Hi All , i have a lead on a set of Westinghouse Laundromat washers in Kanawha City West veriginia (pics attached) If anyone in the area or who wants to travel let me know and i can forward you the email info for the seller, she is looking for 150 u.s for the pair..... As you can see they are in need of restoration.

She's looking for $150 for the pair. I would say she got her glasses at the Helen Keller eye center. People let stuff sit around and go to hell and then want big bucks for it. She would have to pay that much to have a scrap dealer haul them out of the hole they are in. Both look like the condensate water from the still has leaked on them for years.

I've also noticed prices on ebay are out of sight, no pun intended. Are people that poverty-stricken that they think someone with money and probably brains is gonna pay those prices?

The side swing door model looks similar to the one we had, but ours had 4 water temp settings. This might have been a year older, before cold/cold was offered.

Tom might have worded his reply differently, but I basically agree with what he said. Westinghouse parts are extremely difficult to find, not like Maytag, Whirlpool, or GE, for example.


They are interesting machines, however.

Tom's just telling it like it is, and that is something he's very good at.

 

I agree with his position, and he has sized up the situation well with his Lazarus reference.  I don't think the seller will be seeing $150 U.S. any time soon.

 

Thanks for posting them, however.  Someone here could very well be interested in one or both of them, but only after a drastic price reduction, I'm afraid.

 I'd be willing to pay 50 dollars for the slant-front washer and shipping, thats how much a recent slant-front dryer was going for (in much much better shape) in Canada. So whatta ya say?

I am sorry if I was too harsh. We all know that Westinghouse used a thin coat of paint that did not stand up to much abuse. It is, however, one thing to retire a machine to a corner of a dry basement and cover it with something that will protect the machine from dirt and scratches and prevent water from coming in direct contact with the finish and the neglect these obviously suffered. There seems to me to be a great disparity between how these machines were treated and the resale value placed on them by the seller. You have to wonder at the condition of the innards also. We have watched what Paul has gone through with his Laundromat. It's a shame that these are in such woeful condition. When I saw the picture of the slant front, I felt the same shock as when they took the sledge hammer to the Frigidaire washer in My Beautiful Launderette. John can corroborate how the audience looked back when we gasped.

For 75 bucks per washer any replacement part can often cost more than what that washer cost you. The Temperature button selector on the lower left of the 1960's bottom unit went for 85 on ebay last summer. The timers vary from 30's to 120's. Repair clinic had some new ones 10 years ago in the 130 buck range. Boots for the lower unit go for 35 to 75 on ebay as NOS.

If the lady does not know what they will go for; starting high and later dropping the price shows she is very shrewd.

The porclean fired "tub front" that seals the tub on the lower washer sells for 157 bucks new; twice the price of the washer itself. This piece has the oval hole that connects to the rubber boot.

A picture by itself gives little clues on the inner condition, one can have worn out shafts, leaky bearing seals, an oval pulley with loose rivets, a timer that sticks.

The bottom line.....

 The bottom line is that , like MAYTAGBEAR said it best, parts are hard to find and i know personally someone who paid 100 just for a motor and another 65 for the spin engaging solenod, so right there in parts is more than the lady is asking for the pair.... When i put for restoration i meant that would be upto the buyer to decide to go to that extent or to use them for parts...... This petucular part of this site is dedicated to vintage machines and i figured there was someone out there who might want these for parts or whatever, since the old westys seem to have quite a following with the vintage collectors..... In the future i think i will refrain from posting such leads on this site.....

Duuuuude,

 As members of this community, its our responsiblity to always post leads. He was just disappointed by the way the machines were stored. Keep posting leads, everyone here truly appreciates it!!!

 Thanks alabamboy, but sometimes people should keep there negativity to themselves. I Know a few guys on here who are interested and as 3beltwesty said the parts alone are worth it...... I Have seen basket cases worse than this sell for more.... If they were easy to find and parts were plentyfull then these would not be worth much.... Having said that, in relation to the "Kept Condition" i don't know of many people that cover their washer and dryer after use or even when storing them.... I Think people just trash or sell them.... for 50 -60 year old machines im suprized these are even still sitting around at all.... But thats what makes this hobby so much fun "The Hunt" ..... Im sure someone will be buying these and using them for parts or restoring them....

