We're back, the beast is in the basement. Here it is the second one known left in the world now, the other of course is Greg's beautiful 1956 model.

It has some surface rust that seems to scrub off, its intact and everything seems loose and free, even the pump which I was surprised about. More to come...

WOW...EXCELLENT WORK!!! I've never seen pictures of a Wash-N-Dry Laundromat in this style before! Is the interior identical to Greg's, complete with lots of Smackulation?

Really she's not in that bad of shape for being 48 years old! I know Jon will want you to ship her to Boston to live there...;-)

Did you know about it, or did you just go down to the basement, and there it was? I bet you could not believe your eyes!
This is amazing! And it is vented!
Can't wait to see more pictures, and the required interior shot! :)
I am so excited for you!

I'm still amazed, and the book too! The other vintage laundry products you found are great, the Ivory flakes is too cute!

With that blazing 181 RPM spin in the Westy combo, you might want to send for this extraction improvement accessory...

Thanks everyone! Well actually we walked into the kitchen of the house and I found a shoe box full of old recipie booklets. Usually I go through these because on occasion I find old owners manuals. Sure enough I found the manual to the combo, I said to Gary look at what they used to have in this house thinking for sure the machine would be long gone. I have found many vintage washer manuals like that and the machines have always been gone. But this time we go down into the basement and there it is back by the furnace room covered in krap-ola. There was a early 90's direct-drive whirlpool washer and dryer over in the laundry area.

Now that we are home from the movies I have time for a few more pictures. Darrel my 10th anniversary of washer collecting will be next month.

How did you find this washer machine....I think it's treasure of some front load washer combination...sure?

Ummm...is that right about one direction (right rotation) and how pounds of the drum cylinder and spin rpm?

Oh Robert!
This is so exciting!
I can't get over it!
I thought that you might have gotten a call or something about there being this old front loader.
This was really a walk in and find!
The drum in this machine is like new! Was it an estate sale where no family member could give you some idea of what the history was on this beautiful machine?
I am so happy that you found this beautiful machine!
Do tell us about your evening of playing with it, and what you found out!
This is so exciting.
Thanks for the pictures.

I am so happy for you Robert, I too would have loved to have seen the expression on yours and Gary's faces when you saw it sitting off by the furnace room! Looks like the drum is in good shape. Can't wait for you to try it out. Just wondering if yours has a serial plate on it. Greg's didn't, it had been removed. We are thinking that during the recall the dealer just removed the plate and told the people to keep it as they didn't want to haul it out of the basement. The machine does have a very low spin speed but it sure has a lot of wonderful washing action. It is so hard to believe that two of these machines have now been found in less than 5 months. It does give us hope for what is still out there waiting to be discovered and saved! Thanks so much for sharing Robert!! Terry

Robert,

...along with the other requests for pics, where you found it and the like, would you be so kind as to email me your home address? Also, please include any bypass codes if you have a burglar alarm. Let me apologize in advance for the damage to your beautiful lawn. It'll tear me up to destroy your landscaping when backing the truck up to the door to steal this Westy off of you. (No apologies for tearing off the awnings though...) I hope you will accept my generous offer of waiving liability payment from your homeowners policy if I were to hurt myself getting this work of art out of your house and into the truck. Because I am so gracious, I will also give you 30 days to compensate me for the cost of renting the truck, appliance dolly, moving pads, and gasoline. Reimbursement for lodging during the trip will not be needed, but your unspoken offer to do so is appreciated -- I plan to drive straight through upon reciept of your home address. I'll extend my generosity further by doing the mapquest work myself, but I simply must stop at that point. Given that I have no room in the apartment for this, I'll be forced to remove the dining room table, chairs, and china cabinet. Just remember who your friends are, Robert, not everyone in Applianceville will make this kind of sacrifice for you! And for your relationship -- didn't you say on another thread Neal would make funny noises if you purchased another machine?

Not buying it, eh? Hell, it was worth a try! Congrats, and I sincerely mean that! And hey, I certainly wouldn't want you to be single, being as happy as you seem to be -- If I had a partner, the acquisition of such a prize would have me humming the closing number of the Carol Burnett show for weeks...

I'm so glad we had this time....together. Just to have a laugh or sing a songgggg. Seems we just get started and before we knew it....came the time we had to say, so long!

