OHMIGOD!!! It is after 2am and I need sleep bad!

Here is the first major round of pics so that you can see what we got. There will be more detailed pics later. Pics 28 thru 44 are what we did over this weekend. The pics immediately before show what we found during the first visit earlier this summer.

I'll tell the stories, answer any questions, post the detail pics and post requested pics (if I have them) over the next few days. I'm too beat, stiff, bruised, dirty and tired to continue tonight.

Meanwhile, the answers to the questions are:

How many Unimatics can fit on a truck? You need all the fingers on one hand!

Was Jesup the baby capital of Georgia? Must have been, because there are so many Frigidaire "diaper washers" to be had! (Only a soak cycle and regular cycle, with only hot or warm wash temps. Maybe that ad will appear as a POD soon?)

Is Sears really that far away? Must have been, because there was only 1 Kenmore, and it was Krushed before we got there.

"General Electric light bulbs never dim", but what about their washers? GE's are dim in this area, because there was not a one!

If you stretched all the clothes line rope in Jesup, GA from end to end, how many times would it circle the Earth? Many times, because we didn't find a single dryer at all! Not a one!

Would Samantha have ever used these machines? Only a pink 1961 "clamshell" Custom Imperial would have made it to the Stevens' household.

WOW!!!! WHAT A HAUL GUYS...DEFINITELY THE ABSOLUTE BEST FIND OF THE YEAR!!! Much congratulations to each and every one of you!

I'm still getting over the shock of the numerous WO-65-2's and that ya'll found a Wizard, Pulsamatic (the first year of it too), and a Philco! But the absolute best machine, IMHO, has to be that early front-control Unimatic...is it a 1947, 1948 or 1949 model? And from the time I joined this club I've wondered what a 1963 Frigidaire looked like...now I know! Does it have the 12 lb. 3-ring?

I re-linked the pictures here.

The haul of the CENTURY.

ENJOY!

...and for your next post I'm sure we will be hearing if Simple Grean is better that Lysol liquid is better than Mr. Clean is better than sudsy ammonia....etc.

You boys have just a little work ahead of you, I'm guessing!

I'm vibing a major set of wash-ins and maybe a convention in a couple of years, eh?

I know just how you feel, Robert, John and I loaded 24 machines from the farm. But its a good exhaustion.

It must feel like Christmas morning down there. WOnderful haul, I love the pink clamshell Frigidaire.

Harry was a closet collector under the guise of a washer dealer!! He may be one of the earliest Automatic collectors!

I have to ask does the 194* Frigidaire have the white bowl tub and harmonizer still??? You taped that lid down quick!

Wow...and I thought I had a good Sunday afternoon in Dunwoody finding an old Singer canister vacuum (at the curb...deserved to be..right back to the curb for me) and a fairly new Royal upright (metal body...seemingly in pretty good shape)!

Congrats, those look interesting. WHat's the story behind "the warehouse in Jesup?"

They are in remarkably good condition------------

Once the layers of dirt and critter dung are removed, I think most of these machines will be up and running without too much work! The "Diaper" washers (BOL's) especially the 1960 Frigidaires all had complete 3-ring agitators and the tubs had not a speck of rust. Underneath----just get rid of the black widow spiders and their nests and webs and the mechanisms are remarkably clean. All but one of the Unimatics were VERY clean underneath. It was also kind of cool to see the many assorted manufacturers tags still attached as well as all the original hoses! The tubs of most of the machines were without a speck of rust! It was not unusual to find the agitators had been changed out on many of the Frigidaires. One of the WO-565-2's has a 3-Ring in it, and the '55 a Jetcone. Hey, whatever works!
The '55 "Pulsamatic" is just remarkably nice underneath and should clean up like new! The water temp knob was found inside the tub. The whole agitator (and tub) is like new! Beautiful machine!

The top panel of the poor Wizard is shot-------rusted completely through most of it. But the rest of it is in great condition. The tub and agitator of the Norge are in great condition should clean up beautifully, but it needs its pump back! Peter says he may make it a "gravity drain". The Philco is likewise in great condition inside except (you guessed it) for the rubber parts of the agitator.

I think it is just fantastic that we have found so many surviving "salt of the earth" type Automatic washers that are (with the exception of the need of a MAJOR cosmetic detailing)in great condition. Especially concidering the age of most of them!

AND----the Whirly "Time Line" Imperial! We tried to get a look inside her. I pushed too hard on the plastic rectangular button and it fell through the opening (we rescued it)I did not realize it was not mechanically, but electrically operated. We are guessing it is beautiful inside. "Surgilator" with a chrome cap? I don't remember ever seeing a Whirly "Time Line" before. She will look beautiful, once she is detailed.

Two of the matching Maytag Highlanders (with the "solid" bakelite agitators)(BOL's) had been abused. It appeared as though someone had stood on one of the consoles, and the whole console just broke off and bent backwards bending the top of the back panel with it. Will take some work but maybe both machines will make one good one. The poor '57 "Control Tower" has had her tower smashed. We found the pointer, but the timer is missing and the glass face smashed in. The interior of it is beautiful and intact!

I found a couple of Frigidaire Refrigerators I just HAD to have. One (the "Monolith") is from the 1920's and should clean up beautifully. The other (the "Megalith")is (I think) from the early 1950's and is HUGE. It will need a MAJOR clean up and restoration. They are both HEAVY BEYOND BELIEF!!!!! Peter and I were so proud of our selves for getting it down from my truck without a scratch! We were so tired by the time we got to it (Last thing to move for the day) we didn't care if we pushed it off the back!

