2 dials

One of the two dials was the timer.  The otgher one looks like it was something to do with options modification such aws maybe all cold water wash, auto settings, or cold rinse.  The buttons on the left are programmed for specific fabric/load types.

Isn't the date on the magazine "10-4-64?"

From Left to Right the panel is as follows:

Program Selector / Water Saver / Water Temp / Timer

The Temperature dial next to the timer is indeed what Bob thought it was - a modifier for the automatic temperature settings that were preset by the fabric or cycle buttons on the left side. Cold Water wash & Rinse, (all) Cold Rinses and the center was where the dial was left for automatic settings as determined by the fabric selector buttons.
