratulations on your new find and looks all original too ,even a black door boot.Does it have the E.M.D. motor, which is realy noisy .Made by electric motor developments of essex.Used by hotpoint for a short while identified by only having 1 field coil and rather minimalist skeletal apearance. As for the kickstip i dont think they had one and is just same textured charcoal grey paint as the rest of the chasis. As for the colour shading of the option buttons am i right in thinking it coresponds to colour shading on the programe dial as to which option can be used with that particular programe.Anyway great save cant wait to hear it on spin ,they can keep their super silent shh Hotponts.yawn,Regards Nige.

Hotpoint Liberator

Hey, Paul and Rob

It seems like a long time since I last saw the both of you at Mike's last wash-in! Congratulations on acquiring that lovely hottie, I'm sure you're both over the moon. Will the both of you be planning a wash-in any time in the future as I would love to take a closer look at all those hotpoints?? Lol

As for the yellow soap draw, you could try using a plastic colour restorer called Polytrol!

Nige, I have yet to inspect the insides myself but from what I gather it may be an EMD - Paul seems to think the brushes screw in?

Yes you are right about the dial colours prompting you to select certain options.

Keith, I suspect your mums Liberator was a later one. The words were replaced with symbols on the later ones.

Robbie,

How the devil are you? All well here as you can tell. Polytrol - thats it (Dunno where i got Ambersill from) I remember now it was you at Mikes last do that told us about it. Been racking my brains as to whom id heard it from.

Will certainly let you know if there are any developments in allowing a wash in at my place as soon as they happen.
Come and play all you like then..... theres plenty of em

Message from t'other half.

Hi all.

Many thanks for the comments and yep, it is truely nice to finally have a bit of front loading, wet Amethyst (the official name of the shade of purple) in the fold.

When I went to collect the 1828/02, it was a good few minutes before I even touched it! I just stood and stared in awe as to what was in front of me. After a while, a gentle fingertip touch confirmed that there was a Hotpoint Liberator in front of me and that it wasnt a figment of my imagination.

What made it all the more special is that the 1828/02 was the very model that lived next door to me, when I was a kid.
Uncle Bob even tape recorded his machine and presented me with the cassette, so I could put a tape recorder in the many box machines that I used to make and have full sound effects.

The last time I saw that machine (and any wet front loading GEC Liberator) was around 1987.
About six months ago, 23 years after last seeing it, I asked Uncle Bob whether he still had their machine. After a couple of minutes of confusion and remembering, the answer came back 'no':-( and that it they had had their current machine (a Bosch) for around 15 years.

The last known location of a 'piece of purple' was gone and the trail was cold fill only:-(

Then I gets a text message whilst at work and, after a week or so, went to collect a 1828/02!

Paul

Hi Keith.

Just to confirm that, to the best of my knowledge, there was never a 5 button fron loading Liberator.

The Liberator fleet was made up of, in order of introduction:

1973...
1850 - 4 button de luxe
(there was to be a single button, cold fill model in the form of the 1840, but this was never built)

1974...
1851 - 4 button de luxe, with interlock

1975...
1851/03 - 4 button de luxe, with fabric conditioner compartment and associated changes to the internal plumbing

1976...
1823 - cold fill Zanussi, with no option buttons
1826 - hot and cold Zanussi, with two option buttons
1828/01 - 4 button de luxe (pre production)
1828/02 - 4 button de luxe (production machines)

1828/03, 1828/04, 1828/05 & 1828/06 were Morphy Richards, GALA, GEC Australia and Export versions (cant remember the order though)

1978...when the shower and swirly spin symbols were introduced
1824/01 - 2 button 800rpm only
1828/07 - 4 button de luxe 800/400rpm
1848/01 - 4 button super de luxe with 1000to400 variable spin

1979...saw the introduction of the clear door machines
18340 2 button standard
18380 4 button de luxe
18580 variable

With your mums machine having the shower symbol it would be from the 1978 series and, with it not being variable and having more than two buttons, I reckon it would have been a 1828/07. Piccy below...

Hi Robbie.

Good to hear from you. Believe me , not being able to plug and play is mighty frustrating - neither myself or Rob have actually been able to do either of these things woth the 1828/02 yet! grrrrrr.

I was mighty pi$$ed off not to have won the £113million lottery recently, as it would have come in very useful in getting a garage with electric and a water supply! complaint letter to Camelot was sent last week enquiring as to why I hadnt won, but dont expect a response. still, I have made my disappointment known and hopefully they will make amends in the near future. Wont hold my breath though.