If they were close to me i would have grabbed them.....

So as a side note; what price would be "OK" to folks on this board per machine if 75 dollars is considered so bloody high?

ie NOT a total ripoff, obscene, outlandish?

The lower washers bottom service panel having some rust spots is not really odd for a 45 year old machine.

As far as prices,

a new old stock GE motor I got at repair clinic was 128 bucks about 10 years ago.

As already mentioned the tub front is 157 bucks new, if any are still left.

The spinner shaft goes for 84 bucks new,

the ball bearings and seal about 45.

The potato pulley with slinky spring about 130 bucks

Without trying out the machines, you might be buying a total absolute mess or one that really has minor issues. The outer condition really is just a rough clue.

Here Our 1947 westy was used until 1976; then scrapped when we got our 1976 westy. The tub front on the old 1947 machine had some pinholes, the machine still worked but really needed a cooking tin to catch the water drips. We could not find a new tub front for the old machine, this was pre internet and when not all parts places had toll free numbers.

One of these old machines for sale might have a dripping/leaking tub front after 30 to 40 years usage; and finding one might be an issue. Thus you might have to weld up the patchess; or use underwater bondo and marine paints, etc.

Here in the deep south by just covering the device it is really a mixed bag.

The cover keeps dust and dirt away and fading light away; but often one gets more damage since water condenses and thus one gets rust since little air circulates.

ie if uncovered dew evaporates way quicker.

When up north we tended to always cover and wrap stuff to be stored, now in the south I have found that many times not covering is better in some a cases. If those washers are stored in a county barn, mice and rats will chew on the wires; rubber parts. Plus they will deposit shiny items they want to store there, ie reloading brass, those parts you thought you lost from a carb rebuild, even sockets for wrenches.

Many times here an old stored appliance really in humid areas just needs it to be wiped down with windex and left uncovered; or if covered CHECKED once a year; before rusting starts and advances. Where I am one has salt water too.

 These are less than 10 miles from me, but not in a condition that I could restore from....pity, would be a great way to start my collection again. (got rid of my vintage Maytag when I bought the Speed Queen to replace the '97 Maytag. all I have now is a Maytag wringer washer, circa 1940 and my daily drivers)

Shutting Down...

Hopefully no one will take offense to what I have to say, but just in case I apologize in advance.

Last year I posted a Westinghouse FL washer motor complete with the potato pulley, pump and the spring.  It worked and was FREE, all you had to do is just pay for shipping.  No one here wanted it.    I've posted machines here too, again no one here wanted them bad enough to come get them.  Oh sure, people wanted me to cannibalize a perfectly running machine for a part, It doesn't work that way.  Leads to machines posted here, I've gotten burned several times.  The last one I ended up in fight a with 2 new members.  I feel my energy is wasted and my efforts in vain, thus I don't post leads here anymore, or machines.  The leads I keep to myself now, the machines I have to get rid of, I just send to scrap now.  The general public does not care about vintage machines, only we do.  If people here don't want the machines that I find, or have to place in homes, What is the point in me posting them? At this point I've lost the will to post machines that need rescuing. Seriously!    This is the result of me having been backed into a dark corner.

Still haven't heard

 Well I still haven't heard back from the seller. I'm very interested in the slant-front, I'm dying to put together a laundromat twin set. Just in case I don't hear back, anyone here have any leads on a pair or a bendix duomatic? Very interested in vintage front loaders.

 I hope everyone here will continue to post machines that they have or see somewhere.I am eternally grateful to those who post machines here as I wouldnt have much of a chance to find all the machines I am looking for otherwise. Even though I am in the appliance field I dont see very many vintage machines.I found both my bolt down Bendix and rollermatic Frigidaire here which is presently on its way here from Florida.
