Did Macy's ever sell major appliances?  If so, what brand(s)?

I remember seeing Maytag laundry appliances in Macy's 34th St. store in 1976. Also Davison's in Atlanta, which was Macy owned, sold majors for a long time. They had at times, Westinghouse (we bought out 1965 tumbler there) Frigidaire, Hotpoint & Whirlpool (looked inside the big 33" combo at the downtown store). We looked at the WH portable dishwasher in 59 or 60 there. I remember the funny softener dispenser in the L-1000 Laundromat; you removed it and filled it then turned it upside down to place it back in the base of the control panel. They also got KitchenAid sometime in the 60s because they had the 15s on the floor, although in 59 or 60 when we were looking, Rich's had the KD2P on the floor. They also got Maytag in the 60s. I remember the portable dishwasher there and I bought my DE806 from Davison's in 1975.

I had no idea that Macy's carried so many different brands.  I just remember K-mart had Whirlpool, Sears had Kenmore, JCPenney had Hotpoint, and Jefferson/Wards carried Westinghouse.

Thanks for posting...

SUPRE-MACY

I remember that our first window air conditioner was a Supre-Macy Brand unit which was a 3/4 ton unit I got from my neighbor and ran so quietly that you could bearely hear it. It weighed a ton and had a frame that seemed to be made of at least 1/4" angle iron and a thick steel bottom pan. The date plate said it was a product or RH MACY AND CO.
It had to be over 10 years old when we got it in the late 60's and we had it for a good 10 years after that. We moved it from my parents' bedroom when they got their Carrier unit and installed it in the window in the unfinished basement to dry the damp basement out and man, you could see the floor dry up within an hour or two of it turning on and the water ran down the driveway like crazy. It sure helped dry the laundry on those sticky summer days before we got our first dryer.

I also remember a small am-fm portable radio of the same brand. Nothing special but still from Macy's.

Yes Macy's and Gimbels, and Caldor, and May's ....

All major New York area Dept. Stores, MACYS, GIMBELS, CALDOR, MAYS ALL HAD MAOR APPLIANCE DEPTS. They often would advertise sales in the New York Daily News.
I remember my mother looking at a Whirlpool washer in Gimbels after she bought a BOL Kenmore at Sears in the Bronx NYC. I used to work for Gimbels before they went out of business, and they were a big General Electric seller.

Many of the locally-based traditional department stores across the nation sold major appliances, predominantly up to the mid-80s. The San Francisco Macy's division phased them out c.1979. By 1986, the California traditional department store chains that had major appliances were Emporium-Capwell in the northern part of the state, Gottschalks (Whirlpool only) in the central, and May Company in the southern. Incidentally, the latter's main competitor, The Broadway had dropped them that year.

Yes Macy's had appliances.

My yiayia (grandmother) bought a Westinghouse 50's fridge from there that endured until the 90's. It was still working when it met the curb. (It had a hot-gas push-to -defrost button). Macy's also had, and still have, a furniture department.

I actually bought a 110v washer-dryer by "Comb-o-Matic" from neighboring Gimbels on 33rd Street in Manhattan. I believe it was a re-badged Ariston from Italy. And yes I did tinker with it to raise the water level!

The sales-woman was "family" as she outed herself to me and my partner. At first I, out of instinct, denied "being together" until I realized she was friendly and in the same boat. LOL

We bought a GE

Dishwasher at the herald square store in the mid 80's.

The Macy's that was near where I grew up on Long Island used to have an appliance section. It was on the basement level, and had all the major brands. However once the 1970s left us, so did the washers and dryers at Macy's.

Have a good one,
James

In the Southeast, the main department store I recall that sold white goods (other than Sears) was Service Merchandise. I recall their appliance section being extensive, but I don't know what brands they sold. For laundry appliances, my dad was Kenmore guy; we had a GE stove which might have come from Service although I don't know since it was bought before I was born.

Shillito-Rike's in Cincinnati/Dayton had major appliances until at least 1986...I remember going to their warehouse sale while I was in grad school. Shillito-Rike's (they were merged in 1984 or so) became Lazarus became Macy's, of course. During that period, I worked at LS Ayres in Cincinnati which did not have major appliances, but did have electronics (TV/Vacuum/Microwaves) as a leased department...I bought my first microwave there with my employee discount (a big ol' honkin Tappan...never since have I had a microwave that did bacon better).