If you are north of brum of a weekend and passing Crewe, let either of us know and we will gladly introduce you to the wall of Hotpoint, on one side, and Hoover, Creda, Ariston, Colston, Servis, Bendix, Electra and Zanussi on the other.

Cheers
Paul

The motor in our 1828/02 also has screw in brushes, which is a abit of an inconvenience as to replace them you have to remiove the motor from the machine. Piccy attached below...

Hi Jon.

Absolutely a special edition!
I have a rough idea that it will find its way upto my parents, to have the kickstrip resprayed and might just have to plumb it in by the garage door, in such a way as to let next door see it. See if it jogs their memories a bit.

All is fine - just knackered from running round like a blue arsed fly and perpetually worrying about not having enough room for stuff. You know how it is. lol.

Still not had chance to play with that 2 tonne AEG yet?
Paul

Hi Tom and Matt.

Matt - you mentioned the woolmark sticker - i dont ever remember seeing them stuck on the later 18-series machines! Does anyone have any memories of the silver and browns carrying this appendidge?
I've just been back and looked at all the pics of 18's and, barring the Liberators, not a woolmark sticker to be seen.

Tom - the frustration of not being able to plug and plumb it in is getting tiresome. If we cant get the machine to my parents soon, then dont be surprised to see two blokes wheeling an 1828/02 through your store! lol.

And i havent got any!!!! (stomps around like a moody teenager)

Paul your ability to not only to clean and restore machines to pristine is gobsmacking but to then have the patience to do all those before and after fots breaks all limits.

I dream of doing it, but by the time i have messed around getting the bugger running i am too knackered to bother (hence my hurried crap fots).........

We need another section on this site for restorations of all sorts.

So again Paul well done it is a gem

Liberator

Oh I see so this was the machine s that took the liberator name from English Electric of the 1960's which confirms was absorbed by the then GEC who then sold Hotpoint to Indesit, Nice design though. Pity GEC became MArconi a shadow of itself, interesting collection how on earth doe you maintain all these machines wonderful though

Well Done

Paul and Rob,

I know I've congratulated you in person, but well done on getting your dreams come true this year with this great hotpoint and the hoover 3236h, and Paul what skillful hands they have come to, your patience has to be admired, I'm very much with Gary, get the wires into the quick plug and start her up, see what happens lol. Then have a cup of tea and go from there.

Yep, get it up to your mum and dads and enjoy

Such patience, I’m afraid I would have had her wired up and plumbed in on the garden hose within 5 mins of getting it out of the car, and most likely flooding the garage or getting a shock because it’s not electrical sound.

Hiya Gary and Lee.

Not having the tools or skills to tinker mechanically or electrically, I have to channel my enthusiasm down another avenue - hence the making things look pretty.

A challenging alternative to making things work is making them look good.

Believe me though - when we get established, hopefully with a garage and the like, I will hit the mechanical and electrical side hard. Be great to be able do what you guys and Mathew do with total ease. One day.....starts to dream.....

Hi Keith.

Yep - the amethyst Hotpoints adopted the name of the old English Electric machines and became the new 'Liberator' series in 1973, the name being finally dropped in 1979.

Always a challenge keeping them all good - not having a suitable venue for all the machines being a major bugbear of mine.

Ho, I going to start rambling about my memories of my liberator before it was sent to Coventry in a skip.

I adopted my 1828-02 from my auntie on my dad’s side, when I was about 13; she had just bought a new 95 series machine so I begged it off her. The bearings where like driving down a main road around here, full of potholes you see, the hot water valve did not work and the timer used to stick between 4 and 6. So I striped it down fixed all the problems including one which dogged it from new, there is a micro switch at the top of the powder draw, ever time the machine spun the draw would jiggle out and release the micro switch which would isolate the water valves and stop the machine after each rinse, I by passed it. Auntie asked for it back about 3 months later when she visited, of course you cant was my reply. She went on that the new machine was not as good, tough luck.

Then it disappeared on the back of a skip lorry one day.

Ramblings over.

Paul, is there a little nib in the centre of the soap draw which engages into the centre empty screw hole in the top row of fixings in the facia, I can see the hole, wondered if Hotpoint stopped using this safety feature as it was problematic in the early machines.

Mine also had a black rubber drain hose.

She looking better every day.

Hi Lee.

A tragic tale and all the more galling as you had got it going again. grrrrrrrr.

The mistakes of our parents! Little did he know what a foolish act throwing that machine away was.

