Hi everyone. I though I would share the pictures I have collected over the years of Sanyo washing machines. Please note I don't own any of the machines, I just collected the pictures from various advertisements.

Also I don't know an awful lot about the designs and mechanisms, so if you want to share please do.

Enjoy.

This model was made by Sanyo for Malley's Australia and wore the Whirlpool badge. This one dates from the mid 70's.

Whirlpool by Sanyo

Hi Ash,
Do you happen to know if the Whirlpool by Sanyo was a pulsator style machine or an agitator type?.
Thanks
Steve.

Hi Steve. The Whirlpool has a pulsator and enamel tub. My Aunt had this machine for over 30 years. It just went on and on.

The link shows a Sanyo version which from my research I don't think was sold here. It is exceedingly beautiful IMHO.

Larger turbo matic, this one would of been about 59 cm wide x deep.

Handsome machine in my opinion.

Very handsome looking machine

twinniefan's profile picture
I agree with you Ash the Turbomatic is indeed a very handsome looking machine actually the two tone brown control panel reminds me of the Philips Gentle Care range which were around in the mid 1980's, I am pretty sure they were a similar brown colour and looked great,(and seeing as though they were in reality rebadged Hoovers they would have worked great too.).
The turbomatic pulsator reminds me of the F&P Aquasmart with it's almost half sized agitator.
Thanks for sharing these with us.
Regards.
Steve.

Here is my General electric badged Sanyo. It makes a great deal of noise upon spin. Bearings issues.

A fun little machine.

21.5 inches / 55cm wide and deep
32 & 35 inches tall (81cm & 89cm)

No more wire hangers!

Rear view.

GE had them build it with a cold --AND A HOT-- fill, unlike Japanese machines. Also has a water-temperature selection knob, and a water-level control.

Timer was "Americanized" for the standard three cycles(programmes): Normal, Permanent Ppess and Gentle.

The Japanese verison tens to have "Normal" (with two deep rinses). "Economy" (with one deep rinse) and a manual cycle of "Wash" or maybe "Soak" only.

The plug is huge and probbly the same type as one would find on 220v machines. I'm guessing intended to keep one's fingers away from the prongs.

One more money shot!

Don't know for sure that the porcelian tub was made just for GE. My thought was that the true Sanyos had a plastic interior tub.

GE COMPACT WASHER

These are fun little machines I have had many over the years and worked on hundreds of them for others. First these are not made by Sanyo they look similar, but the GEs and HPs sold in the US are Hitachi built nothing is interchangeable with Sanyo machines. The first GEs had porcelain inner and outer tubs, the second generation like you have Steve had a plastic outer tub and a porcelain inner tub and the last GEs had plastic inner & outer tubs.

Hi Toggleswitch,

Great to see your action shots of the GE but it is definately made by Hitachi. Got heaps of Hitachi pictures saved which I will post soon on a new thread for all to compare :)

Also, most of the Japanese brands used porcelain tubs in the 70's, it seems to be about 79/80 that they became plastic tubs. Despite their lightweight construction, these little machines really do seem to last forever!

Sanyo Jet action.

This machine is from the 90's I know but thought I would keep it in this thread. These machines were sold here till about 2000 then they disappeared from the Australian market.

6kg Sanyo. This machine was somewhat larger and didn't sell in the same quantities as the smaller machines.

Hope you have enjoyed all the Sanyos. I should post the pictures I have of Hitachi and National/Panasonic machines sometime soon.

i had a 70's Hitachi for a few years when last living out of home.

Was a great machine, bit 'tangle happy' but didn't miss a beat even tho it was old when i got it.

Video is below, there are also more videos of it at the link below.

Enjoy.

Sanyo and Hitachi

macboy91si's profile picture
I know Steve, I also thought these machines were Sanyo built, they look almost spot on. I still sometimes slip up and call them Sanyos even though I know they're Hitachi. Good machines, the one that you've got is a slightly newer model than mine which is the original version under the Hotpoint nameplate. Your machine is called the "Convertible" because of the hot water valve and temp selection and is the higher model. This series uses a more familiar GE style control panel with appropriate knobs. There is a lower model with only one fill valve and just a water level switch, which to me makes more sense for a portable like this. They made stacking kits for these and they could be connected stationary with the dryer overhead for cramped spaces, I have a portable Lady Kenmore washer that's like that, either mobile or like a baby full size. The blue impeller is a lot more aggresive than the 5-spoke black impeller of the previous model. The blue impeller machine is sort of something I'm on the look out for as I had a harvest gold set when I was a kid and I really liked it. Anyway great little machine, is that the one that you got from Martin?

-Tim