I can think of no better hands for this appliance to fall into than yours! I love the work you folks do on these vintage machines, and the machines themselves. But these combo's are beyond awesome in my book. I guess it's the gadgetry, multipurpose gene in me. I beg you to post restoration progress pics -- hell, strip every pic I've ever uploaded, delete my messages, my profile -- kick me out of Applianceville, I'll happily lurk to see your work on this one! I fell in long distance love when Greg's was unveiled at Convention. Be glad I didn't attend, I'd have made a scene, I just know it -- after all, it's Westinghouse, I can be sure!

John

Theft and property damage

Guess what, John... I know Robert's address, and exactly how to get there.

Robert, would this be worth it to you? Here's the deal. All you have to do is let me have your turquoise '58 Unimatic pair, and then, in return, I'll agree to not give John your address, and spare you the theft and property damage.

John, maybe we should meet sometime, since we live in the same city. You seem to have a devilish sense of humor.

Another idea

Come to think of it, Robert, instead of the turquoise '58 Unimatic pair, you could also substitute either Gladys or (dreamy sigh)... Neal.

But either way, don't be dilatory in resolving this blackmail because the longer you wait, the closer I'm getting to e-mailing John with that address. I might even offer to help him drive it straight through.

LOL!

Anyway, here is the deal with the new Wash 'N Dry Combo. The timers, heater, motor, pump all work just fine. The problem with the machine is it wont spin. So this is going to be a major project that I really don't want to take on right now and I'm not really a combo person anyway. So I spoke to John in Washington and he has a spare transmission, motor and pump for this machine. Since this is one of his absolute dream machines and he has the parts to restore it, its going to go to the museum in Washington where it can cherished by John and Tom and Robert Stokes, etc. Another fabulous rare machine saved and to be enjoyed by all.

But I did scan the owners manual for everyone to enjoy and added it to our club Owners Manual Library. Click on the link and scroll down to the very last manual on the list...

Wow, the interior looks MINT! These definitely have some capacity, IMHO; I was amazed at how much Greg's could hold--rivals even the largest of modern FL's! Of course you couldn't dry an 18 lb. load but you could definitely wash it!

Interesting about the spin problem...considering the amount of water it removes you won't need it anyway! ;-)

On a more serious note, how is the spin controlled in these Westinghouse combos?

Hey Steve...

The hell with waiting...gimme that address and we'll nab the turquoise for you. Come along if you like, we can take turns driving...don't let me forget to snag the Glasbak mugs on the way to the gold mine downstairs. Since we're there, might as well make a sweep of the place.

My email addy is in my profile...with just a click of the mouse and a wee tad of information, the 58 Unimatics are yours!

We need to move fast -- I live in the Shaw neighborhood in South St. Louis -- and can rustle up da boyz from da hood for muscle to load 'em up in the truck. We wait too long, and our drive time increases exponentially. He's already yapping about sending that babe off to foster care in Washington. To hell with everyone else, that machine exists for my enjoyment only! This is ALL about me! Not a combo man he says -- well duh, those awnings scream that to the entire neighborhood!

1 Address + 1 Mouse Click = Two perfect Unimatics for Steve. It's really *that* easy.

On a sidenote Steve, I don't understand what you mean about my humor? What humor? Christfr/Chris from St. Louis has met me, and can vouch for my dourness. I'm serious. I've already printed the pic of his house, I'll just hit every fairie prarie in Minneapolis -- someone's gonna recognize those awnings...

My father was in the Marine Corps during World War II -- decorated for valor and distinguished service in the Battle of Midway -- I have his honors in my safe deposit box. My mother was a union organizer for the Teamsters in the mid to late 1940's. My sister, doing geneological research on our parents discovered our mother was blacklisted as a Communist. My sister has a picture of our mother and Jimmy Hoffa speaking jointly from a lectern at a Labor rally.

Let me sum it up for you: A father distinguished in a key battle of democracy versus tyranny, a mother, branded as a communist standing next to a labor executive who went *POOF* -- and I was their little bundle of joy!

I want that Westy. The address, please.

Thank you.

:-)

John

How do you know it's not spinning, I mean that rapid 181 rpm spin, it almost looks like it's tumbling. Are you sure you're not getting senile in your old collector age? (runs and ducks for cover very pdq).