The Powder Drawer nib...

yep there is a nib on the back of the powder drawer facia and it sits snugly in the little hole.

Will have to see whther the microswitch is still active, when its plumbed and plugged in.

The powder drawer itself cleaned up really well too and finished up with a lovely 'Casatta' green hue to it!

The nib can be spied in the piccy below...

p.s nearly forgot.

Lee - you mentioned the waste hose.
Yep- this 1828 also had its original black rubber waste hose fitted, but it had been cut off at half full length.
We think it had literally rose out of the machine and curved once, before going into the standpipe.
As such it was very short and lacked flexibility, so it was replaced by the ugly modern plastic affair.

Should be temporary though, as we have three or four full length black hoses - fingers crossed they arent all toploader ones!

Also, the modern pump that the machine came with was also replaced! Its replacement is an actual Liberator pump which was manufactured by Hotpoint themselves in Peterborough.

I am told that it sounds slightly different to the more usual pumps that we all know and love, which were fittd to the later 18s and all the 95s.

Cant wait to plug and play!

Fantastic!

Hi Rob and Paul

Well done - what a fantastic save! It goes to show they're still out there waiting to be rescued! Paul - amazing detailing work - might be looking for some advice when it comes to get the 1509 into action. It looks like you have to whole 1976 laundry line up under wraps - most impressive!

Re the drain hose - IIRC the Hotpoint Front Loaders had a drain hose identical to the Hoover matchboxes, which are still available, so you should be ok sorting one of those - the little horizontal slot under the fill valves was for the hose hook (also a la Hoover) - the only difference is that the Hoover came up the left side of the rear cover whereas the Hotpoint came up the right (looking at the back of the machine) - I'm guessing it was the same hose and that the direction made no odds...

Any chance of seeing a close-up of the 1509 controls from the '76 brochure? Wanted to confirm what actual colours the option buttons are supposed to be!!

Well done again - fantastic!

D

PS - have bought a HTPT spinner - no idea of the model number, but its the one based on the pre-interlock supermatic with the timer. It looks rough in the pic (the console text is totally gone - anyone got a spinner console hiding?) - will post details once i collect it, that is if the seller ever gets back to me!! Have to 'secretly' swap it for the Hoover spinarinse (gifted to wonderful Mathew in return for stashing the 1509, and the 9605 before it) before we move...

Hi David.

hope all is well and thanks for the kind words.

I hadnt noticed theat little gap for the hose to catch into, until you mentioned it.
Will have to try and fathom a new clip, as stopping the hose flap around all over the floor is a real help when it comes to moving them around.

I think I saw that Hotpoint spinner on ebay - its a period match for Richards 1504 toploader, as I am sure they werent carried on with the Liberators. Certainly never seen them in any Amethyst brochures.

Was at Mathews last weekend and caught a glimpse of your 1509/05, still in its wrapping. Couldnt fathom which it was to begin with! I am sure that once some magic has been worked on it, it will clean up lovely.

As for the buttons, the piccy is attached below. I think the button that became all white on the 1509/10 is a sort of Rose White on the 1509/05, as it seems to have a pinky hue to it.
Hope the brochure page helps.

Paul

Hi Rob and Twinkytwinny

Thanks for the kind words. You wait 25 years to see one and then they all decide to come out the woodwork over a couple of months. Mad eh.

Twinkytwinny - re the toploader - some major repair work has been carried out on the 1509/05 toploader and it is currently in the care of Chestermike. Just waiting for a convenient date for it to be delivered to me, then a thread will be produced telling the story of the other Stoke Damerel High School for Girls resident!

I just wait for the day when we can get a nice setting for them all, then I have my heart on recreating the 1976 Hotpoint brochure with all the machines. Just a bit of fun.

Cheers for commenting

Hi Lee.

Its circumstances unfortunately and yep, its getting painful.

There should be movement with it soon though as I showed my dad what needed doing with the kickstrip. He thinks getting a nice shade of oh so dark blue car paint (Citroen Midnight Blue paint Mike?) shouldnt be an issue.

Its a case of finding a weekend to deal with it now! Who knows - the paint job will require my mums car being moved out of the garage! Who knows what else might happen!!!

Brief update.

Halfords was visited on Saturday and a can of Peugeot Midnight Blue car spray paint was procured.

The cap shade looks a nice match and Mike has used a similar shade on his 1509/10 Liberator toploader, with superb results.

Fingers crossed it will look ok once in situ. Mind you, anything in a shade of dark blue/purple or even black would look better than the machines existing sickly brown kicktrip.
