I thought I had posted this brochure overhere sometime, but after searching the archives nothing came up. With all the scanning of brochures going on here I thought this would be a nice European contribution.

The compact toploader. No spin. This machine would do a prewash, main wash and six rinses automatically. After finishing the cycle the laundry would be transferred to a separate spin dryer.

Old Miele's

macboy91si's profile picture

I really dig these older Miele's utilitarian look. I also love the cabinets that they photograph them with. There was another old Miele brochure posted, I think from 1977 that had these wonderful lime-green cabinets. I love the was green and white with some orange/yellow buttons/trim look. It's one of the reasons that I think the avocado Frigidaire appliances of the 70's looked so nice, particularly the Skinny-Mini and the 24" machines, they had a contrasting white top on them.

Louis,

That is an interesting brochure. I see many items that I didn't know they ever existed, like the kitchen combinations. But where is the Combinette. Was it not available at that time?

The Combinette was not longer made I think. This picture is from 1963. Only later a newer model came out, but that was some years later. Miele didn't have a Combinette for a few years in the catalogue.

Water Use:

If those washers are anything like my W1070 which came along a bit later, there would have been four or five very high water level rinses. At least two or three before the washer even attempted to spin.

Early Miele front loaders (including mine) were in fear of suds locking, and since not all detergents were "no sudsing" or at least weren't by today's standards, the machines had to flush out as much of the detergent/froth as possible before spinning.

Persil "59" for instance contained chemicals designed to create froth (much like Tide), with a new low sudsing version not hitting the shelves until around the 1970's or so. Even then there probably would have been lots of old or similar products around.

Also these machines (again like mine), only had one or two spin speeds and a tachometer. Unlike the 1900 series washers, and those that came aferwards where spin speeds are controlled electronically. The later invention means the unit can slowly ramp up to full speed in order to prevent masses of froth (if required), from choking the pump. On the former type machines the motor will only slow down if a safety kicks in because too much foam is overwhelming the system.

As for the adverts in general, notice that unlike the USA, these housewives are shown in slacks, jumpers and flats; instead of dresses/skirts/blouses with or without pearls. On and there is nary a pinny (apron) to be seen.

Someone in the USA posted on their blog about finding one of those early Miele ironers. IIRC it was in Atlanta or some place down South. Apparently the difference in phase does not bother the thing, long as it gets 220v power. Like Ironrites here, there are plenty of those Miele ironers still chugging away all over Germany/EU.

Fabulous Louis, I love the embossed glass on the machines on pages 6 and 7.  Did you pick up this brochure as a kid?  I saved almost every one that I collected as a child from department stores and appliance dealers.

These machines were really built to last. You still see those older models with the top mounted controls around.

Launderess is right, all these machines had five high water level rinses. The first spin was after the third rinse. Most of them had only one spin speed, the 1000rpm one had two. The little toploader doesn't spin at all. To compensate that it had six rinses...

These are what you would call in the USA three motor machines. The pump has it's own motor and there are a motor for washing and a motor for spinning. I think there are videos on Youtube with older Mieles going into spin, you can hear the spin motor taking it over from the wash motor. I'm now at work, I will see later if I can find one.

No Robert, I didn't pick this up when I was a kid. I found it some years ago. I also have the 1975/76 brochure. I will see if I can post that brochure some other time. The front of the brochure shows the lime-green cabinets Tim was talking about.

Here's a video of a Miele De Luxe 421S doing a delicate cycle. It has a rapid advance timer. At 6:09 the dial is set on a short spin cycle, the timer rotates allmost fully.
