Well, the weekend just gone saw a number of us gallivanting to different places across the UK, on a quest to collect newly purchased machines.

Lee successfully acquired the Hotpoint 1851/03 (yippeeeeeee), whilst Mathew and Mike headed down to Gary's, for a mass collection, the story of which I am sure will be told soon! hint hint!!! lol.

My planned machine collection has been postponed to this coming Saturday and, with Rob unwell, I took the opportunity to go visit my folks for the weekend.

The visit north coincided with an ebay auction ending, for a machine that Rob had drawn my attention to and I decided we should go for it.

It ended on Saturday afternoon and, with everything falling into place, I was able to arrange to collect and pay for the machine on the Sunday morning.

Sunday morning arrived and saw myself, my sister and her boyfriend (cheers for the use of your paypal-led account Mark!) drive to collect the new purchase. By 12 o' clock, we were all back home.

What can it be?
(Mike and Mathew arent allowed to tell. lol)

hi tub, 1400 W ... I bet it's that smurf aka Aquamatic :

A 1400 W heating element is too weak even for the italian market, Candy washers has ever had 1850-2000 W elements. So i bet it is the Aquamatic [UK version]

The Aquamatic version for the italian market has just a 1100 W element, but usually appliances for north european markets had powered elements (eg Zanussi DW that had 2800 W element vs 2000 W on the italian version)

Hi favorit.

Absolutely correct, for it is a Candy 0125 Aquamatic 1.

Here is Smurf gently lounging in the boot of my car...

The marks around the back panel opening is the remains of the sound insulating (rattle absorbing) foam, which has crumbled away.

Obviously there is some pitting rust too.

Will have to replace with some modern black foam tape...

'we updated you on every pasty bite & pit stop!!!'

You are avin a larff aint ya!

You both had me on tenter hooks all day, so much so that I had to pop pills to calm down.
I was waiting on a phone call - you never rang! I was waiting on e-mails - you never sent one! After two texts - SILENCE prevailed!

I then started rocking in a corner, whereupon my folks rang the doctor and two women in white coats (they were supposed to be MEN! grrrrrr) came and took me away for the night.

Then, to top it off, all the nurses at the hospital were WOMEN too!

I am not going to say about which one it is Mike, cause you are being mean. lol.

Oh go on then...

As I understand it, 'the item' is Candy's first Aquamatic and arrived in the UK in 1976.

Details of it can be found in the September 1976 copy of Which magazine, where it is described as the 'new' Candy Aquamatic.

It ran until 1980ish when it was replaced by the Aquamatic2 - anyone have a piccy of one of these?
The 2 looked like the later Aquamatic3, but was styled in dark blue and had rectangular buttons with semi-circle ends.

Then came the familiar Aquamatic3, that I wanted as a kid. Cute little thing...

Hi. the powder goes in the drum for prewash and the powder for main wash goes into compartment in top of door porthole, theres a water inlet in top of door boot and one in back of drum. The same method as used on Indesit Moon, but this probably works.Good find and looks to be in good shape for its age.Enjoy regards Nige.

Hi Eddy.

Here is a piccy of the drum as requested.

The Which magazine report states that the 'spinning effieciency' is 'very poor'!

Understandable really, bearing in mind its only a 400rpm machine with, as you mention, hardly any holes in the drum.

Wash performance is described as only 'fair'. Again understandable as the drum lifters are very shallow.

Anyways...

Hiya Nige.

Hope all is well.
Have you ever had dealings with these machines at all?

Agree that it does seem in good nik for its age. Just need to get a Bendix 7159 Compact to act as a comparison machine. A Candy Heliomatic dryer wouldnt go amiss either.

Aquamatic on the left - Heliomatic on the right.

Good thing I discovered about these machines is that the lid is reversable!

Originally the lid front was a wee bit manky and really needs a respray to get a suitable finish.

In the absence of skill and spray can, I simply put the lid back on the other way around with favourable results...

Another Smurf ( a Scandinavian one)

Great restoration ! Congrats Paul !! This is a case where "older is not better" : the Aquamatic 3 was a far better machine than the first model. Those fake baffles were a nightmare for "minimum iron" and "delicate loads" : the laundry just floated on the water without any rollover. Also in cotton cycles one had to run a full drum otherwise it performed that "float thing" instead of tumbling. It works better as an hamster wheel ;-)))))))

And now from ebay.it a ZannySmurf badged REX. Actually I guess is not Zanussi made but a true Electrolux, as that Asko-esque door without rubber boot screams "Scandinavia" ....

Congrats Paul, what a neat little washer! I was going to ask what year it is, but I actually read what you wrote about it and learned it's late 70's. SWEET!

The detergent powder chute is really something else, I have NEVER seen anything like that before! I am assuming when filling the water flows through the chute to dispense the detergent, yes? I'd love to see a video of how that works if you have the time.

I may have missed it in the text, but what is the capacity and do you know what RPM it spins at?

Thanks much and CONGRATS again!

Hi Paul, congrats on the micro candy,it has scrubbed up great. Is it up and running, have you done aload in it yet. I had the same machine when I was about 11. It never worked, it would fill, heat, pump and the timer went through the motions but alas the drum never turned. it was fun watching it fill from the top through the door and flush the 80's persil automatic out, I was very easily entertained lol, what with that and the Hotpoint princess I also had that didn't work apart from the wringer I don't know how I slept with all the excietment.

Hi Richard

The Candy is now in Crewe, but its been a manic weekend so we havent really had time to plug and play.

Suffice to say, it ran through programme 5 and 6 and all appears OK with it - fills half way up the door on rinses! lovely.

Next weekend will hopefully offer some video opportunities. Fingers crossed.

@ Kevin

It spins @ 400 rpm . The drum has a 25-27 cubic decimetres volume and a standard cotton load is just 3 Kg. As a clue : a single cotton load in the WP Duet/Dreamspace equates 3 or 4 loads of these Smurfs

IMHO the Electrolux one was better, as it span @ 800 rpm, although current Candy Aqua 1100 DFS spin up to 1100 rpm

current british Candy Aquamatic model

current Candy Aquamatic italian models

You can see in the italian pop-up how the current cylinder has real baffles unlike the vintage one
