this is the most unique dishwasher i have ever bought. a spin tube frigidaire with a date of nov. 1st. 1963 stamped on the pump! what a nostalgic, historic, and tragic month nov. of 1963 was!

i bought this on e bay several weeks ago for about $129.00 and drove to and back from chicago yesterday to get it.

here are some pics.

the most unique thing about it

rollermatic's profile picture
is the absence of a spray arm on the bottom, replaced by the spin tube between the racks.

this area was dirty but later cleaned up very well. due to all the hoses and intakes coming in thru the back i was careful not to lay this one down on it's backside like i usually do.

this screen sets directly over

rollermatic's profile picture
the pump intake in bottom of tub. it is actually 2 screens and the top fine particle screen is sucked down on top of the course plastic screen during the washing phase.

it rises back up during the drain phases so food particlesd can escape down drain. pretty unique!

i remember reading from a member here that the spin tube was last made in 1964. this unit came out of a high rise in chaicago and the seller told me it was first built in 1966 so i am assuming this dishwasher was a left over spin tube.

i now wonder if any more spin tubes are still in that high rise apt. complex.

i am assuming the main pump seal

rollermatic's profile picture
is still good and dishwasher doesn't leak in this area. i am hoping all that leakage residue on pump housing was from that leaking pressure switch port. it did look that way.

seller said this dishwasher was not used much and it is frigidaire! this was definately a quality made machine. that's what i love about the frigidaire by general motors appliances from the 60's and 70's.

guess i'll find out when i water test it.

i am not going to take the pump

rollermatic's profile picture
and motor off the dishwasher at this time. i remember last year another member had the cast iron pump housing break when he was putting it back on the machine. i'm not going to push my luck here if i don't have to.

hopefully it will run fine and not leak. there are no new pump seals available anyway from what i have been told so even if it leaks around seal i can't fix it!

but i really don't think it will leak.

the color on this one

rollermatic's profile picture
is unique in that it's not harvest gold but a very light creamy yellow. maybe this led to harvest gold in later year appliances.

bottom panel is also unique in that no screws have to be removed to pop it off. you just lift up and it pops out.

rollermatic's profile picture
collecting dishwashers after last year but the uniqueness of the "spin tube" type of wash system i could not pass up! it was worth driving 14 hours yesterday for!

i've heard from members here that they were lousy machines as far as performance goes but i don't care. this machine is a big part of appliance history, to me at least and after trying it out a few times it will just be in the collection, not used to actually wash anything.

and this is one that i may put a peice of plexiglass on the front of so i can actually see the water action inside. it's gotta be fun to watch!

thanks for lookin, enjoy!

Peter, I'm glad you got this and saved it.  I'd forgotten you'd ended up with this.  I remember the posting about it.  the color is more of a Sunny Yellow I think.  Since it's just you, it will be fun to use it a couple of times.  Fortunately, this had a "short wash" setting on the dial and many people I know who had these, because everything was so rinsed off because they wouldn't clean, bypassed the regular cycle for that shorter one.  Thee werre bilt a lot better than successive Frigidaire dishwashers.  the builder of the building probably got a really good deal on the appliance package for that high-rise, with these included.  I'm sure many of these units wren't used a lot in that building.

Copious hot water and good detergent--with proper loading--and you'll be really surprised.

I had to redo all the cork seals on mine (just bought gasket material and cut my own), but everything turned out fine in the end.  When we first found it and brought it home, it looked great, and then Greg and I filled it with water, and it shot streams of pressurized water in all directions out the sides of the pump housing.

My impeller also had a crack in the middle where the motor shaft was being forced through the plastic.  (I JB Welded it, sanded it, and it never caused an issue.)

With a machine like that you could only wash dishes, there was any provision to wash pots and pans?

Would have, encrusted stuff come clean?

