I just couldn't let this one go to the crusher but I can't decide if I should keep it. What do you think? It's in mint shape.

Very neat find Eddy!! You should definitely hang onto it! How's the working condition?

Interesting mating of the Super Roto-Swirl and the "pregnant" Roto-Swirl cap...

but where will I put it?

eddy1210's profile picture
You guys aren't helping LOL!! I think I'll keep it for now. My first test found only 1 fault: it wouldn't spin. The problem: a loose wire to the spin solenoid on the wig wag. Problem fixed, it runs perfectly and quiet too. Makes you wonder how many people throw away good machines without even checking the obvious things first. I love the old style brake on this machine, takes way longer than 7 seconds to stop. This is definitely a low mileage machine.

Wow Eddy, that's cool, its a Simpson Sears Kenmore washer, I've never seen one before. It has a 1957 cap, with a 1964 Agitator, a 4 bottom row of holes wash basket on a control panel that looks like its from about 1967. Where did you find him?

Post# 81117 , Reply# 10   8/31/2005 at 22:41 (6,811 days old) by tlee618 ()

Hi Eddy, I say that it is a keeper for sure. Looks like it hasn't been used very hard either. Terry

where he was found

eddy1210's profile picture
Hi Robert, I found him out back of an appliance shop in the "off to the crusher" area, so I brought the poor thing home. Get aload of the sticker that's still on the front: Made in Canada.... and around the perimeter it reads: Keep Canadians Working! (And in french on the bottom). That 4 rows of bottom holes is a common find, like my '68 Inglis which has a very similar tub. Don't worry everyone, I will keep it for now.

It only spins at 525 rpm on a good day, a boring neutral drain that strains all the dirty water through the clothes like a drip coffeemaker and is difficult to service through a tiny opening in the back...throw it back!

Hee hee, that should get things riled up! It's in such nice condition, looks like they stopped using it when the spin solenoid wire broke - years ago. Have fun with it, Eddy and it's good to see you posting!

Greg's comments

Greg, you sound just like my Mom with your description of a Kenmore. She hated them and refused to allow one in our house because, and I quote, "Only an idiot would design a washer that drained all the dirty water back thru the clothes and only a bigger idiot would buy one." This statement was made with a Southern drawl. LOL.

Seriously, it's a nice machine and in my opinion is definitely a keeper.

Eddy,
Love it! Kinda like a stripped down Model 70 from the 67-69 era. It looks naked compared to the Model 70 I grew up with. Under the permanent press cycle does it say "Wash-N-Wear"? If it only says that, then it is an early model. Very, very cool. This your first Kenmore?

Thank you Cleantam

That's right. The D shaped opening does look like a smile. So comforting to have a washer that smiles at you every time you open the lid. And it sings to you while it's washing at that.

True happiness is owning a vintage Kenmore.

Don't think I share my mom's distaste for vintahe Kenmores. Quite the contrary. I loved watching the ones our neighbors had from late 50's to mid 60's and longed for one of my own.

Whirlpool & Canada?

drewz's profile picture
I have never seen a Kenmore without Sears stamped beside it, at least in the Sixties? What is it with Whirlpool in Canada?
Why is there Inglis and in the late sixties Whirlpool marketed "Victor" washers & dryers without the "RCA" name, but
these were Whirlpool machines or Inglis machines. Does anyone know why they do not use the Whirlpool name in Canada?
When did Whirlpool buy Inglis?

Bob and Les, behave you too. Bob you are right, it wouldn't be noticed unless its in the living room!

I could be wrong but I don't think Whirlpool ever owned Inglis, but Inglis used Whirlpool as a outsourcer to build their appliances.

Whirlpool owned or owns a minority share in Inglis which was all they were allowed under Canadian foreign ownership laws, FIRA. CGE (Cdn General Electric) was already a big player in Canada, operated as a seperate company arms length from the US Parent. Basically buying a share of Inglis allowed Whirpool access to the Canadian market without having to invest in new factories and Inglis more or less needed Whirpool to stand up against the merger of CGE and Moffat/GSW which then became known as CAMCO (Cdn Appliance Manufacaturers Corp)

eddy1210's profile picture
Yes, Peter this is a first and I kind of like it. It's bare bones but it's got a neat variety of cycles and all 5 temp combos. It has a Permanent Press- Wash n Wear cycle, it lists both on the dial! All right you guys, get the sledge hammers away from my new toy LOL. How come I can't find them as old as yours Greg?? Hmmmm. I must be a 60's child.

Simpson Sears?

Robert mentioned that it was a Simpson Sears, what does that mean. I have never heard of that term.

Simpson Sears

eddy1210's profile picture
In 1952 a joint company was formed in Canada. It was the Sears Roebuck Co from the US with the Robert Simpson Co in Canada. They opened a catalog based retail store which expanded to include department stores thereafter. They were simply known as Simpson Sears. Even today people still use the term, even though the companies split in 1978! The Simpson stores were purchased by the Hudson's Bay Trading Co and simply renamed "The Bay" which still exists to now. Of course, we still have Sears too which still produces catalogues from which we can still order from!

Eddy, thank you so much for the picture. Looking solely at that picture, it's almost like looking at the 1957 or 1958 Frog-eyed Kenmore friends in Dallas had. I loved that mchine. The only thing missing is the waterfall filter. Bob

Cool machine, Eddy! The “cool” or “cool down” portion of the Perm Press/Wash-N-Wear Cycle for machines of that era is my favorite of all time, and the spin does not have to work for that part of the cycle either.

Jaune, Consumer Reports also used to complain that the lid opens to one side, but does not lay flat. Only Frigidaire washers’ lids opened to one side and laid flat (nothing’s perfect, but Frigidaires were pretty close). I love Kenmores, too.

Great Pics! How about a close-up of the dial?

Jeff

Re: Flat Laying Lids:

Actually Jeff, there are a few other Washers that had Flat laying Lids, besides the Frigidaires. The Westinghouse Top-Load, M.Wards Signature, Hotpoint {1950s, 1960s and 1970s} at least, Norge "Borg-Warner" and "Fedders" and the newer 1930s and 1940s, etc Maytag Square Wringer Washers, with a Hinged Lid, if you want to get technical about Lids laying down flat.
