Hey All!

I've purchased a 1955 Westinghouse set and had shippers all arranged to pick them up Friday and deliver them on Monday. Well long story short Southeastern Freight cursed out the storage company who was holding the machines, demanded cash upon pickup (even though they'd already been paid) and then finally refused to ship
the machines all together. So now I have 2 machines, that I have NO idea how to get to my place. Does anyone happy to be in the Mobile area or hell even in the Houston area, where I am, and able to help?

Not to sound insensitive, but the whole state is kinda dealing with massive tornado trauma.  If an area wasn't ripped apart, their infrastructure and everything else is being pulled together to get to those in need.  My suggestion is try to be patient and let things settle down around there. I know of someone who had made arrangements for Creighters  and Freighters to pick up a pink Frigidaire Filtrator dryer in New Orleans.  Hurricane Katrina arrived before  the dryer could be fetched.  Oh well.

So you paid these shippers, but they demanded more money?

It sounds like you need to go to Uship and find another shipper. If you paid someone already, you need a refund.

Well the company did give me a refund after I gave them the what for, and the area that the machines are in were not affected by the tornados - this reaction was totally unrelated. The machines are in Daphne, and my contacts over there said they were just a-ok. They were flabbergasted by the way Southeastern Freight acted, as they have dealt with them in the past.

Maybe I should try Uship again, I tried them once, to no avail.

Microship

Microship actually said no to doing the shipment for me as they felt the logistics wouldn't work. What's going on with that Bendix?

Mobile to Houston is 468 Miles and it is all interstate I-10. That is an 8 hour drive @ 60mph. Maybe renting a U haul truck and a road trip would be cheaper?

U-Ship

Thing to remember about "U-Ship" is that one is simply listing an item for various persons to bid on transport, sort of like an eBay for shippping. Those doing the bidding can range from professional shippers/truckers with spare room to anyone with a car, SUV or other means of shifting things.

Offers one will receive will largely depend upon where the item is located and where it's going. With petrol prices rather high, and going up many of the casual U-shippers maybe dropping out. I mean it's one thing to stray slightly out of one's way to pick up something, load it on a truck that is going to or at least in the general area of the shippment. However it is quite another matter to make the run on purpose directly.

3BW may have the right idea, provided you have access to a truck or something that can hold the items.

Renting a truck

I've actually priced out the cost of renting a truck, plus gas, plus possibly staying a night somewhere since I'd have to bring someone to help me and it's a wash. The cost for the truck rental alone is $250.

I have made similar trips myself by myself. Each time, I say it's my last...

If you're unwilling to drive it, try u ship again. You might get lucky, but I would expect that to cost $350-450 to deal with.

Thing About U-Ship

launderess's profile picture
Is despite how much detail one lists, it is rare you are going to get C&F type service on the cheap. What you consider blanket, pallet, and or crate service may vary from the shipper. As there is a chance to leave feedback after the transaction is complete you can tell the world if things went not according to plan. However again I still say even with that you aren't going to get the TOL shipping service that many movers of heavy and or valuable items cheaply.

Finally when using U-Ship you want to inquire about any insurace carried. If the person doing the move has nothing more than standard automotive insurance and something happens to your items, as a commercial transaction you may be out of luck.