Gabriele, answering your two questions.  You had to load extremely carefully for any pots and pans and that took up valuable space sometimes.  also it dind't clean encrusted stuff that is for sure.  Main wash (first wash) was about 7 minutes long and if you owned a higher end model with 2 detergent cups, one covered, then the 2nd wash phas ewas about 5 minutes.

appreciate the comments and info.

well, so much for it not leaking, i just put some hot water in it and it leaks in about 4 places around the pump. have no idea exactly where, don't want to ruin the motor finding out.

so it's coming off, pump and motor. what do i have to lose. if it's just leaking around gaskets and not main pump seal i can fix it.

will post pics as i take it apart, may start tonite. any tid bits will be appreciated. and i know from paul not to over tighten anything!

mike don't worry about our bidding against each other, no big deal really. kinda funny actually! i just hope i can get it running.

again thanks to all for your comments, now the real work begins! how to try to fix it without destroying it!

Hang on a minute!

Pete, this model has an improved mounting system for the motor that you can't really overtighten. However, the screws tend to get rusty and need some help getting loose. I wouls spray some sort of rust-buster on them and let it sit overnight. I had to drill the screws out on mine so I replaced them with stainless steel screws. I have this model that was originally a Dishmobile but converted to a built-in.
The cork pump housing gasket tends to dry out. I have replaced mine with more modern gasket materials. I think " Frigidaire = GM" so I often look at auto parts stores for stuff like that. SteveD

1964 model

If you notice the drain valve says Dec 1963. The DUF model was made for 2 years 1963 and 1964. When the 64's came out they did introduce a "H" model Deluxe Dishmobile DW-DMH. The only difference from the DW-DMF was the wider chrome handle and the newer cabinet assembly without any visable screws. The Unicouple was on the top rather than the back.
But there was never a DW-DUH model.

making a new gasket for the plastic half of the pump. scraping the old cork off should be easy. i just hope i can find a big enough peice of gasket material to use. gonna hit the auto parts stores first.

i really think after seeing how good the pump seal looks that with new gaskets it won't leak anymore. i feel much more optimistic about it than i was before i tore it apart tonite!

thanks again for all the advice and comments! this spin tube is turning into a fun project!

gasket

I replaced the cork with a strip of 3/4" closed cell foam weatherstripping.
I applied it adhesive side down, starting at one of the mounting holes. Then I trimmed it at an angle from the adhesive out. I outlined the pump plate all around, then overlapped it at the angled cut. At that point the adhseive side sticks to the starting point. Finally, I trimmed it so it would all be the same thickness. Not one drop since! When I tried to use rubber it seemed to leak no matter what I tried. Be sure to "punch" the holes out carefully. I just used a nounting bolt and tapped it with a hammer lightly.
Please excuse my rough drawing but hopefully it makes it clearer.

Love to have one of these, they did a pretty good job, were especially good with crystal etc, my cousin had one when I was a kid, a 61 Custom Imperial,he bought a new Kitchen Aid in the early 90s and had it hauled off, If I had any idea he was going to do that I would have had it, it looked and worked like new, his new wife hated it and wanted one she could put pots in!

little metal square piece in post #501383

Referring to the metal piece in the back of the tub was over the water inlet. If the water pressure was too high, the water fill would reach the front of the tub and rinse the detergent away in the pre-flush cycle. This tab prevented that. A simple non-mechanical fix that worked! Especially when there was only one wash with detergent.

Smart woman.  She knew a DISH washer when she frustratingly tried to use it. I cannot tell you how many times I either saw, or I heard my parents' friends complain about their Frigidaire and KitchenAid dishwashers because they ended up being run half full a lot in suberbia.  When the top rack was full of glasses, the bottom was pretty empty lots of times, but they turned on the machine because you couldn't put any more glasses in because you couldn't put them in the bottom rack.

