An entire kitchen of vintage GE appliances including a wall fridge! I've already emailed the seller asking if he'd sell the washer/dryer combo alone.

"Restored the refrigerator sells for $5000."

The question is, "is this one restored." Why reference a price for what you are not offering?

Amazing that the dishwasher is still there. That was a whole lotta years to live with a GE combo. Do you guess it was a slab home with the boiler in the kitchen like that?

Well he said he'd be willing to sell off the washer/dryer on its own, but he isn't sure if it works. What do you think? Also I'd have to arrange a way to ship it from MA to TX.

The combo was replaced it is a post 1965 model, it looks like the black 1966 machine I have in my kitchen.

Is that good or bad?

Post# 512984 , Reply# 6   4/22/2011 at 06:38 (4,724 days old) by Tomturbomatic (Beltsville, MD)

What's good about it is that it still has the square CLEAR window and not the round, pebble-textured glass which makes a good baking dish but was sh*t for visibility. Who needs privacy glass on a laundry appliance? The bad thing is that parts are mostly non-existant.

You would want to have something in which to spin the clothes before letting them go through the dry cycle. The combo's alternative to a "wash only" button was a button labeled "Drip Dry" and they were very literal in the labeling; you can squeeze water out of things after the "gentle low speed spins." That's GE's terminology. If you hang things out to dry, you can watch the water drip out of them for a long time and they will dry with an unusual stiffness.

You also want to have a well, or other source of cheap, steadily cold water. The machine will use about 30 gallons of cold water during the dry cycle, maybe closer to 20 if you spin the load in a regular washer before drying. If your ground water warms up during the warmer months, the condensing efficiency drops way off.

I love drying towels in my GE combo, after they've been through a proper spin of course. All Tom says is true but the drama of that Piece-by-piece washing action in the six-vane drum is just mesmerizing to watch.

A friend of mine lives in the town next to Framingham. I will try to perform a reconnaisance mission on that machine tomorrow and report back.

Sweet, can't wait to hear the follow-up! Eesh, 30 gallons of water?! I live in Houston, there's no such thing as cold tap water.....maybe I best keep my eyes out for a westinghouse slant front.

If you have the room, by all means buy the machine of your dreams. That's one of the tenets of faith here, but do not expect for any one vintage machine to be your daily driver. That is another principle of using vintage machines; you have to spread the love and the use around. It's like people with vintage cars; most don't use them everyday and take them to parking lots where they will be dinged and damaged.

Good point Tom....the GE combo seemed interesting only because it's a rare bird, like the Bendix Duomatic, but my heart is set on a Westinghouse, so I'll just keep looking!

Trevor, the GE combo is a rare machine, but it was built in such a way that it never could perform like a Duomatic; none of them could because of the patent rights AVCO, owner of the patents, tied up.

Trevor, there used to be a huge apartment commplex (I believe it was called Woodway Squre) that was near 2nd Baptist Church.  It had been built in the 1960s and for the time was quite upscale.  Many, if not all of the units had GE Combos in them.  There was a huge fire there around the time you were born.  My first thought when I sww the magnitude of the fire was not all those who had lost everything, but all those combos going up in flames.

Ge Combo

I am pretty sure where this machine is located is in a section of Framingham where all the houses were built with these kitchens and I think I read that here a few years ago.

Saw the GE combo today

This afternoon my friiend Phil and I (aka The Philster)from work jumped in the 1999 Ford van which has logged many miles chasing down vintage washers and dryers and console tvs(took the bendix home from Southborough in that)and headed down to Framingham to see the GE combo. When we got there they had already gutted the kitchen but the machine was still connected.I must say its in really nice shape, the tub is nice, bearings good door gasket good.I fired it off and at first it just hummed but then it roared to life and tumbled. The motor sounded good,i did hear some rumbly pulleys in back.I tried spin but the speed stayed the same which is what I found the last time I saw one of these 25 years ago.If I remember this machine has this foolish belt tensioner thing that stops working.Just the same it is a very interesting and fun machine in great condition and if you were looking for one I would grab this one,The impression I got from the seller is they would take 50 bucks if someone took it away because its going in the garage with the dishwasher and refridgerator Monday.Just as I suspected the machine is in a neighborhood of single level 50s homes all the same.I think this would be a great addition to anybodys collection and I would be glad to be of any assistance to someone who wanted it.

