Hello, This is my first posting!

I was wondering what the quality is of an Amana washer from around 1990. I know that Raytheon sold off their laundry division in 1998 but when they were making both Amana and Speed Queen, were the machines pretty much identical?

I love Speed Queen machines and have been trying to find one but they rarely show up. I see Amana more often from that era. This is one I was considering buying---it looks like its from late 80's to early 90's. I know it's Amana but I'm not sure if the insides are as nice as a Speed Queen from that era.

Thanks for any information you could share on what differences there are between the Raytheon-built Amanas versus Speed Queens.

-Chris

for these types....watch out for them needing seal and bearring replacement......not the best choice.......you may have better luck, but these machines are prone to these problems

have you tried to check around for something like a consolidated laundry system that supplies washers/dryers to laundromats and the military...worth a shot....thats how I got mine for 25.00 a piece.....less than 5 years old...and they guaranteed them to work.....I bought several....

So since the Amana and SQ were both made by Raytheon in this era and the machines look damn near identical, what saves the SQ from suffering the same fate with the bad seal as the Amana. The Amana's are brought up about this from time to time, but nobody has really ever clarified whether or not the SQ machines from the era also share this defect. It would be good to know as I run across 80's/90's SQ's somewhat often.

Martin -

I thought of you and your SQ purchase about two weeks ago when as I was driving to lunch. I came up on a truck loaded with three sets of identical looking SQs. No telling if the guy was hauling them from somewhere as haul-aways or if they were going to new homes, but I figured they were from a similar situation as yours and thought maybe I'd see an N.J. plate on the truck, :-)

They looked nice and I thought that it would be hard to pass-up $25 machines like that which are guaranteed to work!

Your funny....NJ license plate....

so far I sold 2 of my sets...and ready to go get more again, you can make a decent profit from these......I sold my for 225.00 a set, theres other guys selling them for 300.00 to 400.00 a set......

next time I want to get the stacked dryers....they go for 50.00......I have 2 people who will pay me 200.00 If I can get these for them......

I make it worth the trip, I have the trailer which fits 10 appliances, and the toll across the bridge is 2 dollars more for this, plus the 1 1/2 hour ride one way.......so its not a bad little offer going on........helps pay for the machines and gas, and supports my appliance habit....not that anyone else has one of these!

but if you do see another truck with appliances, and New Jersey plates, HONK!.....It might just be me!......lol

and I do want to get back to this place to get some pics of their little museum of vintage appliances.......especially the turquoise coin-op GE filter flo.....