Magic Chef Spin Tube

My folks built a new house in the late 1960s complete with Magic Chef appliances including a spin tube dishwasher (our neighbor had a Frigidaire job similar to the one pictured above). Complete with pilot light and rotating dial, there was no doubt when the Magic Beast was in operation and my mother did not use it if a conversation was to be had within less than a mile. It rusted through rapidly and was replaced with a Frigidare (sans spin tube). Thanks for the pics of the Frigidaire.

I love my Older KitchenAids. I love the looks, the reputation, the durability, and the Sound of them running.

But, I am thinking about parting with one or two just because of the "One Arm Wonder" thing. It kills me I can't "BobLoad" them. I have them for nostalgic reasons. Other than that, I'll take a Older Double arm machine anyday. I only wish KitchenAid would have developed the KDS 18 Spray System back when they changed to the HydroSweep System in the Mid 60s. I love my 18. The Double Wash Arms and the Constant Rinse is the best cleaning system I think still to date.

i know most people love the

rollermatic's profile picture
18's and that double spray arm but i am hopelessly infatuated with the single arm hydrosweep that came along with the 15, 16,and 17's!

it just never failed to amaze me that the one hydrosweep could deliver all that washing power! especially in the 15's before they toned down the pump presure a bit. i have a kds-18 but my heart belongs to the earlier models.

but hey, who am i to say they are better or not! it's all nostalgia for me anyway!

on a different note i bought pump gasket material today at advance auto parts, it's a cork material. and new stainless steel bolts at home depot. hope to have the pump on this spin tube back together for a water test in a day or so here. will post a few pics whan i do.

thanks for all the latest comments and "steved" i love that ad for the dw-duf which is the model i just got. if it doesn't clean that well it's ok, i just want to get it leak proof and run it for the fun of it.

Congratulations, Pete! Looks like a fine machine!! Thanks also for all the pictures - you have given me some insight as to how I may be able to adapt a 1963 model pump to a 1958 machine that I have been working on for oh, about a year now...
The colour is pretty cool too - like a pastel yellow.
Have fun with it!!

listen, do you know if any pump seals are out there anywhere in case i ever need one? or maybe it's some kind of standard size that a seal co. may be able to match?
gonna give larry a call here in parma. also that other guy who put a note on this site recently about having old appliance parts. if i find out he has any pump housings i will tell you for sure! i know you need one.

That filter flappin' up and down is amazing. I was talking to John about it, and he's been very impressed with it. You know GM used to have a little jingle at the end of their ads. I can still hear it. "GM....Doo-ding....mark of excellence."

For me the spin tube would be a delight to experience. So unusual and sooooo Frigidaire just like the pulsator.

Can't wait till you plexiglass her up and put on the show. Interesting that John said he had dinner at Robert's before the glass-front KD replaced his spin tube Frigi, and that they really packed it with very dirty dishes which came out spotless. Like the washers, the trick is in the, for stellar performance.

i made a new round gasket

for the main hub seal. actually i made two. i'll explain the reasons for this later in the post. it's mainly to increase height i will say now.

all new stainless

rollermatic's profile picture
steel bolts from home depot.

i always try to use stainless whenever i'm dealing with a pump or anything else
that is around water and moisture on a washer or dishwasher. they are not expensive and easily found and you never have to worry about rust!

cleaned up the impeller

rollermatic's profile picture
and especially the seal. used alcohol and a eye glass wiping cloth on the seal carbon surface, then applied just a tad of 3 in 1 motor oil. cleaned the brass mating surface as well and installed impeller back on motor shaft.

cleaned the outer cast iron gasket mating surface with sand paper and then wiped with wd 40. it was nice and smooth when i got it done.

interesting

rollermatic's profile picture
how they clamped the hose to the top spray apparatus. they simply twisted a wire
and made a clamp of it. no zip ties back in 1963!

here's the motor back in place

rollermatic's profile picture
now, the reason i added two cork gaskets to the main hub was to increase the height about 1/8 inch.