Westinghouse named their combo Wash'n Dry Laundromat. In the late 60s, maybe trying to escape from the near universal curse on the combos, Sears changed the name on their washer-dryer combinations as you can see on Jon's 1969 Lady Kenmore Combination Wash'n Dryer.

A sad note: Westinghouse finally offered to give the service technicians at the Georgia Power Company a Wash'n Dry Laundromat for use in their home, FREE, if they just kept it repaired and running. They all turned it down. I was told that by one of the techs. I am not sure if maybe a small number of techs might have accepted, but he let me know that they went through hell working on those machines. Those techs had to know by the time they completed training on these combos how poorly they extracted. They also could see that there was no cold water setting, even for rinses (CU rated the GE and WH combos the two machines offering the fewest options to the user). They probably also hated all of the screws around the big round access hole in the back of the cabinet that they would have to deal with every time they had to go inside one of these machines, and that's when they were new. Once they were in use and the service techs encountered the leaks caused by the action of the intense heat from the dryer heaters on the rubber seal to the heater box and the water that got in and started the heater box to rust out, they had to deal with the reality that there was no silicone rubber at the time to survive the intense heat of every 1.5 to 2 hour drying cycle. Many of these techs, indeed most GAPOCO employees had Westinghouse Laundry equipment in their homes and could see the difference in performance and time between service calls for the washers, dryers and combos.

I read somewhere that a definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. That is sort of what the combo makers (except Bendix)were doing. They offered machines that did not extract well and took greater amounts of resources than separate washers and dryers to wash and dry a load of laundry and yet they kept trying to sell them. There were certain laws of physics that could not be overcome after Bendix tied up the patents, but they tried to sell these very flawed machines anyway. I'm not saying that they were not fascinating; they are, but they are not monuments to industrial success.

Mike, Anderson Cooper is an evening news anchorman on CNN. The picture above doesn't even do him full justice, he's just adorable.

Tom, on this combo luckily there doesn't seem to be any sign of water leakage into the heater box at all. The rubber seal on the flapper is in good shape yet and I adjusted the spring tension to make it hold even tighter. Its so nice to read your posts again, you have so much wonderful knowledge to share, to say you were missed is an understatment.

Jon, you are going to get a big ker-knock over you head with one of those big red pumps if you keep it up mister!

Veg behave, your making me blush.

Hi Terry I keep forgetting to mention that there was no history with this particular machine as the estate sale company runs the sale and the family isn't there for it.

Robert, there's no need to whack Jon with YOUR pumps...Jon has a pair of pumps in black of his OWN. I've seen them, they do exist. They're huge!

Mike, those cycles are quite appropriate, I hadn't thought about it but Ohhhh, Anderson Cooper! Falling for a news anchor, I've become my grandmother! Discussions of his sexuality "below the radar" make the fantasy so much more real, it's difficult not to let your mind wander a bit amidst the chaos and tragedy...

Andersen Cooper

Is the son of Gary Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt (yes, that Gloria Vanderbilt). Adorable he is and rumoured to be a very nice person.

His famous (or infamous) mother having suffered many heart aches and set backs in life suffered a huge blow when her son Carter (Andersen's brother) committed suicide several years ago, by jumping out of a Manhattan apartment window. Ms. Vanderbilt also suffered a huge reversal of fortune when a dodgy accountant pretty much cleaned her out,IIRC bad investments/not paying taxes and outright theft came into play. Last one heard Ms. Vanderbilt was living with her son, Andersen, though maybe now he can possibly afford two homes.

And, hell, Gloria used to make great clothing!

We're off the subject again. Robert, the suspense is killing me. (And, we're eating up more bandwidth again)

Andersen Cooper's father was not Gary Cooper. His father was writer Wyatt Cooper.
I work for Time Warner, and have met Anderson Cooper. Very nice person.

Gary Cooper was a bit before my time. *LOL*

Only knew so much about Miss.Vanderbilt because of her "fame" and the fact the Vanderbilt family has their crypt in the same cemetary as our family. In fact members of my family were there the same day young Carter Copper was laid to rest, tending various family plots.

Strange thing about Andersen Cooper is that unless one knows him well or his family, not many know he is a "Vanderbilt". Though there are poor and rich Vanderbilts, and probably many of both sides work than in Gloria Vanderbilt's mother's day; it seems Mr. Cooper truly worked up by his boot straps.