What a wonderful adventure. What a thrill to find so many old survivors. How unusual to find so many all in one place! We are grateful to the Burns family for making these machines available to us and to Steve Bisso for bringing us into the fold and sharing them with us. We are sorry Rhinnie has been expierencing additional health problems, and pray for his comfort and relief from them.

Watch it, Greg! I'm in no mood this morning, and will not hesitate to send a slap that will knock you into next week!

;)

Jon: That 194* Frigidaire I think is more like a '50 or '51. I think I saw "WL" on the model/serial plate. No washbowl, it has the solid, solid tub. For some reason, I don't have any real pics of that one, so I will have to get down to Steve R's house again for a photoshoot.

Peteski: The Wizard came with us. It was just too rare to leave behind. The top is completely unsalvageable, it's eaten away with rust so bad.

LEFT BEHINDS: An early Skinny Mini, a BOL or near BOL Westinghouse FL with big square door hinged on the side that was a heap of rust, a Norge wringer, a Custom Deluxe Frigidaire DW that was a heap of rust, a KitchenAid KDS-14 that was in horrible shape, about 7 1-18's and a Deluxe '64 Rollermatic that were outside in the yard that we just didn't have time to mess with. Oh, and TONS of old, very cool refrigerators and stoves.

Steve Toggle: There was sooooooo much unidentified dirt that we think we have "dung lung". With that kind of dirt on the control panels, we have to be careful that it doesn't remove paint or chrome when cleaned off.

Austin Westy: They are all jewels! Under the lids and under the skirts, they are all amazingly clean and rust-free. The '61 pink WCI and the 2 Westies are probably in the worst shape mechanically. The Wizard is the worst cosmetically.

Thanks for the great pictures Peter, what a wonderful haul you guys!!!! Even a 1949 WL-60 Frigidaire, amazing. The machines look dirty but they look like they are in pretty good shape and should clean up well. You should be able to get a 99% of them up and running easily. The WDU-57 Deluxe Unimatic is the first seen in any collection as well as the '54 Timeline. The Wizard and Philco are just too cool too! Can't wait to see the first action shots.

Congratulations again you guys, I know how fun it is to be covered in washer saving dirt!

I can't believe all the wonderful machines you boys found. I've never seen a Whirlpool timeline before. The Norge looks like a 55. Can't wait to see interior pics.

Steve, once you get the ones you brought home settled in your workplace I'd love to come see them. I'll help clean them up if you like. Besides, I want to see that 60 Kenmore now that you have worked on him.

Les-----

You are certainly invited to my next little wash-in------maybe by November I can figure out a Saturday to pull it off.

Today I cleaned the two Unimatics I brought home. They really shine. Surprisingly, the WL-60 has almost no rust anywhere---just a little near the drain inside the water container---an easy fix with POR-15. The WO-65-2 has a spot the size of a pencil eraser on one of the little riblets at the bottom of the tub---also an easy fix. Both machines are VERY clean underneath with both mechanisms showing no sign of oil or water leaks.

In spite of my best efforts to ward off any hitchhikers yesterday, as I was peering under the WO-65-2 a Black Widow spider came out, trotting at full speed. A quick squish later and I was re-armed with more bug spray! I think I'll wait a while to make sure everything is dead this time!

I'll need to change the oil and replace the power cords, etc. before I can test them---so I'll keep you posted----if they don't need anything major we can have a Frigidaire wash-in soon!

Congratulations to all of you for your hard work. It must have been something to see all those treasures at once. A lot of cleanup work but so worth it in the end. The nest of Frigidaires alone is a terrific achievement, but to uncover a Norge Timeline AND a Philco Automagic is beyond amazing.

Toggle, Frigidaire was made in Dayton, OH. Its really not that they are rare in the North, its that they are rare period, just like any other washer from the 1950's. The NY metropolitan area used to be BIG Frigidaire country. I can remember plenty of Frigidaire coin-op self-serv laundries when I was a kid there. I can remember some old Frigidaire laundry signs at laundromats in the early 80's in Manhattan where the machines were replaced, but the signs were still there.

Congratulations on the incredible finds!
It would be sort of a simultaneous dream and nightmare scenario for me though. Incredible potential for saving and restoring some classic machines, but a lot of time and labor (not to mention parts) perhaps necessary to do it.
Have fun.
I'm curious what your plans are for the machines. Where will they ultimately be on display? Is there space at your home? Do you plan to sell or "e-bay" any of them?
Best wishes
Ken

We will have to see as time goes on. We each know which ones we want as keepers, and then the rest will be parts donors and fixer-uppers. What is left over will probably end up on eBay. Don't hold your breaths -- 2 of us have more than fulltime jobs, so it will be a while before there is much movement on the restoration of the bunch.

Thanks Robert / Unimatic.

SO ODD. I don't remember more than one Frigidaire product in this area, and that was a Frigidaire 1-18 washer in a summer home in Miller place (Suffolk County) L.I.

I did see Frigidaire brand in Rehoboth Beach, DE and Winston-Salem, NC. so I ASSUMED it was more southern.

Interestingly people's homes where I grew up (in a small area "suburb" outside of Flushing, Queens) came with a lot of WP. When those died lots of Sears KM came in. A spattering of Maytags and GE were around as well.

My earliest recollection of laundromats is mostly F/L wascomats and Philco-Bendix.

Very nice finds! My great aunt had that RCA Whirlpool timeline washer with suds saver, from about 1958. Sadly a very shortlived design, but very longlived washer. It replaced her Westinghouse Laundromat, though she had the Laundromat dryer through the entire run of this washer. Both were still working when she passed in 1993.