as you can see in the red circle there is a cast iron prong that will keep you from overtightening the 3 bolts that hold the motor/pump to the tub.

the machine had been leaking in this area around the main pump gasket. i also noticed that without the extra height of the 2 cork gaskets the 3 prongs would touch the pump housing before i even started tightening the 3 hold down bolts.
i figured maybe the main rubber gasket had compressed with age.

with the 2 cork gaskets added i had room to tighten those bolts and give a snug seal. it worked!

tested with half tub of water, no leaks!!!!!!!!!!!!

tested with a full tub of water, no leaks at all from motor pump area!!!!!!!!

but i do have a minor leak from the back where the main hose connects to the
plastic port for the spin tube.

but as for the pump itself, it's LEAK FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

all in all

rollermatic's profile picture
it's a complete success!!! it was worth driving to chicago for this beautiful old classic dishwasher!

and my work today has paid off as well! it runs great, it doesn't leak anywhere important, and it sounds like a lot of water is being thrown around inside. later on i'm actually gonna run a load of dishes in it after i replace those 2 clamps!

will post a couple pics tonite when i do.

and this one i'm gonna get plexiglass for the front sometime here in the near future. really want to see the water action inside. will film it when i do.

after a long winter of not doing anything on my appliances this is just what i needed to get back in the groove!

next on the list, the speed queen solid tub washer i picked up in indianapolis last october.

thanks again for the nice comments and support!

Spit shine

Instead of detergent, run it with a package of Lemonade Kool-Aid - the orignial kind (without any sugar). All those dark hard water stains should go away. Even if you have to do it twice. Or stop it before the water drains and reset the dial to repeat the wash.
It's a cheap cleanup that's non-toxic!

it has a gasket on both sides of the tub wall.

both were brittle and cracked and it was leaking in this area.

holder that bolts thru the back wall into the hose assembly shown above.

it supports the spin tube and holds it in place.

i cut a new gasket for it out of the leftover cork material i had from the pump gasket. again i bought this at the auto parts store for 5 bucks.

a couple days ago it

rollermatic's profile picture
also had a small leak on top around this inlet for the top sprayer but tonite it is not leaking in this area. maybe that top gasket just needed to get moistened up again and pliable after years of non use.

i did tighten up the wire twistie a tad with pliers, that may have helped also. but i really think it was leaking around that gasket too. oh well, no leaks now!

it's a lot of fun to

rollermatic's profile picture
run it and listen to it! it has a very quiet whooshing sound and very distictive drain solonoid sound.

the spin tube itself seems to fly around it's post when i open the door and peek at it.

timer escapement increments are one minute each. it has an 8 minute first wash and a 4 minute final rinse. i'm gonna time a complete cycle here in the next day or so.

it has several water purges where the water enters tub while drain solnoid and motor are on.

rinses seem to be about one minute except for final rinse.

Post# 504429 , Reply# 114   3/15/2011 at 23:51 (4,761 days old) by rollermatic (cincinnati)
but it is a pain to load!

rollermatic's profile picture
anything like a pan or bowl has to go in the top rack to be hit by the spray! all you can put in bottom rack are pl;ates and saucers or other flat surface dishes!

this would not be a machine i could ever use on a daily basis as most of my stuff is bowls, pans, cups etc. i ran out of room really quick in that top rack.

but i will say thateverything came out clean.

regardless, it's the most unique dishwasher i have ever had with that spray tube substituting for a bottom spray arm. this machine and the old style impeller machines make up a very important part of dishwasher history!

i'm very glad i was able to get it and am very glad i was able to fix it up with no leaks! and as said it is a lot of fun to play with!!!

Peter, there is a awy to put some stuff in the bottom rack so that bowls and pans get hit by the spray. See Dishwashercrazy's 1955/1956 manual for some ideas for that.  As to how good it cleans in that position is a guess on my part.  But you're right, it's not a machine for people like us and a daily driver.  A PITA big time.