Bendixmark,
If no one else here wants it, i'll be willing to save it. The only thing is I'd need someone to get it and store it until I can send a shipping crate.

Friends of my folks lived in one of these houses on Copeland Circle in Framingham. By chance, is this where this combo is located?

Hey Supreme whirlpool,I could go get it and store it but the sellers may let you store it in their garage as the house is under renovation. They seemed very nice but let me know it would be a crime if that machine got scrapped its too nice, has the neat dispensers and everything

I'm still interested since it's in great shape, might be something fun to have parked next to my daily driver, since I don't use my dryer. What would it entail getting it shipped down to Houston? This would be my first vintage machine....I also assume all yall would be a wealth of information if I was able to get it ;-)

Bendixmark,
Thanks soooo much, but if takacedon REALLY wants it, i'm no longer interested.

I always recommend Microship they will wrap it up and bring it to you and they are very reasonable pricewise or I could go get it and store it for someone to get it from me whoever wants it.The machine is in repairable condition it just doesnt spin somebody here must know how to remedy this. These machines are very rare and more so to find one that isnt wrecked also from being in a damp basement or garage for years.I would call the people right away as they said if they didnt get any offers they were going to junk the stuff. To answer the other question the machine is located off Edgell rd. on frost st. near tr. 9.Microships number is 630 833 7770.

or, maybe, the world's only plumber that works on a Sunday that's a holiday. Nice guy. When I got to Framingham, having driven for 3 hours, I was unable to get in touch with Mike, the guy who owns the house, who said his wife would be there to meet me. I was late, and thank god this guy was friendly enough to call Rachel, who came to meet me. Nice young couple buying and renovating their first home. Somebody had the smarts to keep the old appliances rather than tossing them in the dumpster. The Combo looks really good:

Looks pretty good, the inside liner doesn't appear to be cracked anywhere in the fridge section or the freezer. One of the doors needs a new gasket and a couple of the lexan parts are cracked, but most things that should be there are there. I'm considering this. Unfortunately, I didn't have space in the truck or I might have sprung for this:

I was considering the oven, but, being the picky bastard I am, I wanted at least a window in the door or a rotisserie in the oven. This had neither, so I passed even though I could have gotten it for a song:

OK, so back to the pull-out. I was hoping, realistically, for a 1959 "Princess" with the original silverware basket, a rinse-glo dispenser, a Power Shower (although I think that came later on in 1961) and the original magnetic detergent dispenser.

OK, so what I got is a coveted pink pull-out GE dishwasher from 1960, an SU-60T (really, a BOL) with the original wire silverware basket that I've always wanted to have. This is probably a parts machine. Very happily loaded into the truck with the turquoise cooktop and drove back to Connecticut, where:

I will either disconnect and remove the snapped Calrod heating ring, or maybe I'll bet lucky and find another. The tub is in OK condition, but there are a couple of spots that look like they've been patched with pink Bond-o. The Lexan control dial was broken some time ago and it looks like some helpful son or daughter crazy glued it back together. Was hoping for the old Lexan dial with the red "DRY" and blue "WASH" portions, but that is in my future, apparently. What I did get was the original installation instructions that were still taped (with 50+ year old masking tape) to the top of the installation cabinet.

Since there is 50+ years of dust on those instructions, I'm going to have to clean them off very carefully and then I will scan and post them here. I'm very happy about this haul, I just hope I can get this machine up and running. Interesting thing about this model that surprised me: the drain hose is connected directly to the pump. There is no spring-load valve on the back of the tub as I'm used to with these machines. There is also no Power Shower, so that spring-valve isn't there either. The motor and pump look good, so keep yer fingers crossed.

If any of you want the other appliances I'd get a move on. Rachel was very nice and easy to deal with, but she was clearly anxious to get rid of everything because she's anxious to get her house completed and feels that she needs all the space in the garage for the work that's going on. And that 2nd dumpster is just 5 feet away.
